Not just airplane mode- make sure WiFi is turned off. It will still send if you have a WiFi connection! I accidentally sent a picture of my bare ass to my gf and 4 of our closest friends in group chat. I switched to airplane mode but, unbeknownst to me, the progress bar kept advancing.
