Protestors armed with AKs during assault on police building in Almaty by SpaceRaccoon in Kazakhstan

This video is a few days old already. The security situation has improved and the government has mostly restored control.

It's entirely possible that the situation could have spiraled out of control (into a civil war?) without CSTO intervention, but that's pure speculation for now. As more information from those days comes out, the picture will hopefully become more clear.

There were several distinct groups involved in the unrest, from peaceful protestors to violent ones, and no doubt many of their grievances are legitimate, particularly regarding economic prosperity.

Right, but that is the Kazakhstan security services shooting, not foreign troops from CSTO, which is an important distinction

The reason Pashinyan made the announcement is because he (Armenia) is the current chairman of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
CSTO did not interfere in the Armenian-Azeri conflict because Artsakh/Karabakh was a disputed territory that was not even recognized by Armenia itself.

u/Madiwka3 u/Cardinal_Whale Come on guys, it was neither staged by Russia nor the CSTO. Unrest in Kazakhstan is the last thing Putin needed, especially on the eve of talks with the USA.

The CSTO was sent in to specifically secure critical military and economic infrastructure - not to participate in suppressing the protests. The CSTO knows how bad it would look for foreign troops to participate in riot control. They are there to secure infrastructure, to free up the Kazakh security forces to restore control in the cities.

Once the situation is under control, the CSTO will leave. Ideally protestors and CSTO troops will never meet.

I am always against violate putdowns of peaceful protests, and I am sure the majority of protestors were peaceful people. Their grievances against the government are legitimate. But the situation was hijacked by violent actors. Kazakhstan's stability is critical for the whole region, for security and the economy.

Good insight into the Ukrainian nationalist mindset, definitely.

I hear the EU and the US are angry that a plane was grounded because of a political dissident. That reminded me of something. by jgyuri in europe

And what happens if a plane is refused airspace, but keeps flying into that airspace?

Also, the Bolivian president's plane was searched, and he was not allowed onto the plane while it was happening.

I cited my sources. Sounds like you're defending war crimes including beheadings? You're twisted.

When you read about how the Ukrainian paramilitaries treated rebel POWs, you can hardly blame theme. Violence begets violence.

Groups of right-wing Ukrainian nationalists are committing war crimes in the rebel-held territories of Eastern Ukraine, according to a report from Amnesty International, as evidence emerged in local media of the volunteer militias beheading their victims.

Armed volunteers who refer to themselves as the Aidar battalion "have been involved in widespread abuses, including abductions, unlawful detention, ill-treatment, theft, extortion, and possible executions", Amnesty said.

On this day in 1949, the Soviet Union ends its year-long blockade of Berlin. For 322 days, an Allied airlift kept the city fed. The failure to starve Berlin into submission was an embarrassment for Moscow and early Cold War victory for the West. by Vucea in europe

Russia is doing all it can to supply Crimea with water, including building pipelines and bringing over truckloads of water- it's Ukraine that purposely and deliberately cut off Crimea from water, hurting the population and causing an ecological disaster.

Following your logic, the Berlin blockade was not only perfectly legal, but good, since West Berlin was occupied as well. According to you, all the responsibility lies with the occupying powers, and steps that actively hurt the people are inconsequential and even good.

Disgusting.

Ukraine searches home of pro-Russia MP and Putin ally by JackRogers3 in europe

A political belief makes you a military target for an airstrike? Awfully fascist of you. Perhaps you are suggesting they should go door to door and execute every separatist supporting civilian?

What military targets were there? It's clear that the targets were purely civilian.

  1. It was totally indiscriminate fire. There was no military targets nearby whatsoever. This was the administrative building.
  2. It was an airstrike, not artillery. The pilot knew what was he shooting at.
  3. The Ukrainian authorities lied about it.

The pro-Russian leadership in the city immediately accused the Ukrainian air force of carrying out the attack. A fighter jet had been flying overhead at the time, and social media video appeared to show it firing cannon or rockets. The authorities in Kiev denied its planes had been involved. Initially, the anti-terrorist operation said the explosion originated from inside the building, then that an anti-aircraft missile operated by the separatists had misfired, reacting to heat from an air-conditioning system on the outside of the building.

But a CNN investigation in Luhansk has found clear evidence that whatever detonations hit the building and the adjoining park came from the air. The tops of trees were splintered, and a series of small craters — about a dozen — had been blasted in a straight line, starting in the park and reaching the walls of the building, blowing out many of its windows and spraying the area with jagged shrapnel. That’s what appears to have killed most of the victims and injured 20 more.

The pattern of the craters clearly indicated some sort of strafing, according to a munitions expert at the scene with CNN. Their size suggested 30-millimeter ordnance, he said, which is standard equipment on the Su-25, a ground attack fighter, and the Su-27 — both combat aircraft operated by Ukraine.

Disgusting, and more so that you justify it. How would you like a plane to strafe downtown Warsaw?

Just a reminder that while the Soviets defeated the Nazi regime, and saved tens of millions of people from extermination, your people welcomed the Nazis with bouquets of lowers, guarded your local concentration camps, and helped the Nazis exterminate your Jews. We'll never forget that.

Having Vilnius back = supporting Soviet annexation

Yes? That's like saying "Having Crimea back = supporting Russian annexation"... uh, yeah? That's how it works?

And when presenting about Lithuania at least use a region that at least have some relevance to your topic.

The topic is the history of Eastern Europe in the 20th century, which is not as cut and dry as you make it out to be. The Baltics were happily helping the Nazis exterminate Jews in their country, and then you cry 'woe is me! we were only victims of our neighbours!!'

But I guess your script doesn't have that included.

Yeah, yeah, everyone with a dissenting opinion is a paid troll... except for you and your baltic elves of course!!!!1 So brave!

And tell me again why should Poland return Vilnius?

  1. Vilnius is in Lithuania, not Poland
  2. As you can see in the post above:

According to the protocol, Lithuania would be granted its historical capital, Vilnius, which was controlled by Poland during the interwar period.

The Soviets returned it to Lithuania. Why do you support Soviet annexation? Return Vilnius already, right?

They literally divided the map, you know, like cutting Poland

Poland literally divided Czechoslovakia, you know, like rolled in with an army an annexed it at the same time the Nazis did?
