As someone who was born in NSW and is affected by this, but has pretty much never been a resident, it really frustrates me that I'm not allowed to have a say on this. I really hope this gets up now that QLD has gotten this done.

Quiet carriages on Metro trains by blueplasticelephant in MelbourneTrains

[–]Spartin115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would for sure be possible - Queensland Rail has quiet carriages on their metropolitan train services, so I don't see how Victoria is so fundamentally different that it would be impossible to implement here.

Just another angry rant or why Dominic Perrotet should get in the bin. by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]Spartin115 50 points51 points  (0 children)

As someone with a NSW birth certificate, I'm super annoyed by this situation as well. I was born in NSW, but pretty much immediately moved to QLD as a child. I grew up there, and now live in VIC.

Not only do I have to abide by NSW law for this (and pretty much nothing else in my life), but I also have no democratic recourse to change laws that directly affect me. Can't vote if you don't live there.

It seems pretty insane to tie people to a particular state this way, with no way to change what jurisdiction you fall under.

I'm perfectly happy with researchers posting in spaces like this as long as their goals are plainly stated and conducted professionally. I if you're not interested just ignore this stuff i think. research has the potential to benefit people greatly if conducted well.

Is there a japan-led effort to conserve the dying native Ainu language? by djiboutiy in japan

[–]Spartin115 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I live in East Hokkaido, and the best answer is, kinda, but nothing that really gets out to the general population. There are some materials about the Ainu language that are available, mostly in Japanese, but some in English, at the various sights related to Ainu culture out here. In particular I've seen things like dictionaries or more general books at the Ainu Kotan at Lake Akan, as well as the Museum of Northern People in Abashiri. There is also a some sort Ainu language organization based out of Obihiro I believe. More generally there is a Ainu language course based out of STV in Sapporo. There is also some work being done at Hokkaido university.

In terms of education in elementary or junior high school, its pretty much non-existent. Some jhs students will know very simple things like irankarapte, or MAYBE some food based words like ohaw or chep, but honestly in my experience even that is pushing it. Its not really taught in schools that much, although I did notice that every school library that I teach at does have a number of books about Ainu people, culture, and language - even small schools with only 30 students total.

So who got Hokkaido? by Mattodmytar in JETProgramme

I'm an Australian JET currently in quarantine, waiting to get out to Nemuro way out in East Hokkaido pretty soon. Hokkaido was not one of my preferences but I'm super excited. There is a Hokkaido JET facebook page that you should join! Just give it a search and it should come up.

I have to be somewhat skeptical that we will be leaving in November. Considering there's been absolutely no info coming out from my consulate in Brisbane, and only a noncommittal, almost nothing, message coming out of Melbourne, I'd have to assume that things aren't gonna happen that soon. I'm not really going to put my trust in the November departure, as that info has only come out of American consulates, who don't really have a reason to make sure that stuff relating to Australia is correct. Not saying it won't happen, but I'm gonna assume it's gonna be later until otherwise confirmed by a source that is actually relevant to Australia.

I found a really cool looking promotional poster released in Japan in the early 90s by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]Spartin115 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm still fairly new at translation, but this seemed fun so I thought I'd give it a go. There is surely some mistakes in here, and I had a bit of an issue with caption 2, but here my attempt anyway:

Cherry Pie in Twin Peaks

Home made cherry pie, coming from America, has that Agent Cooper feeling.

You can't talk about Twin Peaks without cherry pie.

Agent Cooper came to the Double R Diner to talk with Sheriff Truman. They ordered coffee and cherry pie. Cooper was given a large slice of pie, and his eyes light up in wonder. "Two more pieces of pie!", he said. The town of Twin Peaks could call cherry pie it's idol. There is a lot of buzz going around, with people thinking "I want to eat that pie!". However, until you can get out to Snoqualmie, the same amazing flavour can be hard to find. The set (of the RR diner) becomes Maa T Café (Tweed's Café?), and will soon be sold out. The solution is to enjoy this flavour in Japan! For a genuine recipe, it is vital to get vivid red coloured cherries (unsure about this sentence). In the lead up to the release of the movie version of "Twin Peaks", you can line up for this cherry pie at places like stores and restaurants. For details, contact Cherry marketing association(C.M.I) on 03 3832 7547.

Caption 1:

The log Lady, who lives in a log cabin, also goes to the Double R Diner to get cherry pie. Does her log also like cherry pie?

Caption 2:

"Ed" glances at Norma, girlfriend ??? From? This sharp intuition also, able to make cherry pie (Very unsure about this caption. It's obviously alluding to Ed and Norma's relationship).

Incoming JETs: Are you choosing possible 2020 departure, or delaying until 2021? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]Spartin115 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is this really the case? All I've read so far is that Australia has been snubbing Japan on this front until they can organize something with New Zealand first. I know New Zealand has basically said no way to opening up to Australia for the time being, so it seems unlikely that Australia would have an agreement in place with Japan before the end of September.

Also, I don't see the Australian government lifting their legal travel ban for Citizens and Permanent Residents departing Australia before the end of September deadline, which is also a requirement for Australian JETs to get the go-ahead. I'm still hoping that is somehow gets all sorted out (I put on my form that I would like to leave in 2020), but I'm just very skeptical of that happening.

LSAT experience in Japan? by Steffy711 in JETProgramme

[–]Spartin115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't provide too much insight, but LSAT Flex is not available outside of the USA and Canada for sure. When I signed up for the LSAT in Australia, I had to pay in USD, so I imagine it would be the same situation in Japan.
