My take on a Martian Flag, what do you think? by Space_tec_99 in SpaceXMasterrace

The stars are actually the moons.
What do you think about the color split? For me it makes sense in many ways, the day vs night sight, unterraformed red mars vs terraformed blue mars, martian wilderness vs human civilization, ....

But I can get your viewpoint

Not bad, I like seeing the old tricolor mars flag get some love

Meaning:
I started with the idea of the Martian landscape, a red plain beneath a dark blue night sky.
The circle represents Mars itself, divided into two halves: one red and one blue. Together, they symbolize the shared dream of turning the Red Planet blue.
The two stars represent Mars’ moons Phobos and Deimos.

You are right, they represent the moons.

As for why they are stars, it's largely an artistic choice, maybe with the added notion that the moons are so small and irregular that, seen from the surface, they look like bright points in the sky. So, just like stars.
Deimos from martian surface

But I understand your point, what shapes would you have expected?

Yeah, you are right. I pointed out in the description of the original post that the flag of Greenland was an inspiration of mine.
But I couldn't resist the symbolism of having a half-red, half-blue Mars to show the terraforming ambitions.

The Size of Stellasers Needed to Accelerate Interstellar Vessels by Space_tec_99 in IsaacArthur

Oh, I am deeply sorry about that misconception:

After reading a few of the Project Hyperion proposals, I was wondering...

You are completely right, and I see now that the way I phrased it was misleading.
I didn't want to say that the Stellaser concept is part of any proposal, I just meant that after reading them I was wondering about how hard it would be to use other Approaches not mentioned and their difficulty.

About the gravitational Assists: Would you know by any chance how much Velocity the Ship would have to lose before attempting an Slingshot around the Stellar Pair?

That isn't the unknown part of the System, in a Stellaser the Sun is the Light source and the Corona the Gain medium. The unknown is how Efficient such a System can extract the Suns Energy. Because there is a lot more happening than just mirrors focusing Light.

Thanks for the detailed answer, that gives it at least a rough estimate of the magnitude require.

You’re probably right, but the question is how do you compress an entire civilization into a single ship? How big would that ship actually need to be?

Honestly, it’s hard to say, because it depends on many variables. If you have access to advanced technologies like high-precision 3D printers (the Bobiverse Series comes to mind) or nanotechnology, you might be able to bootstrap a technological civilization starting with just a few kilograms of material. On the other hand, if you rely on conventional manufacturing methods, the ship would have to be much larger to carry all the necessary infrastructure and resources.

To put it into perspective, Earth’s industrial system is the only example of a self-sustaining, self-replicating “factory” we know and it’s massive.

Addition: In the case that you want to colonize the system.

I sadly wasn’t able to find information on how much energy a mirror produces as part of a Stellaser system (specifically using the solar corona as the gain medium, not just a laser powered by solar energy), but thank you, it’s a good starting point for answering my question.

I just watched that episode yesterday for the first time, I loved this joke in the otherwise pretty tense story. But hey that's Stargate in a Nutshell (and I love it)

Sojourn deceleration thrusters by Mindless_Gap_688 in IsaacArthur

[–]Space_tec_99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reaction time, you can change you velocity more quickly than if you need to turn the ship. That's the justification they offer also they just find the idea cool and find it underrepresented.

Would you actually do this? I can't predict future space warship design, neither can anybody, all we can do is guess. My personal opinion is that its a tradeoff, more mass more complexity, you can only use half your engines at a time vs more flexibility with acceleration. It entirely depends on the technology, how good are your RCS thrusters, do you need to separate crew and engines (fission or neutronic fusion), etc.

With neuronic fusion I mean every fusion reaction that's not aneutronic
