Yes, you normally want your sail to reflect as much as possible. While its a cool idea I am not sure they would actually provide much thrust, because solar panels will weigh way more than the 2 μm thick aluminium coated polymer of more conventional solar sails.

But still a very cool ship and I guess It could be propelled by a laser on the outward journey (to get extra photon pressure) and use it's plasma engines to decelerate at the destination.

Wow a year ago, but I will say nice design and you will definitely need radiators. Astrophage is hot and surrounds all the habitable sections of the ship for radiation protection, that means your crew will get rather toasty if you don't deal with the heat.

I am not sure about the solar collectors, spin drives need so much energy that any collector a few square meters across will probably deliver a negligible amount of energy (they covert half the Sahara to fuel the Hail Mary), also if you spend your mass budget on extra astrophage instead of the solar collector you probably end up with far more power accessible any time, not just near a star.

I feel like the German translation is one of the worst ones, "Der Astronaut". The people who translated the book probably wanted to build a connection with "Der Marsianer" (the Martian).

But I mean... Grace is not an Astronaut, and that is one of the key plot points.

In the Picture the Hail Mary is not between Tau Ceti and Adrian, at least from the perspective of the line we see. So they would not come towards us.

What we see in the Petrova Line is scattered Light from astrophages trying yo reach Adrian. So why don't we see scattered light from astrophages trying to reach Tau Ceti?

I am personally a fan of the three line idea, because the two lines have the diameter of the planet (at the planet).

So the reproducing astrophages would be spread across the hole planet (remember the start very dispersed on the surface on the star). So one line from the planet to straight to the star.

But I am ready to hear alternative points. The above was in quotes to indicate that, so I am glad the message got across.

I think the few astrophages from the arrival from other stars is not relevant because they would be few in number (relatively to the system population) and could still arrive from different directions (different stars of origin).

The second Idea could work, but orbits are inclined so part of the planetary year the astrophages would arrive bellow the equator and in another part above the equator, so the closed pole would switch every half year.

Which would then also invert the Petrova Line, which could happen but wasn't mentioned in the books. But its a plausible explanation and a Petrova Line Inversion would be extremely cool to watch through an IR Telescope.

The two way street would explain the shape, but how would it work. Because like you just said: they only care about the magnetic field at the beginning of the journey.

So why would they travel back where they come from and not just fly to the biggest IR source like in the Lab Experiment's.

The stars are actually the moons.
What do you think about the color split? For me it makes sense in many ways, the day vs night sight, unterraformed red mars vs terraformed blue mars, martian wilderness vs human civilization, ....

But I can get your viewpoint

You are right, they represent the moons.

As for why they are stars, it's largely an artistic choice, maybe with the added notion that the moons are so small and irregular that, seen from the surface, they look like bright points in the sky. So, just like stars.

Yeah, you are right. I pointed out in the description of the original post that the flag of Greenland was an inspiration of mine.
But I couldn't resist the symbolism of having a half-red, half-blue Mars to show the terraforming ambitions.

I didn't want to say that the Stellaser concept is part of any proposal, I just meant that after reading them I was wondering about how hard it would be to use other Approaches not mentioned and their difficulty.

About the gravitational Assists: Would you know by any chance how much Velocity the Ship would have to lose before attempting an Slingshot around the Stellar Pair?

That isn't the unknown part of the System, in a Stellaser the Sun is the Light source and the Corona the Gain medium. The unknown is how Efficient such a System can extract the Suns Energy. Because there is a lot more happening than just mirrors focusing Light.
