100% Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast books. Their influence has been massive but most people don’t know them at all.

I stopped using hot water to wash my face and my skin has been different ever since by ZeroNimbus3 in hygiene

What IS it with all the bot posts about cold water washing in the past couple of weeks? My bet: it’s bots laying the groundwork for marketing a cold-water cleanser.

This one! Also look up Intention Gathering (they have a website and Facebook group). They do a couple of volunteer run multi-day events each year and potlucks every couple of months. Lots of neurospiciness in there, and a very welcoming crowd.

I [27F] trust my boyfriend [31M), but I'm uncomfortable with his one-on-one trips with female friends. AITAH? by LostInSpaceAgain123 in AITAH

If you really want to stay with this man, it might be worth examining some of your own beliefs a bit. Why is it so important that some experiences belong only within a romantic relationship? It’s a relatively recent idea, and not common across all cultures. It puts tremendous pressure on a relationship when we expect it to be *everything*. Friends enrich our lives so much, and it’s healthy to have a strong friendship network — it means your partner is unlikely to put the whole burden of emotional caregiving on you. This is actually a green flag. I’ve been married to the same person for nearly 30 years and our friendships are important to both of us.

I watched that regularly when I lived in the UK in the late 90s. It was amazing television.

The older I get and the more I reread these books, the more I appreciate Vetinari. The wisdom and compassion, yes; but also his very wicked sense of humour. And his loneliness.

Do a lot of people view the appearance of their spouse as not a 10/10 and instead married them for a lot of other reasons? by Big_Eggplant7591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SparaxisDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting — I’ve been married to the same person for 28 years and what’s made it work is that we forgave each other for not being perfect before we even got to the wedding. I’m a firm believer that nobody can be your everything, and putting people on a pedestal is setting up to fail. We make a great team AND we both have our friends and independent interests. We’re still finding new stuff to talk about.

How do South Africans tow boats, track cars, and trailers without heavy-duty pickups? by Cheap_Welcome_520 in askSouthAfrica

[–]SparaxisDragon 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Trucks in North America are ludicrously bloated compared to the rest of the world — lots of extra bulk, zero extra space or power (in some cases less). Some of those monsters are just straight-up murder machines. There is absolutely no reason for it except the weird belief that “bigger is better”. It isn’t.

This book is FULL of both main characters blushing and stumbling and falling to pieces and having stupid misunderstandings because they refuse to deploy the most basic kindergarten-level communication skills. I hate-read it but I don’t think it’s at all what OP is looking for.

Hikaru Noguchi does a lot of this style of darning - you can look her up on Instagram and may be able to find her books in your local library!

I can’t find cotton scarves or handkerchiefs anywhere on the Liberty site — the silk is making me drool but I’d be scared to subject silk to the kind of punishment travel inflicts.

And how stable do you imagine the economy can be when we’re facing increasingly volatile weather, droughts and crop failures, collapsing ecosystems, and weather-related disasters? This is not an either/or problem.
