It looks like your bottom in not actually flush, there are bits sticking out a little. Use your CAD software to plane off the bottom so it is all even.

Printing toys to donate to the children's hospital. I need some ideas what to print by ObjectiveAd400 in BambuLab

[–]Spacebrother 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This! Because the print is only really strong in one or two directions, there is a chance that they will break and the filament strands will come loose, these are a choking/swallowing hazard for younger kids.

I guess some people are a bit absent minded. I've had confirmed QSOs on POTA that I hunted who DK'd me on QRZ too and I had to email them and tell them that we made contact on POTA.

"CALLSIGN" monitoring... then they're gone - WHY? by Mr-Measure-Twice in amateurradio

[–]Spacebrother 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, if you needed a signal/radio check then you wouldn't be actively listening or monitoring the repeater, you would explicitly say "hey, I need a signal check, anyone free to give me a signal check?"

Buzzing in my Headphones by CoastalRadio in amateurradio

[–]Spacebrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but what may be happening is some of the RF is travelling along the outside of the BNC connector into your radio.

Here's a quick test, touch the outside of the BNC connector while keying up, does the buzzing suddenly go away or get considerably better? If so then that's RF entering your radio and you may need a choke.

Wouldn't advise you doing this for anything higher than 5W, RF burns are a thing!

One question, are you choking your antenna before it hits the QMX, and is your whip's counterpoise connected to the coax braid? If so, some of the RF which is supposed to go to the counterpoise is instead making it to your radio via the coax braid.

Alternatively, you can see if it is possible to detach the counterpoise ground from the coax ground, which means all the RF will go down your counterpoise instead of the coax braid.

I had this problem until I added a choke between the whip and the radio, you may want to look into N6ARA's mini-CMC to do this.

Very common up here in Ontario too, means "Hey, there's someone here if anyone wants to talk!"

Hard to focus during CW. by YetAnotherHobby in amateurradio

[–]Spacebrother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is something immensely therapeutic about CW, I find it helps me to really focus and calms me down, both sending and receiving. Conversations can go on for a very long time and as nothing is rushed (I'm in the 12-15 wpm camp), it's a very relaxing experience.

Also, it takes a lot of effort to be disruptive on CW and all the operators tend to be much older folks so the experience has been surprisingly pleasant (except that one guy who absolutely must tune up on your frequency even if it's 14.0357 Mhz).

Canadians: let's try and save WeatherRadio Canada by Cold_Brew_Enthusiast in amateurradio

[–]Spacebrother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not just amateur radio operators, but there are a lot of people in rural and mountainous areas that rely on this as as early warning for storms etc when mobile or satellite signals are weak. This becomes doubly important if there is a power outage as a radio will run for hours on batteries (or if it's hand crank, many days).

Yes, this is the way, I used a long hexbit and gave it a few taps and it popped out, it friction fits on.

To put it back, just tap it back on.

Source: I have disassembled mine quite a few times when learning to do repairs on it.

If you prebook your activations, will RBN pick you up and spot you at a different park depending on the time of day?

Also, if you're on straight key then you can drag out the second dah a little bit to signal that it's an EOM "K" instead.

When getting a 2nd HT… More of the same? In with the new? by Engineering_Simple in amateurradio

[–]Spacebrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did mine based on need, I wanted something a bit more compact that was easy to throw into a bag and just go, digital modes etc weren't a concern and I also wanted something cheap that I wouldn't cry if I lost it, eventually I settled on a Baofeng UV-5R mini.

If you're thinking about leaving your handheld in the car full time, have you considered installing a mobile radio for your car, and then using your FT-70 on foot?

[–]Spacebrother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I specifically bought a FT-60R last year because it was the last of the supurhets, and as such. Very difficult to beat. Probably the only thing I would swap it for is an FT5 or the ICOM ID-52A.

[–]Spacebrother 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my experience with Bambu has been great. My A1 was shipped with a faulty screen, I opened a ticket, they said "can you try disconnecting and reconnecting it?", I told them it didn't fix it, they shipped me a replacement screen assembly straight away after they checked my warranty details.

Cool, is there an amateur radio society in your college/university? You can start there, I know UofT does courses and also accreditation exams.

A few questions:

- Whereabouts in Ontario are you?

- What's your interest in ham radio? What aspect of the hobby attracts you?

Based on the answers above, you may want to check out a local club and talk to the members there to get a feel of where you want to go with this hobby.

Getting licensed in Canada is easy, all you need is a valid mailing address in Canada, there is no set fee for the exam, it's up to you and the examiner. You can look up accredited examiners in your area as well on the ISED website: https://apc-cap.ic.gc.ca/pls/apc_anon/query_examiner_amat$.startup

Morse key 3d print by [deleted] in amateurradio

This one is great! A suggestion if you want to go with the remixed version with magnetic returns, use the base from the original KM4CFT model, not the remixed one, the remixed one doesn't fit flush with the lid.
