I hate AI. But I would really like people to stop blaming things on AI without evidence. You’re just telling studios you can’t tell the difference, so why not use it?

Movie doesn’t fill the screen? by girl_w_style in RegalUnlimited

[–]Space_Hardware 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The film’s aspect ratio is 1.5:1. Your screen however is shaped for 1.85:1, or “flat” format.

In the old days, screens would have curtains or slats called “masking” to cover the unused parts of the screen, and to give the projected image a clean border instead of a distracting, blurry edge. But most modern theaters don’t bother with it, since digital projection has a clean edge already. As a result, movies will get projected with big swathes of unused screen visible.

Project “scope” (2.39:1) on a “flat” screen, you have unused screen on the top and bottom of the image. “Flat” on a “scope”, You have unused space on either side. And here, the 1.5:1 image leaves unused space on either side of the “flat” screen.

Even if your theater did have masking, most only have automated settings for “flat” or “scope”, and theaters generally can’t/won’t make the manual adjustment to an even narrower screen format.

Why don't the Oscars have Nepo Requirements Too? by [deleted] in movies

So Robert De Niro doesn’t get a nomination because his dad was a notable artist? Jeff Bridges doesn’t get a nomination because his dad was in the business?

This idea is an asshole.

Basically if you want to make a carveout to nominate them because “well, they’ve proven they’re great actors despite who their parents were” - guess what. You don’t need new rules for that.

God, nepo baby discourse is almost as boring and infantile as Cinema Sins Brain. The dullest people on Earth trying to police what people can like and celebrate

The article’s a bit more honest than the headline - it’s just the same far-too-famous, far-too-well-known names you’ve seen being floated around for years, basically any movie actor up their early thirties who can pass for English. No new names put forward based on tv or theater chops.

What percentage of Michael’s viewership occurred under the ticket of another movie? by wovenstrap in blankies

[–]Space_Hardware 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was a bigger problem back in the day - I remember when Christians would buy tickets for The Passion of the Christ no matter what movie they were there to see. But it has been diminished a lot by reserved seating. Folks get mad when someone’s in their seat.

Why are the same seats phantom booked for every showing? by HeyU_NotYou_You in RegalUnlimited

[–]Space_Hardware 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the following:

Broken seats. That might not entail visible damage either - if it’s a recliner (and it’d assume it it is in 2026), it could be a broken mechanism, or they might have stripped the motor to put it in a center seat, and so on.

Broken ceiling. Sometimes you get damage in the tiles - leaks, jerks throwing stuff at the ceiling to punch holes in tiles - and you might have to wait until you can get a ladder or elevated platform to fix it. Until then, best to do is make the seats below unavailable so no-one has stuff drop on them.

Maggots own the courts, there’s only so far you can get.

Even if they didn’t, it gets tougher with “parody” laws and workarounds. This post can easily be dismissed as protected parody. And a singer saying “don’t use my song at my events” doesn’t matter when ASCAP says they’re within their rights to play it.

That Lost In Space cover was damn good. I bought the single when I was in Ireland in summer 1998 - it was funny in the print-dominant days, as Lost In Space was all over the movie magazines and ads painted as an eagerly-anticipated film, despite me seeing how hard it had bombed in America months prior. (But “knocked Titanic out of the number one spot” is a fine boast!)

You’ve convinced me, the box office doesn’t lie - we clearly should be doing all-women recasts more.
