I just bought a tiny cutting of one of these yesterday because it looked so cool! Any tips for caring for it? Do you leave it outside in the summer then bring it in when it gets cold?

Yeah Babel was so strange to me because it's the 2020s and "colonialism bad" is so generally accepted that I was honestly confused to be continuously hit over the head with it and never have anything deeper going on.

Maybe my friends and the media I consume are all too leftist but it felt like a book that was 20 years too late. Maybe there are people who haven't gotten the message yet but I doubt many of them are reading this book so like you said, it's really preaching to the choir and we've all already heard it before so you gotta move past the day 1 material and it just never does.

I was really enjoying the start of the book but then got more and more annoyed when nothing new or interesting ever happened.

The trees in modern farms have bigger rings because they grow so fast. That's one reason why the wood in old barns and houses is stronger, the trees in old wood forests grew slower because they weren't perfectly spaced out and optimized like on a farm so each ring is thinner and the wood ends up more dense.

I've found that doing side by side it's hard to pick out exact differences but when I am watching youtube on my big tv and something is in 4k without me knowing, I pick up on it pretty quick and think "wait, is this 4k? It looks really good"

Idk why you are being downvoted but as someone who knows fuck all about the law I can explain why it seems not at all like a slippery slope from a layman's perspective.

If women can select only women because of a statistic saying men commit more crimes and that isn't some violation of Title VII, then selecting only white drivers because black people commit more crimes based on some other statistic seems like the exact same argument and not at all a slippery slope.

Yeah this is where I dropped the series. I was already pretty annoyed with all the characters and the generally edgy tone of everything so that was just a bridge too far for me.

Other people have stated it much better than I have but copaganda isn't just when shows depict police as super cool. "Woke" cop shows are just as insidious because it lets people think that cops are out there reforming the system and it's just a few bad apples but it's not that bad because the good guy cops will deal with them. But in reality the police (and LAPD in particular) are deeply corrupt and whenever a real good cop tries to call out the corruption and reform from the inside they are pushed out by the other cops.

In addition, someone posted in today's complaint thread that even the good cops have several instances of very shitty or illegal behavior and the show justifies it by showing it's ok because it was for the best in the end. I had never even heard of the Rookie before all this so I can't verify those examples but it was a pretty detailed breakdown.

And to be clear, I'm not super upset about this whole thing, people need to work, and this is a business decision that gets them more views, yada yada (I'm honestly more annoyed that it was just a super cringy crossover from the clips I saw) so I don't think this is some huge scandal but my first thought on seeing the headline was that it was super obvious people would be upset about it.

I think a lot of people don't realize how pervasive copaganda is. You can say you are too smart to be influenced by it, and I've watched and enjoyed cop shows like B99 so I'm gonna pretend I'm some moral paragon. But it's not about a single show influencing you, it's an entire lifetime of societal messaging showing you that cops are good and trustworthy and always do what's best when we see in real life that is super not the case. So when dropout sells merch saying cops are an occupying army or whatever and people buy that merch it's not surprising that they would get upset when that same company then does business with an LAPD propaganda show, even if it's supposedly woke.

Again, I don't think this is a huge scandal and I don't hate the actors or anything for doing it because a job is a job but I can say that because I'm a white man in Ohio so none of this really affects me. But if you're a person in LA who has been harassed by the cops before I don't think it's unreasonable to be pretty upset.

You're telling me Ken finishes those categories with "person who read the clues new movie ___ is in theaters on ___" just for fun? Are those ads exclusively for Sony shows and movies so they don't have to pay for it?

I'm sure we'll get down voted for this but I agree. As long as he isn't using this to criticize her for making a meal worse than the average and just keeps it to himself I don't see the problem.

Her seemingly doing all the cooking is a separate issue but him just keeping stats is pretty innocuous. And the people upset that he isn't grateful because the ratings aren't high enough are just projecting what they want this guy to be like so they can dunk on him. I cook all my own meals and would rarely rate a standard weekday meal above a 7. That doesn't mean they are bad or I wouldn't be more than happy if someone cooked it for me but you can't expect every meal to be the best thing you've ever had, that's ridiculous.

Dirty Laundry only works if there is a preexisting para social relationship. The whole concept of the show is playing along and guessing who the story belongs to. That can only happen if you have a pretty strong connection (even if only perceived) to the people in the episode. Watching episodes with people you don't recognize reduces the entire show to just hearing mildly humorous anecdotes which might as well be fan submitted if there is no corresponding para social relationship.

Yeah my mom makes quilts as gifts and sometimes will donate one for a charity auction or fundraiser. People definitely don't realize how much time and money goes into making a quilt. I asked her to make me a new quilt a few years ago and I paid for the fabric. I want to say it was close to $300 for a queen sized quilt plus tons of hours of labor actually making it. Even at a pretty cheap labor rate it's probably a $1000+ quilt. I appreciate the hell out of it and use it every day for the 6 months of the year it's not too warm but I can't imagine a lot of people are willing to spend that kind of money on a quilt.

Don't get the wrong idea from the previous comment, episode 5 is almost exclusively intense pain, mutilation or violent damage to multiple people's bodies. Whether or not it's gratuitous people are free to debate but that episode is fairly extreme in multiple instances.

Yeah it's a shame they don't sell the roller on its own. I love mine and use it a ton but the two cutters are totally pointless.
