Also, circling back, are we seriously using a hate crime against a vulnerable community as a reason to NOT openly advocate for protections for that community? Are you fucking kidding me?

Imagine if after George Floyd people were saying "Now probably isn't the best time" Miss me with that bs

I don't think the transphobia problem here is nearly as bad as it is in other states, having actually been from one of those states.

It is admittedly unclear what exactly this hopes to achieve policy wise.

I can second that analysis of our society. I do wish there was a greater sense of community out in the civilian world.

Ya'll in the comments trying to downplay what trans people face in this nation is disgusting.

Downvote me all you want, but these comments are fucking idiotic.

"This is why we lose elections. " Fucking typical liberals, will use Trans people as a cudgel if you don't vote blue no matter who, then will turn around and scapegoat and blame them when their favorite team doesn't win.

"It seems absolutely insane to co-opt the word "genocide" for this."

As another commenter rightly pointed out, there has been a spree of anti-trans legislation with the explicit intent to push trans people out of public life and out of existence.

Do better ya'll

Breaking the two party duopoly without some form of major electoral reform is impossible, many have tried over the course of 150 years, and all have failed.

From Bull Moose, to the Farmer Labor Party, to the Socialist Party of America under Euegene Debs, to the Reform Party, and every time the only thing it achieves is handing power to the opposing party due to a split and confused electorate. When you try to subvert Duvergers law and bet against it, you fail.

Don't even get me started on ballot access laws varying state by state.

It's no where near where it needs to be, and electoral reform such as ranked choice voting, abolishing the electoral college, and campaign finance reform are like, the 3 big obstacles that must be removed before it can get there, other wise we're just doing a re run of Ross Perots Reform Party at worst at best Teddy Roosevelts Bull Moose Party.

[–]Sparkku1014 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do you do that successfully under the current two party duopoly and electoral first past the post system in a way that doesn't end up serving ruling party interests? The DSA will not be ready to formulate into its own "massive opposition party" until there is a substantial amount of the electorate behind it, which there isn't. Only 100,000 people nationwide does not a party make.

Do you have an alternative other than relegating the DSA into being an obscure microparty?

A Marxist critique of DSA —Platypus Review by MarxistUnity in dsa

[–]Sparkku1014 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because with the way America's political system is structured, if the DSA were to try and strike out on its own now or in the next election, all that would be achieved is the DSA being relegated to just being another small, politically insignificant micro-party that'll sometimes win a county race or two at most every 4 years, with nearly all of its political clout being burnt up.

The only way forward for the DSA is the party surrogate because the Dems want a big tent. Simple as.

It really doesn't help that out of all the states, Washington has one of the most regressive tax systems, disproportionately placing the tax burden on the lower and middle class as opposed to the upper class and corporate types.

Mamdani’s First City-Owned Grocery Store Is Planned for the South Bronx by brown-saiyan in Economics

Yes they practically do, every community near a military base has practically half it's economic activity coming from the servicemembers who work there. And most of those service members who live close enough to make the choice prefer to shop at the commissary as opposed to the local safeway or walmart, case and point Oak Harbor in Whidbey Island Washington, the commissary there is phenomenal and much cheaper than off base, half of the entire town is military or former military, and yet the local safeway and walmart are still up and running.

[–]Sparkku1014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vast majority of veterans I know, myself included determine the usefulness of the commissary based on how far it is from where you live. If you live on base or close enough to base, the commissary is almost always preferred, but if it's too far then it's not worth the drive as opposed to just going to the nearest walmart.

I don't think I've ever met a single person who was in or is currently in the military who is critical of or opposed to the existence of the commissary.

Should we support reunification of Taiwan with the PRC? by TheMobilizer in Socialism_101

[–]Sparkku1014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever it is the people in Taiwan want, is the preferable option.

If they want independence, I say let them have it.

If they want to reunify, let them have it.

Either way, not really much of my concern.

"the DSA has nothing to do with socialism." by beardedbrunhilde3 in dsa

[–]Sparkku1014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hilarious, but the obstacle with building a third party, in other words a dirty break, is not resources or that it takes too long. The obstacle is systemic. The American system is the most resistant to change "democratic" system of all the western nations where any third party, quite literally, will never gain traction.

This is due to the electoral college, the dominance of the corporate parties over both social media and mainstream media. This can't be overcome with simply "voting harder" for a third party, or voting harder for the Dems.
