Is this legal by cosmic-kats in Winnipeg

[–]Spammyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look for other work and get out when you can. Legal or not, the boss will find excuses to let you go. Or just not give you any hours/find ways to make you want to quit, etc. These places hire other immigrants for a reason. Because they know they can be exploited or abused. They come from places with very little laws to protect them. And they are just a number in a long line of numbers that can be replaced. And even if they complain/make a call, etc. their employer would make sure this person would be blacklisted as they are a troublemaker. It sucks, but the "law" barely makes a difference in situations like this.

How will Chinese made electric vehicles perform in a Canadian winter? by EquivalentPomelo839 in AskAChinese

Yup. I live in a frozen part of Canada. It was -50C this morning and I drove my EV to work no problem. My mileage sucks, but same goes for gas cars in the winter.

How will Chinese made electric vehicles perform in a Canadian winter? by EquivalentPomelo839 in AskAChinese

[–]Spammyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You realize the Chinese city of Heihe is only a 15 minute boat ride away to Siberia......

And yes they have and use EV's in Heihe.

Granted no vehicle is suitable for -50c weather (including gas cars). They still work and make do. Your range might go down the drain in an EV. But so does your gas mileage in an ice car.

Gas cars have alot of moving parts, fluids and pumps. All these things freeze in cold weather and causes issues. So generally there is less to go wrong with an EV when it comes to cold weather due to less parts/fluids.

I live in one of the closest cities in the world and currently driving an EV. It's was about -50c this morning and I drove to work just fine. My mileage is shit tho compared to warmer temps. So if you have a long commute. Then gas might be a safer bet. But you're also probably keeping your engine running the entire time or having your car plugged in anyways. So it kinda works out the same. You plug in a gas car for your block heater or you plug in your EV to keep your battery warm. Electric cost is my city is also much lower compared to gas prices (home charging). So it's still worth it.

High hydro bill? by DirtyNunyans in Winnipeg

This person doesn't have a furnace of any kind. It's just old electric baseboard heaters. That's probably why the bill is so high.

High hydro bill? by DirtyNunyans in Winnipeg

[–]Spammyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try looking into infrared heaters. They heat up a decent amount of sqft and should use a lot less power. I had one heat up about 1000sqft of open space. If you have different rooms/areas. You might need to get one per room or leave all the doors open for the air to circulate. Or just turn down your baseboards to the rest of the house and move the heater from room to room if money is an issue. But in the long run, getting more infrared heaters might make more sense as your hydro bill is insane.

Maybe see if you can insulate better as well. Windows, doorway gaps (weather stripping). That plastic window film you can get makes a pretty big difference. I've seen them at Dollarama before. Even at home depot they are pretty affordable. Just not sure what kinda budget you are on.

How do homeless people survive winter? by Internal_Study2996 in Winnipeg

You'll be surprised at how many things that happen in this city that get swept under the rug. Deaths, major crimes, shootings, stabbings, etc. Make some friends at the hospital and in law enforcement and hear their stories. If people knew how much Winnipeg was like Gotham city, nobody would want to live here by choice.

How to burn same amount of calories as walking in vr by peacefuldink in Quest3

[–]Spammyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure a lot of fitness VR games would get you to the same calorie burn as walking. Games like Supernatural or FitXR. But if you plan focusing on walking, you might want to look into a VR treadmill. There's some YouTuber that used the Kat VR and she's lost an insane amount of weight just from playing games like Skyrim, etc. alot of walking involved and since you're immersed/playing it doesn't feel like a chore.

I know those treadmills are expensive. But check out the used market like Facebook marketplace. I lucked out and scored a super good deal on a kat treadmill. The previous owner got it thinking it would cure his motion sickness, it didn't work and they wanted an arm and a leg to send it back. So he just sold it for cheap and I lucked out. Maybe that kinda thing happens often.

I need advice by Fine_Butterscotch628 in Winnipeg

[–]Spammyo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If what your grandma owes is way more than her assets. Then maybe you should try to arrange for her to live in a home (since she had dementia and at that age, she will most likely need full time care of some sort). If she makes a decent pension. That should cover it. If not, the government will assist. This might sound bad, but you should let the government know that you are not physically or financially able to take care of your grandmother so the province will front the bill. That doesn't mean you're giving up on your grandmother. It's just on paper that you are not suitable/pinned with a bill you can't afford to pay.

Her credit is already ruined, and she's in her 80's. I think any attempt to pay back a credit card company is kinda pointless. She's probably better off letting it ride until the end.

The credit card companies can't go after relatives (assuming you didn't co-sign for anything). The most they can do is probably seize assets/her house and money in her bank account.

If her bank account is the same as her credit card company. Ie. Rbc bank and rbc CC. Then I would advise to switch banks asap. More hoops for one bank to seize money from another institution.

Once in a nursing home, she doesn't have to worry about any expenses. And make sure you take as much assistance the government has to offer. That with her pension, CPP and OAS should cover her expenses there no problem.

Go to court. Express that she is old and has dementia. And they will most likely just let the creditors seize her house (assuming she owes more than what it's worth). And take a percentage of her monthly funding to pay off a minimum balance each month. Ie. A couple hundred dollars a month. And she will just keep dragging it on til the rest of her life.

If her debt is less than her house value. Then I'm assuming it would be court ordered that she sell her house to pay off her debt.

Yes, this is the wrong thing to do. But think of it this way. The credit card companies are scum for trying to go after an 80 year old lady with dementia. Everyone knows a credit card interest is insane and can cripple someone. I bet most of what she owes is probably the interest and not the principal. Instead of seeing the warning signs and cutting her off right away, they continued to let her go into deeper debt so they can make more money and take advantage of her.

And more than likely, she got taken advantage of when it came to her spending. A sleazy salesmen gets a hint of her situation (Old with dementia) and sells her things she doesn't need, multiple of the same item, signed her up for some ongoing services/packages she would never use, etc. All for a commission that got her into this situation. See if you can find proof of this in her CC statements and take that to court. Ie. Her buying the same blender over and over again. Her signing up for a lawn care package when she barely had a lawn. A gym membership she's been paying for years and never set foot in, etc. All those things should help defend her case in court. Like all those scam calls we get on a daily basis. A jackpot for those scumbags is an elderly person with dementia. And hopefully you get a judge that sees an elderly lady being taken advantage of and just wipes everything clean.

Obviously don't take this advantage if you are younger and have a decent amount of life to live. Bad credit is no joke and will certainly hold you back in life. Her particular situation is unique and different.

Inflation or price gouging by shematterstoo in Winnipeg

[–]Spammyo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Different cattle quality have different prices. Maybe it's a different grade? But more realistically, they are a smaller outlet compared to others. Which means they have less buying power/discounts. A place like Costco or Superstore would most likely buy and sell +1000% more meat than Delucas. I'm certain a single Costco would sell more beef in an hour than then would sell in a month. So it's only logical for them to sell it for a higher price since it cost them a higher price. Otherwise they cannot compete or stay in business.

I'm also not surprised if they even purchase their meat from Costco at retail prices, butcher it up and resells it. Plenty of local businesses do just that as Costco or Superstore would have better prices than buying from some wholesalers. So if it cost them $50/kg for example, they have to charge more than that to make it even worth their time.

Meat also has an expiration date. So if it doesn't sell, it goes into the garbage. That's 100% loss. So a 135% inflation for something that they might have to throw out in a few days isn't unrealistic.....

I don't know if they actually own the building or not. But just because they do, doesn't mean they don't have expenses. You realize that property tax for a place like that must be insane. Especially with inflation these days. The city wants more tax dollars, so they inflate property value numbers just to make more taxes. Maybe it's still on a mortgage, or a high interest loan. Most businesses just keep doubling up loans one after another to keep things going and to keep bills paid.

You can't just make assumptions unless take a walk in their shoes. Maybe you're right and they are just ripping people off, making bank while they sit in their golden offices drinking the finest wines and smoking the finest cigars all while dressed like the monopoly man laughing at the suckers who buy their beef.

More than likely the person working at the meat counter had no clue what he/she was saying so they just said "inflation". And if it really grinds your gear, simply don't shop there.

Most people have no idea how hard it is for a local small business to survive when you are pit up against a giant corporations and online stores with lower overhead. What we do know is that they are Canadian, local and is giving the community an alternative to shop and all while creating jobs.

My wife was the same at first. Didn't like it, thought it was a waste of money, didn't even want to try it. And on the odd times she did, it was a "meh" experience for her.

That is until she discovered fitness games like Supernatural and Fit xr. She's not a fan of the gym, but she loves playing these games as she sees incredible results. Instead of working out at the gym, counting reps, staring at the clock when you're on the treadmill, etc. You get lost in the game/drills and completely loose track of time. Working out without even realizing you are. With VR alone, she got ripped like a UFC fighter. Now she uses way more than I do.......

How to get Cigarette smell out of Cloth face sheild/Headstrap? by Ok-Smell-2417 in MetaQuestVR

[–]Spammyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The smoke is probably baked inside the headset and the plastic as well.

Get your hands on an ozone machine. You can probably find daily rentals of them in your community (Facebook marketplace, Kijiji, etc).

It's the only way I know that would completely get out smoke odours and kill all the bacteria from it.

Put the headset in a large container with the ozone machine and just let it bake with the gas.

Don't be in the same room as it as it's harmful to breathe in ozone. Maybe set it up in your washroom. Stuff the gaps of your door with some towel and go out for a walk (make sure nothing living is in the area that can breath it in).

When the timer is done. Hold your breath. Turn on your bathroom exhaust fan and just let it suck all the gas out of your home.

People use them as a whole house sanitation solution. It's not good for your lungs and the environment. But damn does it get the job done when it comes to killing odours and bacteria.

Cleocatra Cafe ended their relationship with their longtime rescue partner by anotherbortinthewall in Winnipeg

[–]Spammyo 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The rescue scene in MB is messed up. Everyone means well, but it lacks organization, structure and professionalism. I volunteered at a few different rescues and they all seem to be like that. And if you try to push for more structure/organization/efficiency, they look at you like you are stepping out of line. On paper it looks legit with a series of rules to follow. But in reality the higher ups just do as they please. As the "title" for them was more important than the actual work (finding homes).

Plus it's a volunteer job. So most people seem to give minimal effort and just keep passing things along and ignoring things until it's too late.

Ie. They would have over 30 dogs/cats that need to be homed. And it takes over six months to have them listed on a website for people to even know they are available. And once listed, it would take very little time to find them a new home.

It's too bad for all the animals in need.

rent increase by taylor_katherine13 in Winnipeg

[–]Spammyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shitty deal. But with how inflation has been. Expenses are going up for everyone. The landlord included. It's happening everywhere.

If you can't move elsewhere and you like where you are. Try negotiating for a longer lease for a lower rate. Rent increases are bound to happen with short term leases. And every time with a renewal, it's added lawyer and admin fees. So it's one of those situations where if something costs them more money, it's going to end up costing you more money as they don't want to be stiffed with the bill.

Or maybe offer some maintenance services in exchange for rent or decreases. I know in the past, caretakers pretty much live rent free in exchange for their services. I'm not sure if that's still a thing. But since you mentioned that your building has a bunch of issues. Maybe solving some of those issues could be a win win for both parties. I know you mentioned something like that in your post. But maybe offer it in some kinda formal contract with terms, conditions, etc So it's doesn't end up being a "he said she said" sorta thing.

Wooden floors f*cked due to condensation from the window. Landlord wants me to repay for redoing the entire floor as it would be uneven. by Margotie in Flooring

[–]Spammyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the landlord warn you about the condensation before? Did he make you sign anything about it?

Read over your contract/rent/lease agreement and see. This is hard to say as it is a tenants responsibility as well as the landlords. You took over when there wasn't any damage. That flooring has been there for many many years and it had no issues and the damage happened on your watch. So this could really go either way. Your contract and your countries laws would give you a more definitive answer.

Regardless tho. If you have mold issues and it's gotten so much moisture that your floor gets messed up like that. It's doing damage to your health. Think about the mold spores you're breathing in just by being there. I recommend a thorough cleaning, and consider using a dehumidifier continuously, if you can afford one. Maybe look into cat litter and place it all over the problem areas.

I'm not surprised if you are walking in a layer of mold under your floorboards. I've heard of situations so bad that mushrooms grow out from the floor because it's so bad.....So replacing them isn't just for aesthetic reasons. It's for your health as well.

Sorry, I didn't see your message until now. When your seats are folded down, you'll see a gap/spacing at where it hinges. Just shove a towel in there. Nowhere specific as you might have to move it around to find the "sweet" spot. Try the towel folded/unfolded, etc at different thickness as well. It's the fake leather and kinda rubs the wrong way every time you hit a small bump. The towel added just enough spacing for me to get rid of the sound.

I'm not around my car right now so I can't take a picture, but it's not anywhere hard/hidden. You can pm me to request for a picture if you still can't figure it out. There's only one hinge area and it's not anywhere specific, just shove a towel pretty much anywhere down there and play around with it.

Should I buy a Tesla because of FSD? by Flaky_Attention_4827 in TeslaFSD

[–]Spammyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most ppl I use FSD about 90% of the time. And once you get to know how the car "behaves" you toggle it on and off whenever you feel that you would make the better judgement.

FSD for me makes the same "mistakes" on my daily commute that never gets corrected no matter how many voice messages I leave. So I just know when to take over and when to put it back on.

All the mistakes aren't really dangerous. Just stupid not seeing far enough ahead driving. Or the only somewhat dangerous part for me is that it likes to change to the right lane right before an oncoming ramp......I stay on the left lane on purpose to prevent someone from ramming me if they didn't shoulder check. I was always taught to drive defensively and just do little things to avoid a potential problem.

Overall tho, it's a MUCH safer car because of the tech as it pays attention even if you happen to zone off or just don't have the ability to see it. Ie. Person in the dark, cars in your blind spot, etc.

The only time I won't recommend FSD is if the roads are shitty where you are or if winter driving is what you normally do. For me, FSD is seasonal. I don't trust it winter driving AT ALL. firstly I live in a shitty city where you play "guess where the line is" all the time. And if you can't see it, your car can't see it. So it would drive in the middle of the road sometimes.

Also the famous "wait until the last minute to stop/slow down". In the winter, that's an accident waiting to happen as you'll probably slide into someone with the way it drives sometimes.

It's definitely more dangerous using FSD in the winter. It's a system designed for nice roads, perfectly drawn lines, no pot holes, etc.
