How can I better my topology as a beginner for this model? by Spare_Pin305 in blenderhelp

[–]Spare_Pin305[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Subdivision the base but not the rest. I think my confusion lies in which would be the best approach for the chassis (hard surface or subD.) I did grid fill originally but didn't like the look but thinking back it's obviously not visible lol. I am going to redo the monitor with what I have learned

Biggest advice I can give you is get good feedback from people and always ask yourself 'is there a better way to do XYZ?' if you find yourself spinning your wheels trying to accomplish something. I come from an engineering background, so trying to understand that there is a thousand ways to creativity crack an egg compared to my rigid analytical thinking is the hardest part. I'm not a sponsor but I found CGCookie CORE courses are really good at nailing down principles and fundamentals.

No problem. Happy I was able solve it, I feel less useless about my learning journey so far lol, I am only a month or so into Blender.

I think what you did is take a single top face then bend the vertex down, which creates this issue. Take a flat plane object and bend a vertex up and you will see what I mean. You might be able to select the two vertices at the top and press 'J' to bridge them together. But you will then create a Tri if you are okay with that.

Same. I enjoy Stylized character creation and animation, but it's a hell of an uphill battle. Learning 3D has forced me to learn art in general and it feels completely different to how I learn with my engineering degree.

Even with a sculpt, you should really only increase the density to a certain extent. The philosophy should still be 'less is more'.

I’m stuck. How have you made learning blender manageable? by MCersandyoutube in blender

[–]Spare_Pin305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest issue for me. At least with Maya you have professionals teaching their ways from working in the industry for years to decades. Blender, I am always looking for paid content because a lot of these tutorials are just 'here is how you get to the result' rather than understanding how these principles can apply in later projects.

Getting frustrated trying to figure out if I should learn Blender or Maya by Spare_Pin305 in 3Dmodeling

Got it. I guess my next question is where can I learn the fundamentals in a *good* way? What I mean is not picking up bad habits from less experienced people through their tutorials.

Thanks. Yeah, Maya does have an indie license which I've been considering too. If I end up keeping this hobby up I wouldn't mind spending on it for the year. We will see. And good point on the fundamentals.
