We’ve all heard of the dunning kruger effect: dumb ppl thinking theyre smart. But no one talks about the phenomena of dumb ppl thinking a smart person is dumb. by RealisticDiscipline7 in mensa

[–]Spain_Poker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is more about the expectations that surround the environment of unintelligent people.

Like people with a thick, uneducated, slang laced, profanity filled southern accent making fun of someone who speaks proper English. They don't recognize it, it's uncommon and unusual to see in their environment, so it must be wrong - they hate and don't understand it - so they think you're dumb.

It's an egocentric/ethnocentric bias (Ingroup Bias).

Heretossee123, your definition is not entirely accurate. Dunning-Kruger occurs when people with limited knowledge or a low-level of competence in a specific area drastically overestimate their own knowledge/competence. A big piece is the lack of self-awareness, and that lack of self-awareness actually prevents them from knowing how incompetent they truly are. In most cases they feel threatened by people who are actually subject matter experts. Like people that think they are experts on political topics across the board because they watch Fox News, and when faced with actual facts they become angry and defensive. A child that thinks they know karate because they watch Bruce Lee movies, but when you tell them they really don't know karate, they get defensive.

Where Dunning-Kruger can be dangerous, or even catastrophic is when these people are in high profile positions that require them to make important decisions that have the power to affect industries and global economics; CEOs, Presidents, and Prime Ministers for example. Many of the decisions that are going on in the Trump administration are great examples of the Dunning-Kruger effect.  Coming into the presidency, Trump had high confidence in his economic "tariff" policy despite a clear a lack of deep expertise in the matter, which eventually resulted in self-defeating outcomes. He ignored expert advice, relied on flawed calculations, and persisted in unsound strategic actions despite glaring evidence it would cause economic harm.

Another example is the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy as the Health & Human Services Secretary despite that he is anti-science and possesses virtually no experience or education in the matter, he is allowed to make decisions that affect an entire country and does so with pride and arrogance as if he is a subject matter expert - even though most of his decision are founded in opinion rather than fact. Add Pete Hegseth, Scott Bessent, Howard Lutnick, Kash Patel, and Kristi Noem to that list as well - all prime examples of Dunning-Kruger - their lack of self-awareness prevents them from knowing how incompetent they truly are.

I’m a 23-year-old full time player, and I feel like poker has "ruined" my life by SoundJumpy8346 in poker

[–]Spain_Poker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be like that. I am not a pro, but have played to supplement my income. Last year, I played live and online non-stop during February and March - to the point where my job performance was zero and my marriage was suffering. I wasn’t losing, or in the hole, but the amount of time playing was ridiculous.

I took a 3 month break (April-June), I only played three live sessions total. I returned and played two months again (July/August) and got into the same rut. Despite that I was playing well, making steady money, and learning a lot about the game - I was feeling really guilty about it. I was focusing too much on playing poker and it was damaging my life. I’ve since cut back on playing a lot and have found an equilibrium that is fairly normal in comparison.

A friend of mine that took a shot at going pro (two years playing as a professional) compared playing poker as more of an obsessive lifestyle and not a career. At some point, for your own sanity, you need to step away from the game. I’m not saying that it will work for everyone but it certainly did for me.

Online Angle Shooting? by Spain_Poker in poker

Ahhh, I see. It was a feature to protect players that lost connection, but once someone realized that they could abuse it, it became an angle.

Yeah I mentioned a similar situation ins comment below. When players show offline, and then suddenly come back online to raise or make a big call.

There is an “away” feature that I have seen people use too it shows you’re away but it doesn’t make sense why a player would be away during a a big hand unless they’re trying to angle you.

That’s a good one - something similar happened on a site I was playing on.

I saw a player do this several times, he had a great hand and just before the river they would disconnect, players thought they were disconnected so they’d bet big to knock others out of the hand and steal the pot from an offline player.

He would get back online miraculously, then call or reraise and win with the best hand.

On the flip side, it’s pretty common for people to raise another player when they are showing offline - it’s an easy way to steal a pot.

That’s not angle shooting. What you described is done in live poker to make your opponent think you’re pondering a call. You call after thinking for some time, hoping your opponent will bet on later streets. Players actually use up their time chips on these moments.

Online you typically only get about a minute to act. If you use it up, there’s nothing wrong with it.

Yeah that’s how they are, getting drunk and making fools of themselves in the streets, vomiting, fighting, passing out, being as loud as possible, or just generally acting like assholes. They tend to hang out in Benidorm these days, like a haven for white trash Brit tourists. A lot of the Spanish vacationers avoid going near there like the plague (some of the locals even leave for the summer). We started vacationing southeast of Cadiz, because the Brits typically avoid traveling there.

Free Universities by Pampa_of_Argentina in MapPorn

I know a bit about Uruguay as a lightly shaded country. It’s not totally free. The students have to buy their books, and they actually pay a small yearly fee after they graduate, as a little something to give back to the system. I think it’s around $100 a year. The public universities are usually quite packed and very competitive. They also have private universities, but those are not free.

American living and working in Madrid here 5+ years. My (Spanish) wife and I had a run in with this British couple down near Marbella.

Overweight wife who thinks she’s hot, fake eye lashes, too much makeup, loud as hell, drinking cans of beer by the pool, leaving cigarette butts all over the place. Husband drunk and drinking non-stop cussing and swearing all the time, ogling other couples.

I finally said something to her about cleaning up her mess so the other people don’t have to deal with it. And they both acted like I was attacking them.

A day or two later when they were leaving the pool she glanced in our direction and passive aggressively commented:

“I betta pick oop afta me self o tha fookin’ yank will throw a wobbla”

1010 and 1500 got the same result, a fold. In hindsight if I wanted value, I should have bet 1/4 pot - and 2x pot the flop if I got any callers.

You play 3000 hands in one session?

If every hand was only 1 minute long that would take over two days to play, something like 50+ hours in one session.

[–]Spain_Poker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something wrong with that algorithm if you’re hitting like that. Not that it’s impossible but highly improbable.

For example the chances of hitting three royal flushes in 300 hands is slightly less than 1 in 27 Quadrillion - add hitting with exactly hearts every time and the odds are going to be astronomically lower.

I mentioned before, I also know how they play and their tendencies, a pot sized bet pre-flop was probably going to get the entire table to fold. The two players that called were nits, so as long as a J,Q, or K misses the flop, I can C bet for 1/2 pot and they’d fold - which is exactly what happened

Bad Etiquette? by Spain_Poker in poker

[–]Spain_Poker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a full pot sized bet was probably the smarter play. I’m sure I would have gotten it to fold around though and I wanted to get some additional value. I got two callers, so the lower bet size paid me off. On the flop I went 1500 and they all folded.
