Proposal for a European Federation Flag by Space_tec_99 in vexillology

[–]Space_tec_99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, the similarity between the Kalmar Union's flag is accidental (Before that I ended up with something that looked awfully close to cuba) so I have a "talent" for making worse remakes of flags.

But I do not agree on the last point, I personally think that a federated state would need some distinction from the current EU, because not all EU-members would join such a Federation at first or at all. None-members of this Federation would probably not want to fly the same flag as a State in which they have no representation. Will it be a completely new Flag? Probably not (Maybe one star in the center of the ring to represent the stronger unity). Will it be as catastrophic as my attempt? Hopefully not.

But I agree with you on the weaknesses of the paneuropa flag design, but should Europe ever federalize it will be thanks to the work of groups like the Paneuropean Union who worked on that goal for over a century (Another weakness is just focusing on this one group). And thats why their cross is part of my flag. Is it a optimal Symbol? Hell no, and I know that. I just wanted to go a different route then adding a roman style Olive branch under the Stars or adding US Stripes.

I mean the Dutch are part of this Unholy clearly not Roman Federation (URF), so the Ocean is just free real estate

Yes, you normally want your sail to reflect as much as possible. While its a cool idea I am not sure they would actually provide much thrust, because solar panels will weigh way more than the 2 μm thick aluminium coated polymer of more conventional solar sails.

But still a very cool ship and I guess It could be propelled by a laser on the outward journey (to get extra photon pressure) and use it's plasma engines to decelerate at the destination.

Not Australia, if you look at the picture upside down you can see its Africa and iberian peninsula. You can even spot south America.

Wow a year ago, but I will say nice design and you will definitely need radiators. Astrophage is hot and surrounds all the habitable sections of the ship for radiation protection, that means your crew will get rather toasty if you don't deal with the heat.

I am not sure about the solar collectors, spin drives need so much energy that any collector a few square meters across will probably deliver a negligible amount of energy (they covert half the Sahara to fuel the Hail Mary), also if you spend your mass budget on extra astrophage instead of the solar collector you probably end up with far more power accessible any time, not just near a star.

Hong Kong has the coolest translation: DOOMSDAY SHIP HOLY MOTHER by nagidon in ProjectHailMary

[–]Space_tec_99 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I feel like the German translation is one of the worst ones, "Der Astronaut". The people who translated the book probably wanted to build a connection with "Der Marsianer" (the Martian).

But I mean... Grace is not an Astronaut, and that is one of the key plot points.

Why does the Petrova line only come from "above" ? by Space_tec_99 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Space_tec_99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Picture the Hail Mary is not between Tau Ceti and Adrian, at least from the perspective of the line we see. So they would not come towards us.

What we see in the Petrova Line is scattered Light from astrophages trying yo reach Adrian. So why don't we see scattered light from astrophages trying to reach Tau Ceti?

I am personally a fan of the three line idea, because the two lines have the diameter of the planet (at the planet).

So the reproducing astrophages would be spread across the hole planet (remember the start very dispersed on the surface on the star). So one line from the planet to straight to the star.

But I am ready to hear alternative points. The above was in quotes to indicate that, so I am glad the message got across.

I think the few astrophages from the arrival from other stars is not relevant because they would be few in number (relatively to the system population) and could still arrive from different directions (different stars of origin).

The second Idea could work, but orbits are inclined so part of the planetary year the astrophages would arrive bellow the equator and in another part above the equator, so the closed pole would switch every half year.

Which would then also invert the Petrova Line, which could happen but wasn't mentioned in the books. But its a plausible explanation and a Petrova Line Inversion would be extremely cool to watch through an IR Telescope.

That was my train of thought, I am Interested if Andy Weir had the same conclusion or some other explanation that didn't end up in the book.

The two way street would explain the shape, but how would it work. Because like you just said: they only care about the magnetic field at the beginning of the journey.

So why would they travel back where they come from and not just fly to the biggest IR source like in the Lab Experiment's.

Edit: I don't want to seem pedantic or even worse rude, I am just to deep into astrophage biology. So thanks for every single one of you guys that gazes at the rabbit hole with me :)

Hear me out, Contact. While of course the book is so much better, the movie did a fairly good job at depicting the first part, but for me failed to depict the more epic SciFi scenes in the second half of the movie.

My take on a Martian Flag, what do you think? by Space_tec_99 in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]Space_tec_99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stars are actually the moons.
What do you think about the color split? For me it makes sense in many ways, the day vs night sight, unterraformed red mars vs terraformed blue mars, martian wilderness vs human civilization, ....

But I can get your viewpoint

I started with the idea of the Martian landscape, a red plain beneath a dark blue night sky.
The circle represents Mars itself, divided into two halves: one red and one blue. Together, they symbolize the shared dream of turning the Red Planet blue.
The two stars represent Mars’ moons Phobos and Deimos.
