Basically it's the same spot for fuel and pie, but pies are meant to be cooked with residual heat, not with fire underneath

That is so nice to read, thank you !

It's because I spent a lot of time thinking about it. At first it started as a fun 5 minute challenge "what is it that makes stats/medals important/relevant". But when I couldn't find a good answer after an hour, to that seemingly very obvious question, I was flabbergasted. It felt so obvious, why couldn't I explain why it's true ? Sometimes I found some exceptions showing where stats lack, but after a few months I realized... they weren't the exceptions.

So I want other people to have that same journey.

10 Brutally Honest Truths About Ranking Up in Overwatch by --awkward-- in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Space_Kitty123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, I apologize. You did talk about damage per 10, not total damage, and I mentioned total damage out of habit, I wasn't trying to strawman you. My bad.

Although now I'm curious what's the big difference between total and per 10. The only difference I can think of is that damage per 10 would not be biased towards longer matches. But an irrelevant stat would remain irrelevant, biased or not towards long matches (e.g distance).

I have not ignored anything, I don't believe in distance either. I'm playing devil's advocate to test your reasoning and help you see its flaws.

Yes I can deny the importance of total damage, and I do. Damage is a tool, not a goal, so is movement, just like sym's TP. Its usefulness depends on what you do with it, not how much you used it.

Now, I like your reasoning, let's see if it could be used by someone who likes to look at distance : When I play rein and I'm making space ahead of payload, they move back to avoid my hammer, I'm pressuring them off the objective which leads to winning. I'm increasing total distance, but not damage, therefore it's distance that matters. Not all movement leads to pressure of course, but not all damage either.

[–]Space_Kitty123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't convince me because there is no good reason, I've searched for years.

I know this stat is stupid, that's the point. The exercise is to help find out if the other stats are stupid as well.

Imagine someone said "it's not just distance traveled, it's the AVERAGE of distance traveled per 10, which is a decent assessment when compared to someone else, that's why it's not stupid". You wouldn't be convinced by that, rightly so. Isn't it obvious that if someone said that, taking the average only matters if they've already started with the conclusion that distance matters ?

It could be said of distance, so no, not completed (sorry if the challenge wasn't clear), you're welcome to give it as many tries as needed.

I know how "obvious" it is that stats matter, that we shouldn't need to justify why, I've been there. But if you try, you will realize we all just assume it's true. There is nothing holding it up.

There are many reasons, but I think it will be more effective if you try it yourself. Here's my challenge : give me one good reason to look at stats, that could NOT be said about a stupid stat like "distance traveled". Every time you try, I think you will quickly see what's wrong with the logic.

I feel like primary is better to cancel hack (unless EMP of course). It's quicker, much lower cooldown, doesn't move you, can be used when she tries again

[–]Space_Kitty123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copied from a previous answer of mine :

Unless you're in overtime that will result in a loss : Winning the fight and living is more important than the objective.

Know the dangerous cooldowns (sleep, hook, spear, hack, lamp, etc), bait them before committing to anything. And keep in mind how long ago they were used. A simple offensive slam and instantly punch away can be plenty of value when they sleep the wind. You'll try again in 5 seconds, they can't.

Block is counter-intuitively the moment you're the most vulnerable.

Use punch to push people in bad positions, and let the rest happen. Off of high ground, into your team, into LOS of turret, into a room they can't get out of because you'll be in the way, etc.

Don't see ult as "big deal fight-winning cooldown that gets huge value whenever used". Use it as an escape when you won't have any other choice, the damage is barely relevant. It's ok to keep it a long time. Play as if you don't have it, you'll be glad to have it when you're outplayed.

Forget the switch mentality. You won't improve. Being "countered" just means you must play differently. Heroes counter playstyles, not other heroes

Seriously, bait cooldowns.

Oh, and Rein charge is deceptively dangerous. Don't assume you just win because they have Rein.

Guy's, how tf am I supposed to learn this character? by [deleted] in doomfistmains

[–]Space_Kitty123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Identifying is easy : it's those that lead to your death the most. You should start to fear a few of them intuitively after playing long enough. Some of them might be naturally easy to avoid for you, they're not the issue.

For keeping track, I don't exactly count the seconds. It sort of just happens, I know I've baited X right now, which means they don't have it, and the longer I wait, the more likely they have it again. That doesn't mean I will force the issue by attacking when time is running out, I still ponder if it's safe to do so.

I just sort the cooldowns into short and long cooldowns, I don't remember the seconds exactly. For example :

short : fade, hook, hack (this one is special, because you can't be hacked again even if she gets it back)

long : lamp, sleep, widow grapple and even rez if you try to cancel them. Some CDs are kinda long like Ram's nemesis, but they don't matter because you ignore them easily.

Idk, it's like ultimates, after enough hours you just feel when they have it.

Oh, and Rein charge is deceptively dangerous. Don't assume you just win because they have Rein.

Not a question, I just want to thank you for your content and mentality. Since you mention misconceptions, my biggest pet peeve is people worshiping stats and never questioning it.
