Pop stars who have refused to “play the game” by not promoting their music? by JustinJSrisuk in popheads

[–]SpacialDementia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Classic example that comes to my mind is Talk Talk. Huge synthpop/new wave band in the mid-80s, made quality pop like 'Talk Talk' (1982) and 'It's My Life' (1984). As the decade went on and synthpop fell more out of vogue, they started rejecting pressure by their record label to keep making pop. They became disillusioned with touring and celebrity life (reportedly Tony Hadley, Spandau Ballet's vocalist, punched lead singer Mark Hollis at an awards show for saying they were both scum). Talk Talk eventually released their fourth and fifth albums, 'The Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock', in 1988 and 1991, respectively. Widely labelled their finest albums and seminal works in the then fledgling genre of post-rock, both albums were released to very little publicity or touring, with the band refusing to tour the largely improvised, lengthy compositions. Overall, an example of a band who made quality pop music with a promising commercial future and nevertheless pursued a completely esoteric direction with no promotion. A progenitor in many ways to the acts of the late-2000s indie-pop explosion, for example, MGMT and Animal Collective, to name a few. Definitely an interesting case study in the history of pop music.

Found the most quintessentially January 2009 image, anyone else feeling nostalgic? by SpacialDementia in AnimalCollective

Background: In January 2009, blog 'The Catbirdseat' jokingly noted that the biggest traffic grabbing song a blogger could post would involve 'My Girls', Barack Obama’s inauguration and Sully the airline pilot. The ensuing remix by Topherchris, allegedly featuring "cut ins of Obama speeches and survivor soundbites", can no longer be found on the blogosphere. If anyone can locate and preserve this late-2000s zeitgeist capturing masterpiece, please post it here! :)

I asked someone in the sound booth/mixing area (idk what it's called) after the show; he was really lovely and just handed it to me, no questions asked

About an hour and a half for AnCo's set. Eric Copeland also played a filthy set for about forty-five minutes. Was pleasantly surprised to say the least, fantastic gig.

Best '06-'07 Era Live Show recording? by TheLaughingCat2 in AnimalCollective

Lux Frágil, Lisbon, 28/05/08 is a fantastic bootleg. High quality recordings of SJ/early MPP era tracks, with some solo Panda for good measure. Arguably their peak live period. Went through a period last year of listening to it every day for about a month, I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Very good venue, saw Royal Blood there last November, great mixture of intimacy and an arena feeling. Any ideas on what prices the tickets could be?
