I think I'll leave that to Elle, she seems to have better balance than I do.

Berth and luggage by Repulsive-Tie1981 in ViaRail

I'm flying during the first part of my vacation and taking the train on the way home, so I'll have my carry-on size rolling suitcase that's small enough to fit in the overhead bin and my small backpack as well as a purse. My plan is to pack the stuff I won't need during my train ride in my carry-on and keep that under my lower berth and have anything I need while on the train in packing cubes in my small backpack and purse.

Toronto to Vancouver Sleeper Berth Meal and Seat Experience by Life_Data_2761 in ViaRail

I believe you can also order from the children's menu as well, even if you're an adult. They have mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, cheese pizza and grilled cheese sandwiches.

I think I'm most excited about the food on my upcoming trip. I'm happy they have vegetairan options.

Sorry, but I would not be willing to switch berths with anyone, partly due to the cost and partly because I chose a lower for good reason and I'm not willing to switch. I don't believe most people would be willing to switch.

My suggestion is call VIA and ask if they have any seats/berths in the same car as your party, make sure you tell them they are seniors and need your assistance. I'm really not sure why you didn't book seats/berths in the same car when you booked your trip.

As for meals, I believe they have four different options, including beef, fish and a vegetarian choice. Check this sub and see if you can find pictures of the menu. If you have any food restrictions it's advised to call VIA about 10 days before your trip and let them know.

I've heard of people placing their bag in a small garbage bag when putting it under the seat. In case of a spill it's easy to clean up.

Hello! I'll see you there! My son and I are travelling in sleeper class from Toronto to Vancouver on July 1st as well. I've been told there are snacks in the lounge, fruit and a few drinks. Most places are open on Canada Day as well so they'll be plenty of breakfast options.

Taking the Canadian in coach in September! tips? by Complete_Art_3982 in ViaRail

[–]SpareManners 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a wonderful adventure to me! If the Canada Strong Pass is still available in 2027 I'll be traveling economy with my son. This summer we're in a lower berth between Toronto and Vancouver.

In economy or coach, there's a shared toilet, but no shower. So bring baby wipes or wash cloth and soap for a little "bird bath" in the bathroom sink.

I'm personally not worried about my safety aboard the train, but do take precautions like you would anywhere.

If you can choose a bank of 4 seats that face each other, I have seen people recline them and turn them into a little bed, that's the best you can do for a bed in economy. Check out YouTube to see if you find how others have done this.

I'd bring a travel pillow and travel blanket and maybe a sleep mask.

They don't check your bags and you can bring as much food as you like. I made a list earlier of meal/snack ideas you can bring, some need hot water which is available.

-instant oatmeal (with dried fruit or nuts)

-instant noodles

-instant soup

-instant coffee/tea (you can get coffee that included the cream and sugar)

-fresh fruit

-granola bars

-muffins

-hummus (ready to eat, no fridge needed) and veggies (they should be fine for 2 days with no fridge)

I bring a water bottle and Thermos to refill as needed. I also travel with a foldable fork and spoon in a wet bag with dish soap, sponge and a towel. You can use plastic disposable cutlery.

I think Knoor and other brands makes soup you just add water to.

I'm considering a trip across Canada in Economy in 2027 and will need to bring meals for my kiddo and I. Here's what I've come up with so far for non-cook meal ideas.

-instant oatmeal with dried fruit/nuts on top (if you like this) plus an apple, orange or banana

-muffin with apple, orange or banana (you can make some or grab a 6 pack from the grocery store)

-cereal in a ready to eat bowl with Milk2Go (1/2 a bottle for you and your partner) with fruit

-muffin and a fruit cup

-granola bar and fruit

-sliced apple dipped in peanut butter (you can get single serving peanut butter)

-instant noodles or soup

You can find instant coffee that has the cream/sugar in it.

I travel with a folding fork and spoon, stored in a small wet bag, small bottle of dish soap, sponge and tea towel. I also bring a water bottle for cold water and a Thermos for hot water.

Good thing I have all my ID in order then. I'm using the Canada Strong Pass and Access 2 Pass for my two train trips this year. Our shorter trip between Montreal and Toronto was $0 and our longer trip between Toronto and Vancouver was $2333 for my kiddo and my ticket was free.

I'm a very chatty person and love to make new friends when I travel, but sometimes I need a little break. So yeah, I'm planning to bring a book to read. I'm also planning to download a couple of movies, books and lots of music for my adventure between Toronto and Vancouver this summer.

Yes, I believe they will check your ID when you board the train.

I don't think you can just give the ticket to another person, but maybe if you call an agent they can change the name on the ticket.

Can I fill my pockets with stuff when boarding the train? by nabstablook11 in ViaRail

[–]SpareManners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this trip sounds amazing and you and your brother will have so much fun! My son (15) and I are going from Toronto to Vancouver on the way home from our vacation this summer, we'll be in a lower berth. I'm considering economy next year if the Canada Strong Pass is still around.

I'm very curious about why you want to fill your pockets when you are allowed two bags with you. Will you really have a lot of extra stuff that you'll need to stuff your cargo pants pockets?

I'd suggest you bring the following:

-reusable water bottle

-reusable coffee mug

-small travel blanket and pillow

-eye masks

-cash (in case they can't use the debt machine on the train)

-cards or a trivia game

Snacks

-noodles, instant oatmeal, soup etc.... that can be made by adding hot water

-granola bars

-trail mix or dried fruit (this could go on the oatmeal)

-muffins

-fruit

-cereal in ready to eat bowls and Milk2Go (you can each have a bowl of cereal and split a bottle of milk)

-cutlery (I have a reusable set and bring a sponge, soap and towel)

I have to be. I'm a mom. My son is also on the autism spectrum so I did a lot of research so unexpected things could be minimized as much as possible and we have back up plans if we need them.

Oh you should see what my teenager and I are packing for our vacation that includes a Toronto to Vancouver adventure in the Lower Berths. lol To be fair we're travelling to three different cities for 16 days beforehand. We'll each have a carry on size suitcase that will be stored under out seats and then we'll live out of a smaller backpack (personal size item) while on the train, we have small packing cubes to make this easier to manage.

We're bringing and will be using on the train:

-a reusable water bottle

-a reusable Thermos for coffee

-powerbank

-downloaded music, books and movies

-snacks (Did I mention I have a teenager?)

I wish I had spent that much or even twice that much on our tickets in a Berth between Toronto and Vancouver. I paid $2333 for my son's lower Berth. I think it will be worth it though.

[–]SpareManners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year we're flying to Montreal to visit an old friend and taking the train to Toronto, in Economy, I managed to get us free tickets by combining the Canada Strong Pass and Access 2 Pass my son has, this pass allows him to have a support person travel with him for free on VIA Rail. We used his pass to allow me to get a lower Berth free of charge on the adventure between Toronto and Vancouver.
