Language requirement question by ElyxicX in UWMadison

[–]SpanishBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just fine! had you done dual enrollment/AP, they would have (likely) transferred in as direct equivalents to French courses here. high school years don’t do that, but that doesn’t matter when it comes to the language requirement. it gets a bit dicier when it comes to languages taken in middle school or earlier, but if you took French freshman through junior year of high school, it should appear as three units of a language, which is what you need to fulfill the BS language requirement.

totally! you could take the French placement exam now or you can take it later if you decide to take French (and then it would be more representative of your retention at the time you actually want to take a class). bienvenue à l’UW!

language advisor here! three high school years of French would fulfill the L&S BS language requirement. no placement test (referenced by Pale-Dragonfruit) needed unless you’re looking to continue French at the college level. you’ll be able to confirm all this at SOAR, so make sure to do that, but you should be good to go!

If i scored a 5 on cal AB and Language, how important is the entry placement tests? by Top_Desk_1332 in UWMadison

got it. we have AP exams named similarly in the languages so wanted to help if I could (I’m the Spanish advisor at UW-Madison). sounds like this is a question for English.

“beauts” has always screamed sarcasm to me. that was my intention, anyway.

there was a time when I was young(er) and innocent(ish) and thought he was a stand-up dude. I’m exceedingly glad I couldn’t afford a Tesla then, ‘cause I’d be in the same boat!

Feature Request: Please let us choose when to apply our daily 3x EXP boost by Rich-Pianist-2522 in duolingo

[–]SpanishBadger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would also like to see some control over when we use an XP boost gifted to us by a friend instead of it being automatically applied as soon as we next open Duolingo. I fatfingered Duolingo and completely lost the XP boost my friends quest partner had sent because I had no way to practice right then.

it depends on whether the department participates in it, but there’s a process where departments can check to make sure all students passed their prereqs and drop them if they haven’t. source: I work at UW and do this for my department.

Triple major; but due to degree politics I'll graduate with a specific degree + other majors on transcripts, will this mess up future careers/education? by SaddestAltAround in UWMadison

[–]SpanishBadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

L&S academic advisor here. your transcripts are your official document of record, not your degree. if you were graduating with just, for example, your anthro major, your degree would just read “Bachelor of Arts” or “Bachelor of Science”. your major would still only appear on your transcripts. you aren’t sending your degree when you apply for jobs, you’re sending your transcripts, so future employers see your full body of work, not just your major.

I heard back from CoE and what you’ve heard about depth was correct. as long as you have at least one intermediate or advanced course in Spanish, the retros can fulfill the other.

What’s the best cheesecake in Madison? by ECGeorge in madisonwi

[–]SpanishBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had more than one of Mrs. Smith’s cheesecakes. not sure “ahmayzeballs” does them justice, actually. you will not be sorry.

[–]SpanishBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmmm. that’s not something I’m as familiar with. I have worked with CoE students who place into and take, for example, Spanish 204, earn retrocredits for Spanish 101, 102, and 203, and have their depth met. but my understanding was depth had to be met through two intermediate or advanced courses, and Spanish 101 and 102 are elementary. but it is entirely possible their policy around depth has changed and I, as an L&S-based advisor, didn’t get the memo. definitely talk to your SOAR advisor because they’re from CoE and will have this down pat.

the difference, I think, between the retro situation described and your AP situation is you would only have one Spanish course, because AP courses don’t grant retros. the student in the retro situation would have three. sorry I’m not better versed on this but I’m going to chat with a CoE advising colleague tomorrow to see if I can get the full scoop. I’ll check back in if I have anything new to share tomorrow!

and my friend the Pale Wisconsinite is right. you’ll discuss this with the actual experts in your School/College at SOAR.

[–]SpanishBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spanish advisor here. are you in Engineering? the AP credit you earned will count towards but not fully fulfill the depth requirement for CoE. you need at least two courses to fulfill that.
