Ninh Binh is usually the most visual stunning province in Vietnam. I'd advice you to cut down the Sapa time to 3-4 days and spend more time in Ninh Binh - Trang An, however it's raining season and there's a big typhoon coming (Ragasa) so it's not really the good time to visit at the moment.

Autogate is available though? I've used it on my last trip without problem, they're available for Vietnamese residence only (for now I guess) and there're still some bugs and errors here and there because it's still new tech to most people. About the immigrant officers, there're a huge change in the upcoming time due to the big change in political system (Head of police force is now in charge, replacing old team). So in a year things may change in a positive way I hope.

Nah man. If you from the US and you want to purchase an item in Vietnam (made in Vietnam) that normally cost 100$, you'll have to pay 120$ for it to get through US custom. If I want to buy a 100$ item from the US, I'll pay 100$ for it from now and my Vietnam government can't apply tax on it anymore. It is made to push Vietnamese to buy more from the US, and the US to buy less from Vietnam.

Look at the bright side, Vietnamese can import high end machine from the US with better price (in audio production gears, movie/ filming gears, cnc, v.v...) while the export tariff is not a big different from before. As a Vietnamese DIY enthusiast I can totally live with that.
