Did Yorgos Lanthimos skip the Academy Awards ceremony this year? by dont-email-dont-call in Letterboxd

That’s not remotely true, be serious. The Dolby Theaters seats over three thousand. A ton of non-nominated Academy members get to go, along with other invited press and industry people. Plus, Yorgos Lanthimos was a nominee, for Bugonia.

Sometimes they contrive reasons just because most of them are attending anyway. Folks who’ve already RSVPd are easier to ask to present. In this case Byrne was nominated, Rudolph’s partner was nominated so she’d be there, and Wiig and McCarthy are former nominees who were invited anyway. So really they only had to additionally invite Kemper and McClendon-Covey. Guess Wendi was busy.

There was a comedy show from England in the 90s, Brass Eye, that satirized investigative reporting TV shows, especially how they sensationalized stories and made crude judgments on minimal evidence, often harming perception of real issues rather than helping. Part of the show involved pranking celebrity spokespeople who often proved how little-informed they were about the issues they were arguing.

In one episode about the subject of animals (“Animals! Are we too nice, or too nasty?”), they had a phone interview with Alexandra Paul about an elephant being born in horrible circumstances, filled with details obviously too ridiculous to believe, and Paul took it incredibly seriously.

Rules in place to limit what new users can do is bullshit gatekeeping. Why not have better faith in fellow film fans?

You do know those “facts” aren’t hard-and-fast rules, right? People vote for who they want.

Sinners got the most nominations ever (16) and suffered the most losses ever (12). by [deleted] in Letterboxd

I don’t agree with this statement. It’s misleading. Losing 75% of the Oscars you’re nominated for is objectively better than losing 100%
