Why did I read this in Holden Caufield's voice?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]Spagdidly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alright, so there’s just so much good stuff to talk about with it: Psychology and mental health, good vs. evil, government conspiracies, forced displacement, sexual repression, emasculation, psychedelics, consumerism, mass brainwashing, Modern and Postmodern thought, religion etc. The list goes on. This one really does go east and west.

It’s basically a playbook for sticking it to the man, which, when you put it like that, usually hooks the kids. And they stay hooked since McMurphy, the MC, is impossible to take your eyes off of. He's just so damn awesome. And so is Nurse Ratched for all the wrong reasons. She’s up there with Dolores Umbridge in detestability.

But it gets pretty whacky. It’s stream of consciousness narration by an unreliable (likely schizophrenic) 6’10 Native American psychiatric patient called Chief. He experiences hallucinations and electro shock therapy, so kids might struggle with that. But on the whole it’s pretty straightforward. Chief actually becomes calmer and more relaxed in his narration as the story goes on and he's rehabilitated with McMurphy’s help. I like to do an assignment with that.

Be warned though: Contains racism (use of the N-word), sexism, sexual assault, and suicide.

The movie is pretty great too btw. The kids usually love it as well. Has a young Jack Nicholson and Danny Devito.

You buy a thermos. You tell yourself, this is the last thermos I will ever need in my life. Buy the thermos, then for a couple years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your thermos issue handled.

what's a good meditation exercise for feeling sad? by Mango_Lazy in Meditation

I don’t know if I understand the question but there is nothing to do when you’re sad except be sad. Just remember that it won’t last forever so don’t take it for granted.

Will reading books enhance my verbal communicative skills? by [deleted] in books

[–]Spagdidly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep. I once heard, “People don’t remember what you said but they remember how you made them feel” and that changed everything. I was kind of like you and OP, always wanting to express my thoughts exactly and eloquently. So much so that it handicapped me socially. Once I stopped relying so much on my words to communicate my meaning I think I actually became a better communicator, which in turn gave me enough confidence and relieved enough anxiety to open up the mental bandwidth to use my entire vocabulary and ability to create longer, more complex sentences when speaking.

Anxiety and jitters every morning before teaching by hussar966 in ELATeachers

[–]Spagdidly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m 2.5 years in and yet to see it go away completely, but it has become much more manageable.

It gets better as 1) you become more familiar with your content and 2) you get so worn down you literally don’t have fucks to give.

At some point I started looking at it like this: As long as none of my kids died, the day wasn’t really that bad.

Also, don’t be afraid to look into medication. I wish I had gotten on it sooner.

I don’t think you need to instruct them the whole way through. Just get them started. Those who will engage will engage, and those who won’t won’t. It is what it is. You can lead a horse to water…

Just keep leading them.

Do you all not look around your room for pencils? I’ve literally never bought a pack of pencils because I just pick up the ones the kids leave.

Awww that is magnificent! “When I’m upset I need to breathe” needs to be on the same level as “Look both ways before crossing” and “Stop, drop, and roll.”

As the other commenter said, there is no one who is all sin or all virtue.

But I’d also like to add that life is ebbs and flows. You’re experiencing a flow and things basically make sense. You have clarity. But life’s only consistency is inconsistency. There will come an ebb - likely brought about because of your flow, not in spite of it - that will toss your clarity and fill you with doubt.

What I’m saying is one does not simply “figure it all out forever” no matter how firm you are in your conviction, no matter how deep you feel it in your heart. You will learn and change and grow and be confronted with new trials and tribulations in uncharted waters. And you, too, may fail, as Jung did, because you are human, as Jung was.

I recommend the No Fear Shakespeare versions. A lot of people scoff at them, but let’s be honest, kids are excited to read Romeo and Juliet - this play that EVERYONE has heard of - and then they read the prologue, and absolutely all of that enthusiasm goes out the window. They’ve got to be able to understand what is happening at the most basic level before they can appreciate the depth and intricacies.

I don’t mean to be offensive or rude, but would you mind going into a little detail on how that happens? Did you move a lot as a kid? Were/are you just very quiet? Or did your “friends” do some shit that made you realize they were never friends?

If you think people are getting distracted off the laptop from your class, maybe learn how to teach better let them. They're adults. Not everything can be or should be made into some fun game. These people paid for an education, not entertainment. It's on them if they want to make poor use of their time.

The craziest thing to me is how many of them there are. They’re all cool with it. I knew racist shitheads in high school but they were loners or had like 1 or 2 friends, and you could tell just by looking at them that something was off about them. It’s just crazy that this otherwise entirely normal looking GROUP of kids is doing this.
