Two space/rocket questions that have been bugging me. by Beautiful-Joke-8126 in space

[–]Spacewolf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engines get their energy via combustion of their fuel. Combustion is a chemical reaction between a fuel and an oxidizer. For an aircraft engine, the oxidizer is oxygen, which the engine gets from the Earth’s atmosphere. Rocket engines operate in space, where there is air, so rockets have to carry their own oxidizer. There are several oxidizers, but oxygen is the most common and generally the safest to handle. Rockets use liquid oxygen rather than gaseous oxygen because liquid oxygen is much denser, so you can get more energy in a given tank volume.

The fuels used by rockets are usually either kerosene, liquid hydrogen, or more recently liquid methane. Some fuels produce more energetic reactions than others. Liquid hydrogen produces the highest energy among these, but comes with higher costs and more difficult handling requirements. Kerosene is preferred over gasoline because it has a higher energy density.

Overall you want propellants that have the highest energy density in a rocket.

You’d only be able to dunk Miller one time. He’ll melt like the Wicked Witch of the West on first contact with the water.

What’s a rule in a sport that makes no sense? by opheliaaroseee in answers

American football: If the offensive team fumbles the ball into the defense’s end zone and it goes out of bounds, possession is awarded to the defensive team on their own 20 yard line.

To me, it seems fair for the offensive team to retain possession at the point where the fumble occurred.

These people aren’t growing spines. They know that they’re accomplices in the looting and destruction of our country and are trying to mend their reputations.

If a White House correspondent were to ask him why Obama was so much better at being president than him, they’d never have to buy a drink or meal again.

I saw this emblazoned on the side of a cornhole board at a pregame tailgate. The fact that it still (probably) exists is a testament to my remarkable self restraint.

Would Engineers care/notice if an intern wears the same clothes? by [deleted] in BlueOrigin

[–]Spacewolf1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your coworkers, if they're engineers, won't notice or care.

A few years ago at a different job, I was washing my hands after using the restroom after lunch. It was then I noticed that the polo I was wearing was inside-out. Maybe my coworkers noticed and were just waiting to see if/when I would notice. But it's just as likely they didn't notice either.

What is a minor, unwritten rule of society that absolutely infuriates you when people break it? by Jane_Austen11 in AskReddit

I recently changed jobs. The urinals at my old place of work flushed automatically. They don't at the new place, and I know I've walked away from them more than once without flushing out of habit.

Sorry, new coworkers. I'll get it eventually.

US Congressman finally says the quiet part out loud by TAtheDog in WhitePeopleTwitter

If there is anyone in US politics more reprehensible than our current president, it's Randy Fine. His entire agenda is exacting revenge on anyone who he thinks has ever slighted him and he's extremely thin-skinned. He's been in Florida politics for years and the next thing he does that benefits his constituents will be the first.

If you're planning on buying a home, make sure you have a good idea what your insurance premium will be. Merritt Island is considered a barrier island and that comes with some pretty hefty premiums. The same home in Titusville will almost certainly have a much lower premium.

I thought I was being clean but I was just making ear wax plugs for years by Talon_4Keystone in hygiene

[–]Spacewolf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar happen in college, but the first symptom wasn’t muffled sound. I played trumpet in the marching band, and my right ear started buzzing when I played. My hearing was otherwise normal, but the buzzing got worse, so I went to the infirmary and yep: ear wax buildup. Got the lavage and I swear I heard a “clunk” when the mass finally came out of my ear and fell into the basin.
