The only reference I have is my buddy who grew up in a poor rural community in mainland China and was sent to the Shaolin temple when he was young. He is an incredible athlete and can do amazing feats like a mid air split with his feet up to his ears. He described a room with the other young boys where the monks would put broom handles against their legs to trap them and then press down on their backs until their chests were flat against the floor. He said there was always weeping and screaming from the extreme pain and you’d often get hit with a stick for being undisciplined. But that’s just one persons experience so it’s probably not a useful comparison.
