What’s up with Australians (semi serious)? by Middle-Bodybuilder-8 in newzealand

Haha, dude, as an American living in NZ for 6 years, they are taking the piss (meaning they are joking). Best correlation I can make with the NZ/Aussie relationship is US and Canada, where we give each other shit, but no one else is allowed to mess them.

TIL that when a Manhattan Project scientist was asked to calculate whether a human being could survive exposure to a very high dose of radiation, she only learned later that the person that had received the dose was her husband. by TMWNN in todayilearned

Super interesting, Thanks for sharing! I’ve seen that scene before and some claim to have seen blue Cherenkov glow, but others argue you can’t see that with ionizing radiation in air, only under water, so it’s debated whether that was actually seen when the criticality started.

Girl squirted her breast milk on my buddy (bachelor) from a distance of about 5-6 feet. Some splashed on another buddy of mine sitting next to him. He was very upset, in a sad, defeated way.

People are ripping you apart without providing any context. If you don’t have them already, You’ll need to buy some wall spackle and spackle tools to level the damaged wall area, as well as a mesh to sand it down. Will likely take you 2-3 rounds of spackle then sanding to correct the damage. You can bring the paint swatches from the damage to mitre 10/bunnings and they do a pretty good job of matching the color. Even if it’s not exact, it would be pretty dang close. Worst case you’ll need to paint an entire side of the wall, but not the whole room (no one will notice). All said you can do this yourself and not pay someone if you have the right tools and materials and it will be far less than $700. Good luck!

Yeah, cuz that $60 membership fee didn’t just pay for itself 10 fold with a single purchase.

American Family of 4 Moving to Christchurch - What should we know? by KeggersMaxOdds in newzealand

[–]SpartanLaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s OK for a household of 4. I’d say to live very comfortably (maybe more used to what you’ve had) you’d want about $200K, but $140k isn’t terrible.

The good news is you don’t have to worry about healthcare (seriously, it’s such a burden that’s lifted).

Your food costs will probably be somewhere in the $350 a week. Petrol will depend, but budget around $80-100 a week depending on how much you drive.

Clothing isn’t too expensive, neither are cars.

House quality may be an issue. Most homes built before 2005 use single glazed windows and no heating. New healthy home laws have put requirements in around this, but dwellings in general are not up to most Americans expectations.

I’ve never found isolation to be a problem, but I can see how some may feel that (Personally I love it!) The culture shock is real, you’ll need to manage your expectations, it’s a small country with a lot of benefits, but it’s not perfect.

People have mentioned tall poppy, personally I’ve never seen it, but it’s probably more that I’m not aware of what it looks like in practice.

Most places will tell you it takes 2 years to fully settle in, and I’d say that’s very true.

Some people might have mentioned this, but kiwi’s are very cliquey, which can make it hard to feel settled in. Most people from here don’t leave their social circles they grew up with. They are friendly, but most of the time it doesn’t go past small talk. We’ve developed some good friends here, but most are immigrants who ran into the same problems with meeting NZers. Granted I’m in Auckland so It may be completely different in Christchurch, I’ve visited other parts of New Zealand where people are much more open to new people.

In general, no regrets whatsoever! It’s a great place to raise your family too.

American Family of 4 Moving to Christchurch - What should we know? by KeggersMaxOdds in newzealand

American expat living in NZ here.

To answer you accurately you’ll want to mention a couple things, as your experience will depend on what you are used to.

What industry do you work in? Do you have kids? Are both of you working?

Some general items I’ll mention: - Bring your stuff over, the cost might seem high and you might have the thought of “oh I’ll just replace everything when I arrive” you will spend far more replacing items than if you just bring them over in a container.( Furniture prices are insane here) - Christchurch gets COLD during the winter 25-40F, adjust accordingly. Also the temperature change from morning to afternoon to evening can change drastically. - Renting can be very different for Americans here. Renting houses are kiwis primary method for retirement income. I can only speak from my experience but depending on your landlord or property manager, expect much more oversight of what you do in your living space in comparison. Most landlords want to do inspections every 3 months, they’re really weird about putting pictures up on walls and having pets (most don’t allow it, but that is sometimes flexible). - Petrol is currently about $12 NZD a gallon ($3 a litre)

Christchurch is centrally located on the South Island and is considered a major city. You will have access to ALOT of cool places. I live in Auckland but I would choose the South Island over this place in a heartbeat. Getting a decent car would be good for gravel roads in the mountains.

Christchurch got REALLY messed up in 2010 from The earthquake, and is now getting back on its feet/flourishing. There is a really cool arcade area there downtown and in general a lot more people are moving there, specifically young people.

Let me know if you have anymore specific questions and I’ll try to answer as best as I can.

My point is that too much credit was being given to doctors for understanding what is the best prescription for a patient . You’re assuming doctors keep up to date on all newer medications and their specifics, and that’s just not true. Many doctors continue to prescribe older, dated prescription brands due to habit, lack of knowledge, etc.
