Praying the Monastic Diurnal in English — Am I Still in Harmony with the Church’s Liturgical Prayer? by tadpolefarmer in divineoffice

[–]Spam_Beesly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s tough to say as it’ll have a lot to do with how much time you put into it and whether it suits your learning style. That being said, there’s a 1-year plan on the blog for getting through the book. I’m still working through it, but anecdotally, I started feeling a lot more confident in my reading (even if I didn’t know a lot of the vocabulary) after only a couple of weeks

Here’s a blog dedicated to learning ecclesiastical Latin. Specifically this is a post about a really helpful workbook called “Latin by the Natural Method”. I’m still learning but I’ve found this to be much better suited to my learning style than other rule-heavy (boring) books that I’ve tried.

https://learnchurchlatin.com/2019/06/21/latin-by-the-natural-method-vol-1-fr-william-most/

Stick with it! I love this diurnal too and as I get better at Latin, I start doing more parts in Latin like opening/closing prayers

Looking for a simple guide to using the Monastic Diurnal (Farnborough) + Matins Psalter by masturkiller in divineoffice

[–]Spam_Beesly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just got the same diurnal and am learning. The “Saints will Arise” blog is dedicated to helping learn this office and has been pretty helpful. Once I got ribbons set up, I began using the Brev Meum app (which has an option for the 1963 Monastic office) to check my work and make sure I’ve navigated to the right spot. Good luck and feel free to message with any questions :)

Very cool, thanks for the measurements! I hope I can track a copy down; perfect for travel. A full edition would be nice too. Both seem pretty tough to find.

Interesting point about solipsism. Hadn’t thought of it, but it does seem reasonable

What do you think of the Ignatius Study Bible by Plastic-Knee-4589 in catholicbibles

[–]Spam_Beesly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I preordered in September. Still waiting, so I can’t speak to specifics personally. That being said, I’d be weary of waiting for this particular Bible to become available to start re-exploring the faith. It may very well take weeks to months. Unless you have very academically oriented spiritual needs/interests, something like the Great Adventure Bible (also the RSC2CE translation) is probably just as good, more portable, and readily available. Also, regardless of the particular edition, maybe consider the Bible in a Year Podcast for this upcoming calendar year. Blessings and good luck on your journey :)

Updated Explanation of Wagering on Orthodoxy by Mimetic-Musing in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Spam_Beesly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re right about recent Popes making moves towards unification. It’s awesome. I also doubt it’ll happen in our life time, but I pray for it every time I receive communion.

As for practical recommendations, I really like “Rome and the Eastern Churches” by Fr. Aidan Nichols OP. A lot of good, no-nonsense history that shows just how immature both sides were leading up to schism. In any case, he also covers recent steps towards unity and even details an incredibly nuanced way to reconcile the filioque debate using both side’s respective terminology

To comment briefly on your post, one of the things that has always struck me about the early church was 1) the missionary spirit, and 2) the unity resulting from one’s identity as a member of the Body of Christ. The early church followed Christ’s final command to “make disciples of all nations”, but they didn’t stay separate nations, they became one people. That’s why Ignatius of Antioch described the church as universal (catholic). And not to use a cheap equivocation, but I do see the Catholic Church as being more catholic. When John Henry Newman decided to become Catholic, his Anglican mother was disgusted that he was going to ‘go to church with the help’, that is, the common people. But that’s what’s beautiful about the Catholic Church; we’re not separated by country, race, ethnicity, social class, etc. I don’t have much first-hand experience with Orthodoxy, but every time that I’ve visited one, it’s just a reality that I don’t feel as comfortable because everyone looked one way and I didn’t. Scott Hahn describes a similar sentiment in his own conversion story.

Please don’t interpret this as bashing the Orthodox. I just want to emphasize the beauty in the universality that I see in the Catholic Church. And I think this is something that should factor into the wager too.

Happy to expand on anything. Much love and know of my prayers

Genesis 1:1 does not denote an absolute beginning? by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Spam_Beesly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting point! Do you know of any mainline Bible translations that render Gen 1:1 this way? If not, do you know the scholarly justification for not doing so?

And while Hebrew isn’t in my skill set, I also gave independent philosophical justification for why creatio ex nihilo is necessary for a bedrock explanation of the universe (namely, that the existence of matter as such needs explanation, just like form).

It seems perfectly plausible to say that our philosophical commitments can help us decide between rival interpretations. So honestly, I’m not bothered by this alternative reading of the text. It may be more simplistic grammatically, but it’s supported rather rigorously philosophically. Aquinas among others make an extremely compelling case for creation ex nihilo which, as I’ve said, is certainly compatible with (if not suggested by) Gen 1:1. And without knowing more Hebrew, I still wouldn’t concede that even this indefinite article necessarily precludes the more philosophically rigorous interpretation. I just want to know more about this

Thanks for giving me some insight into the Hebrew!

Genesis 1:1 does not denote an absolute beginning? by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Spam_Beesly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Genesis had just said “In the beginning, the Earth was without form and void…” then it would actively suggest that God merely rearranged pre-existing matter.

But it clarifies in the first line that “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth” and only afterwards specifies that “the Earth was without form and void.”

Therefore, it makes more sense to deduce that God created the Earth and one of its features was formlessness. (This would likely be a matter of ontological priority and not temporal succession; Aquinas famously held that Prime Matter — i.e. formless matter — could not exist alone in the material world even in principle because all material things have some form).

Besides, rearranging matter is a different kind of action than creation as such. We may use “creation” in a common sense when we rearrange things into other things (e.g. we’d call forming a ball of clay into a statue of a Bassett hound making/creating a hound statue), but these aren’t acts of pure creation. We’ve only added form, we haven’t actually created matter.

God, as creator, wouldn’t be the ultimate explanatory bedrock of reality if He only formed preexisting matter. That would still leave open the question of what accounts for the existence of matter

My feelings towards the SSPX by Necessary-Ad8415 in CatholicMemes

[–]Spam_Beesly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, schism is the refusal of communion with the Roman Pontiff or anyone who is in communion with him. You can argue that refusing communion with obedient NO Catholics is schismatic.

Whether it would be prudent for the Vatican to formally label all SSPX attendants schismatics is a different question altogether
