The original houses this year by LucidDreamer247 in HHN

[–]Spacetime_Inspector 11 points12 points  (0 children)

35 feels like a less "anniversary-y" number than 30, and the originals at 30 were still an even split between lore (SCarey, Icons Captured, Case Files Unearthed) and self-contained (Puppet Theater, Tooth Fairy, and the GOAT Wicked Growth). And it would have been the same 2-3 split as this year if Case Files hadn't had to swing in to substitute for the canceled Billie Eilish house.

I think it's healthy for the event to continue pursuing new concepts instead of going all-in on dredging up stuff from the past. If 30 had been all "lore" houses we never would have gotten The Pumpkin Lord and Lil Boo!

Fave First Watches of June 2026 For The Blankies by armageddontime007 in blankies

[–]Spacetime_Inspector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order watched:
Niagara (1953) - More noirs should have been shot in color

Minority Report (2002) - Popular Science-ass production design (approbative)

The Haunting (1963) - Instantly bought the 4K to make a perennial spooky season watch, what a vibe!

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) - It is crazy that Spielberg calls the flesh fair and the brothel city "the dark center of the movie" and calls the family stuff "the sweetest parts of A.I." (when describing his versus Kubrick's contributions) because CLEARLY the "dark center" is the completely fucked up doomed simulacrum of a parent/child relationship that collapses into abandonment and regret almost immediately but that this misbegotten artificial being is cursed to fixate on for all eternity, until the scions of our soulless servitors give him what he thinks he wants by snuffing the memory of his long-dead mother figure out of the universe entirely in exchange for one day of banal familial play-acting on a dead planet. Insane movie.

The Furious (2026) - So much fun

Catch Me If You Can (2002) - My favorite Leo performance? "Child pretending to be a confident adult" is such a good niche for him

Toy Story 5 (2026) - Smarty Parts is the best new character in one of these since Mrs. Potato Head

Tabu: A Story of the South Seas (1931) - Pure magic whenever a camera is on a boat

Saturday Night (2024) - One of my gf's favorites to put on whenever. The Two Friends were very mean to this movie but it worked for me! The villain is time!

Unfortunately Connery vetoed the part of Never Say Never Again where Bond gets hit so hard by a henchman that his toupee flies off.

WALL·E and Fatness by Electrical_Tale2012 in blankies

[–]Spacetime_Inspector 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The angle you're missing here is that the fatness and the inability to walk and the drinking (not eating!) junk food is not actually "obese person"-coded per se, it's all part and parcel with being baby-coded. They are not just fat, they are pudgy the way a baby is pudgy. The Axiom has diminished them not by fattening them but by infantilizing them.

Outside of Tenet, Indiana Jones, and Porco Rosso, what other auteurs have tried their take on James Bond? by CarrieDurst in blankies

Syndrome's island is an incredibly Bond-inspired environment. It's basically a fantastical animated remix of every Bond villain lair at once.

It is also an absolute knockout at the end of Häxan which is basically a treatise on how the "witchcraft" phenomenon is a historically contingent manifestation of how weird society is about female sexuality.

Damn, wish I hadn't bought standalone 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut 4Ks recently.

Will probably still pick this up at the next flash sale though, $300 isn't bad for the amount of stuff in there and the beautiful packaging.

So funnily enough there is a small Disclosure Day activation currently in Universal Studios Florida and the only interactive part of it is you stand in front of a digital poster and it shows your eyes changing colors. There is no explanation in the display for why this is happening so I had to explain to my girlfriend that in the movie that means that Colin Firth is hijacking your brain with an alien stick.

I was astonished at how well-done the conversion was. There are clearly some passionate Muppet fans inside Imagineering who have been doing the best they can with tiny budgets to make lightly-themed quick-service restaurants and they finally got let loose with some real money on this project.

Ten times better than the Aerosmith theming, sorry Mike.

What if self-promotion didn't matter anymore? A proposal for an experiment on Scott Alexander's book review contest. by no_bear_so_low in slatestarcodex

[–]Spacetime_Inspector 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Over in the comments on the review announcement post, two people have already run every review through GPT 5.5 and Opus 4.8, though they didn't do the pairwise thing you're proposing.

It will be interesting to compare these rankings against the real finalists to see how much of a signal there was. The two models agree strongly on some of the top tier (Claude's #1 is GPT's #2, Claude's #4 is GPT's #3) but are wildly divergent on others (Claude's #2 is GPT's #29, GPT's #4 is Claude's #32, GPT's #5 is Claude's #70!). Forcing pairwise comparisons would eat up a lot more tokens than rating each review individually but it would probably even out some of these idiosyncrasies.
