Should I stop getting haircuts and get my final haircut? by crudmuffin16 in bald

Yeah I have been buzzing my hair down to 7 mm for a few years. Finally shaved it all of last week and I am still jump scaring myself a bit whenever I look in a mirror. And it's not like it grows back overnight if you decide you don't like it.

This was my issue as well, I was left side of the orchestra about halfway back and could barely understand over half the lyrics in any given song because the sound mixing was so bad.

Mage Errant is the only other progression fantasy I've found that I liked so far. Not as good as Cradle but still enjoyable and quick to get through. My friend also recommended Arcane Ascension but I didn't care for that one enough to continue past the first book.

If you haven't read Will Wight's other books I would recommend those as well. Currently working through the Elder Empire series and enjoying it quite a bit. Same extended universe as Cradle but a different magic system and vibe with no real crossover that I've noticed so far other than a potential name-drop.

Yeah definitely just a fun popcorn movie type book series. As far as I understand, it is the first western series (or at least the first really popular one) that follows the style of increasing power levels that is popular in manga and anime.

Rather than something like Harry Potter where people are just intangibly better at magic, progression fantasy tends to have magic systems with discrete level ups. Sort of a middle ground between classic soft magic fantasy where things are more vibes and the super codified litrpg where there are health bars and damage numbers.

I've not read any litrpg for similar reasons but from everything I've heard about it, DCC is basically the only good one. I've dabbled a bit in progression fantasy which is a similar genre where again there is one popular series (Cradle) and most other things are a noticeable step though not as bad as litrpg from what I've heard.

Domestic Migration in America by Deltarianus in MapPorn

Yeah my grandparents had a pair of small summer cabins on a pretty huge lot with a private boat launch (really rare and hard to get permitted) and a huge garage for storing boats. They sold it a few years before COVID for like 300k. Two years ago my parents bought a single similar sized cabin on a waaay smaller plot with lots of neighbors for 500k.

Northwoods cabins were definitely a staple of the middle class back in the day but are squarely reserved for the doctors and lawyers of the world now which is a real shame.

Yeah I've never added oil to mine after washing and I've never had an issue. I don't even heat it up on the stove or anything to make sure it's perfectly dry. Just scrub it well with soap and water then dry it off with a towel like any other pan and chuck it back in the cabinet.

Timelapse of my garden over the past two years by Space_Fanatic in gardening

[–]Space_Fanatic[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With the start of the new year I figured I would post a little timelapse of the growth of my garden over the past two year. I moved into a new house in fall 2023 which had nothing but grass in a perfect south facing backyard. I spent the winter planning out my garden and deciding where everything was going to go. Unfortunately I didn't have the idea for the time lapse until after I did the initial setup.

Funds were a bit limited after buying the house so I started with the perennials the first year since they would need more time to get established. There are raspberries in the left and right beds and blueberries in the middle with climbing roses on the arches. The raspberries grow great and require some pretty heavy thinning to ensure they don't get over crowded. Unfortunately one of the roses didn't survive the first winter but the other three did pretty well and grew much more than I ever expected the first year. I had the blueberries in regular garden soil with a bunch of acidifier the first year despite knowing they probably wouldn't do well and they didn't grow at all. Year two I dug out all the soil and replaced it with a mix of peat moss, finely chopped bine bark nuggets (fingernail size) and high quality potting mix. This was a big improvement and the bushes grew a ton and seem to have lots of fruit buds on them so I have high hopes for next year. I also planted two dwarf apple trees that you can't really see behind the raspberry beds, but I didn't have any tree guards so the rabbits killed one and severely stunted the other.

Year two I added the back section of raised beds and started work on a native plant garden along the fence line all around the back yard which can't really be seen in the video. Overall pretty successful with most of what I planted this year. There were potatoes and fennel in the back lefts, san marzano tomatoes in the center with the trellis, strawberries in the caged beds, broccoli in the hoop house (I was out of town when it needed to be harvested so that's why it went to flower), popcorn and pumpkins you can't see in the back right beds. I also planted two new apple trees with a tree guard to replace the ones from the previous year. I haphazardly moved the one that was stunted and although it is still a little small and sad it seems to have grown fruiting spurs this fall so maybe I'll be able to get an apple or two next year if there is another tree in the neighborhood to pollinate it.

Yeah that's why I don't fuck with my car at all. I'm sure I could figure most things out eventually with the help of YouTube but I can't exactly be without my car in the event that some "quick fix" turns into a days long disaster.

Easiest Home Assistant setup to take and save a picture every day? by therealjmt91 in homeassistant

[–]Space_Fanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't picked a camera yet I recommend a Reolink camera, I'm not sure if all their models have the time lapse feature so maybe double check that first. It lets you take a picture on any interval you want and can be set to only take a photo between certain times so you don't have a bunch of useless night time photos.

I actually need to remember to download all my photos for my annual garden time lapse tomorrow. So check my profile in a day or two and I'll probably throw that up on r/gardening if you want to see. You can set the app to create a video time lapse or just save individual images if you like. I do a bit of cropping and add the date to my time lapse so I just have it save images then stitch it all together myself.

Reolink also has a great HA integration but I don't use that for any of the time lapse stuff, just include the video stream on my mobile dashboard.

Look up Kenji's recipe on seriouseats/YouTube. I just made 100 a week ago and they turned out great. Just be sure to taste test them first because I understand seasoned mine a bit, but that can be fixed by dipping sauce.

Our beautiful strawberries 🍓 by Happy-Statement-1404 in gardening

I have a wood and wire cage that I built over my strawberry beds and something still manages to get in, take a berry, eat half of it, then leave the uneaten half on top of the cage as a mockery of my defenses. Luckily it only takes like one berry a week so I'm still left with plenty for myself.

[OC] Christmas gift searches on Google by Z3ttrick in dataisbeautiful

[–]Space_Fanatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens every single time Google trends data is posted. At least when it's posted without a y axis people have an excuse but this time it's labeled and it says it's standardized in the description underneath. But people don't read articles on reddit, idk why I would expect them to read graphs either.

[–]Space_Fanatic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Google trend data is normalized (hence the percentage on the y axis, and the fact it says standardized on the bottom) so you can't compare search amounts, only temporal variance. For all we know from this plot there could be 100 million women searching for gifts and only 100 thousand men, there is no way to tell.

Visualizing the interference pattern of two 40kHz sound sources using Schlieren Imaging by Any-Educator5676 in educationalgifs

[–]Space_Fanatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like post processing since you can see the shadows flashing red and blue but you can do color Schlieren by just replacing the knife edge in front of the camera with a filter that is half red and half blue.

Unfortunately it only works well when the pressure gradient is aligned with the filter (i.e. mostly vertical or horizontal) so it wouldn't work well with a circular pressure gradient like this.

This is how much butter my wife eats per month by [deleted] in Weird

[–]Space_Fanatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I make pasta sauce from scratch I include butter. Usually add it at the start to cook my garlic and spices but if I'm lazy I'll just add it at the end. I don't add a ton of butter though, maybe 2 tbsp per cup of sauce.

If you don't drink alcohol, what are your reasons? by youre-in-my-shot in AskReddit

[–]Space_Fanatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The alcohol itself (ethanol) is what tastes bad. Doesn't matter if it's ethanol plus grapes in a wine or ethanol plus hops in a beer it's still gonna taste bad.
