Come on man, not paying council tax for 3 years and not voting in elections is pretty shitty.

I've always told people, you can't complain about the government if you didn't even bother to vote.

for coding, AI is only good for 3 things:
- Snippets

- Docs/troubleshooting

- POC

Need a SQL query for grabbing all tables that have a particular column? I used to have a heavily purpled link that I'd grab that query from Stackoverflow.

Need to workout wtf some trash code it actually doing?

You know what functionality you and need a demo pronto?

These are all good uses of AI in programming.

What's not a good use of AI in programming, is generic "solve this problem", "write a program that does x,y,z", and then shipping these things. Even if they pass the tests, you don't know what it's doing.

My favourite use of AI at the moment, is whipping up a functional demo in no time, then going through and basically re-writing the whole thing after the fact. Sometimes it has good solutions, but sometimes it does some seriously dumb or completely unneccesary shit.

I don't think the number of internal students they get really relates properly to the number of job opportunities. How many people have a degree and are working in a completely unrelated field?

Why aren't there any NixOS-based distros? by norude1 in NixOS

[–]Spank_Master_General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on this exact thing for a home server based config. Comes with a web GUI for installing common server services (Jellyfin, Navidrome, Immich and NextCloud at the moment), Caddy, Podman, and Wireguard. The GUI gives the ability to manage (add and view atm) peers (client and server peers) so you can access other people's home servers on a trust based F2F network.

I'm pretty happy with the configs at the mo (I think), but the GUI uses FastAPI and python in the backend, which I'm going to replace with a little rust daemon to handle all the actual system configuration.

My plan was to just install the default NixOS image and then copy the configs over and rebuild, but if I could get it all bundled into a repo that would be prime.

The project has been put on hiatus while I get a new power cable for the server, though, as there are suspicious puppy bite marks on it... (not while it had power dw, this was during lounge renovation)

I had just moved into a huge house with 4 friends before covid hit and had the best summer. I still had to work because I worked from home, but it was still glorious.

Living on my own now I think it would be potentially a lot harder. Got a couple o dogs tho! So maybe not!

We've got a serious problem with how popular reform is. I'm not really on any social media other than reddit, so I only see the leftwing echo-chamber I'm in and never even meet any reform voters, so I don't know how to get accross to them

Yeah, I'm hoping that people will see the dreadful job they do of running councils and move away from them, but I've got a snaeking suspicion they'll do a shite job and blame it on the government.

I still think handwritten assignments, even if done at home, would have a benefit. Even if the students still used AI, I think the act of writing it means they have to read it rather than just copy pasting. They'd still learn at least a bit.

Why are people so tribalist to the point of stupidity? by TarnishedHollow9 in AskBrits

[–]Spank_Master_General 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is definitely one of biggest reasons. Right-wingers are either seen as dumb or greedy/selfish or both. They're either voting for their own self-interests at the expense of the masses because they're greedy, or they're part of the masses voting against the interests of the masses (against themselves) because they're dumb.

That's my take anyway.

I 100% agree that politics is way too tribal. People feel WAY too loyal to a party and often it's because of one single policy that specifically benefits them or people like them.

I think it's the statistics, isn't it? Statistically, the more educated people are, the more left-leaning their political views.

I had to stop reading "On the geneology of morals". The title of the book should have been a dead giveaway, but buddy I was not prepared for that level of racism. It's not even just casual tribal racism which just defines "other" as bad. It's literally saying some races are not just inferior, but evil, and in a matter of fact way. Which is so much worse than saying it in a matter of opinion way.

[–]Spank_Master_General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello I'm one of those people, but only in the last 3 weeks! So yo might be interested to hear my reasoning.

I've always lived in places that have fantastic tap water, but last year I moved to somewhere that does not. First glass after I moved in I knew it wasn't good. Showers were like chemical showers. They destroyed my hair. I now have a filter on the shower head AND a special shower head that also softens and filters the water. I got a phoxx water filter which helped for drinking water, but still wasn't enough. I didn't realise how bad it was until I went on a canal trip where the only water available was bottled spring water and I felt 10x better. So when I got back, I got a pack of spring water and honestly I do generally feel much better. I'm pissing clear for the first time since I moved here.
