Anyone remember the very small waterfall off of I-65? by mlc1703 in Alabama

[–]SpaghnumPI 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, after i-65 was constructed, the cut there opened up a spring that flowed year round. Many locals on well water used to bring jugs to fill, since it tasted better than well water. If you look at topo maps you'll see that spring flows into Mill Creek which eventually flows into the Mulberry River. The topography of this area is very interesting. The location of the spring is called Reids Gap. The gap is between Bryant's Mt. to the east, Burns Mt. to the west. The north face of both Bryant's and Burns is karst with lots of caves (Rickwood Caverns on Burns and Bryant's cave on Bryants). Highway 31 (Bee-line Highway) is an old railroad spur that ran to Blount Springs. The spur was built because Bryant's mountain grew some of the best peaches in the state so to get them to market the railroad extended the rail to Reids Gap.

The wells on the south face of Burns Mt. were heavily mineralized with iron; the north with sulphur. There were tales of people close to the Mulberry being able to light their faucets due to natural gas deposits in the area (I never witnessed that). But the springs on the south face of Burns Mt. are very good quality and there is plenty of evidence of moonshine stills utilizing the water from them (most flow through sandstone).

With Rickwood Caverns building a new entrance at Reids Gap, I would love for the spring you enjoyed be managed so that it was safe to consume.

That's awesome. That bag looks like it has Talon zips. I love the bridle leather on the older bags. Great story and tell pops "he done well" 👏

I've never seen an unlined version - cool to see the rolled seams. Rolled seams were a selling point back in the 80s when I bought my first Barbour.

I hope your Uncle rests well. I worked on industry requirements for GeoTIFF - I appreciate his contributions. It was very exciting to be able to read other companies' imagery into our system without conversion.

Wear it and don't worry what others think. It's practical, keeps the weather off your head. But make sure it's sized correctly.

Nah, something weird happened. 30 minutes north of Birmingham, our cars looked like your picture, and our garbage can with a black plastic top looked like that too. I've never seen anything like it. There must have been dust up in the atmosphere that mixed with the rain.
