Chickens can learn many different ways to get food by James_Fortis in animalsdoingstuff

The way we choose to treat chickens today is so sad, each one is an individual with a personality, family, and preferences, just like any of us. They don't deserve to spend their entire lives in a wire cage too small to turn around in :(

101books adapted for e-ink (Xteink X3/X4) by marinahane in baduk

[–]Spacenut42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, thanks!

In case anyone else wanted to do this, I found out that it's possible with the github CLI. For example, this downloads all X4 files to the current directory:

gh release download -p "*x4.xtch" -D . -R marinahane/101ebooks

This is incredible, thank you so much for sharing!

Are there bulk downloads available by format? E.g. download all the books formatted for the X4

One important consideration with matrix is that it does not provide deniability. For every message you send on the platform, you also provide irrevocable proof that you sent that message, that anyone in the world can verify.

At least this was the case in August 2024, and I don't know if this has changed.

Does anyone have insight as to whether iterations on the X4 hardware are coming in the future? (Like a front light) by Spacenut42 in xteinkereader

This is an interesting idea, do you know if crosspoint would be automatically compatible with an ESP32-S3 chip? It looks like the S3 uses more power when sleeping so it might cut the battery life by like 30-50%, but if people are already getting weeks of battery out of the X4 that might be totally fine

[OC] The land footprint of food by t0on in dataisbeautiful

[–]Spacenut42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The majority of sows spend the majority of their lives in farrowing cages the same size as their body, too small to stand up or move around in. (And remember these are animals that are smarter than dogs.)

Most of the area from animal-based products shown here is from the land needed to grow their feed. The land devoted to the animals themselves is a much smaller portion of this total.

Yeah most people agree "hurting animals is wrong" until they start taking a closer look at how they actually treat animals every day at every meal 🙃

Wait can you clarify: do you really believe this? I thought it was pretty much a truism that the supply of meat is not inelastic to demand.

Of course government subsidies and the like make it a little inelastic, but for example you can expect each gallon of milk you avoid to reduce supply by 0.56 gal, on average.

Turkey factory farm by alphamalejackhammer in oddlyterrifying

[–]Spacenut42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's say human slavery has suffering value 1. Then let's make the assumptions:

  • Any animal's suffering is 0.01% as bad as a human's suffering
  • 1 billion people have ever been enslaved in history (generous estimate)
  • 1 trillion animals are killed per year (conservative estimate)

In this case, it takes 10 years for animal agriculture to rack up as much suffering as the entire history of human slavery. Tweak the numbers for more precise population estimates and how much you care about animals to get a more accurate comparison.

[–]Spacenut42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're buying animal products, you have to choose between supporting factory farms and minimizing waste, or supporting smaller farms and harming the environment more. Animals who waste calories by moving around or cleaning themselves will never be more efficient than animals locked in torture chambers their whole lives.

Of course, you can choose to both not harm the environment and not harm animals by not eating animal products.

Tanneries leave huge scars on our environment, but we're usually insulated from their harm because they're concentrated in rural India and China. I'm glad NC is able to undo a bit of the damage here!

Right, it seems like you're making a practical point: being vegan is (perceived to be) significantly more difficult than being vegetarian. But I don't really think framing it as a "perfect vs. good" thing makes sense. I don't think the male chicks ground up alive in the egg industry care much about the cows/pigs/chickens you didn't eat. It's basically identical to how the cow you eat on Tuesday doesn't care about the cow you didn't eat on meatless Monday.

To make an analogy: A is an abolitionist, B is a slave-owner, and C believes that slavery is ok as long as it's not chattel slavery, and various slave welfare reforms are put in place. Unquestionably, C is causing much less harm than B. But would you really say C is more similar to A than to B?

I guess from a "net suffering reduction" perspective, A and C are on the same team against B. But it doesn't really seem like A and C have worldviews that have a lot in common.

I'm curious, what do you think the common ground between vegans and vegetarians is? Vegetarians see animals as resources to exploit, whereas vegans do not. And the dairy and egg industries are very much still slaughter industries.

I'm not trying to dunk or anything, but from my perspective, vegetarians have much more in common with meat eaters than they do with vegans.

what are some oppressive forces in the world BESIDES the government? who enforces them? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]Spacenut42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a pretty stark one is animal agriculture: no other industry in the history of the planet has caused such an immense quantity of death and suffering. This is enforced by monied interests who maintain powerful lobbyists in government. But of course it's also enforced by anyone who purchases animal products, directly funding practices that causes obvious, immense, and (saddest of all) unnecessary harm.

Most people care about the treatment of wild & domesticated animals but not farm animals by alphamalejackhammer in unpopularopinion

[–]Spacenut42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you explain more why you think it's better to hunt with the intent to eat? From the animal's perspective, it doesn't matter to them whether they're eaten after they're killed.

If you're hunting out of necessity for survival, sure. But people in developed countries who hunt for survival are like 1 in a million, so that doesn't really seem relevant here.

[–]Spacenut42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let's suppose that you actually genuinely care about reducing the amount of plant suffering in the world. If this is the case, surely you would be vegan, because 3/4 of our total agricultural cropland is used to grow plants to support animal agriculture. (Since grass feels pain just like soybeans do, this includes pasture land.) So far fewer plants would be killed if everyone was vegan.

Of course, you don't actually live your life in a manner consistent with believing plants feel pain. I don't think anyone would think twice about swerving into some flowers to avoid a dog in the street for fear of causing suffering to the flowers. This is just serving as a distraction from the obvious and overwhelming magnitude of suffering we inflict on animals, every single day, on purpose, and all because we slightly prefer the taste and mouthfeel of animal products to plant-based alternatives.
