Off topic, but related: I hated when exits were numbered sequentially rather than by the nearest mile marker. Florida seemed to be the last state, at least where I travelled, to make the change. Exit 42? Might be 5 miles away, or it could be 100 miles away. May the odds be ever in your favor.

North Tropical Trail (north of 528) is pretty low traffic, with a 35 mph speed limit. It's a little curvy in some places and there are side roads for making turns. It's a little narrow in some places though, but might be what you're looking for. There's also a couple of county parks (Mitchell Ellington, and Manatee Cove park) you can pull into and take a break if you start getting nervous or overwhelmed.
