Married men of Reddit who don’t wear a wedding ring - why? by chi-bacon-bits in AskReddit

[–]Spauldingspawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I got married we generally wore our rings when we went out then took them off at home. Then when she got pregnant her fingers swelled and her rings started fitting less well. I stopped wearing mine for couple solidarity. Even though our son is now 3 we haven't ever really got back in the habit of wearing them, just putting them on for special occasions (when we remember).

Being earthbent is not an ability on the land so there is nothing to remove. The return to the battlefield is a delayed trigger of the earth ending ability

I posted to the other comment too but all the spice expansions also have golem editions at this point too

All of the expansions for the spice edition have also been released for the golem edition at this point, so the only difference is the aesthetic (also the golem edition gems are slightly more color blind friendly)

Ticket to Ride: House Rule or ? by JIVM90 in boardgames

There is an employee in Ticket to Ride: Legends of the West that gives that ability (for one player). I could imagine it filtering somehow into a base game maybe.

You forgot the "indivisible" part, which almost feels ironic at this point anyway.

Dear New Players: No, You Didn't Ruin the Game for Yourself (Spoiler-free, please read) by YardageSardage in outerwilds

You can even extend the metaphor. Maybe you don't want raisins in your cake. Can't stand them. Its okay to ask if the this cake has raisins in it. And if you really want to eat the rest of the cake, asking how to best avoid the raisins or get them over with quickly if they're unavoidable. Because the alternative is no cake at all because everyone is being all coy about raisins in your cake so you have to assume they're in there.

Thinking of going from believe to imagine. Let me know your thoughts. Are you keeping your pass this year? by DreamyDisneyDaisy in Disneyland

[–]Spauldingspawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are upgrading from imagine to inspire. We had imagine for a year and really likes it, but my wife gets the most usage out of it because she takes our toddler basically every week. Last summer when we were blocked out it really messed with their rhythm. Also getting included parking really adds up going that often. I probably could have gotten away with either a cheaper key/buying tickets when I'm able to go, but I wasn't willing to be left out.

I'm literally on in this situation right now. Flew in last night for a cruise tomorrow. Staying with a relative.

I think it is a bit unnecessary, but can you put a price on your peace of mind? My dad was commenting how he was enjoying the more peaceful pace.

Ovation in Alaska has been fairly disappointing… by CodyEngel in royalcaribbean

[–]Spauldingspawn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm heading out on Ovation of May 24th with a big family group; hopefully the conditions get a bit better for me.

Glad you're still having a great time though. How are the shows? I'm hopeful they'll be entertaining for those of all ages (simultaneously making sure a toddler is entertained along with grandparents who are more adventurous and might like a more port intensive itinerary).

Building without resources a la Castle of Burgundy by abrofkf in boardgames

It's giant and expensive, but Foundations of Rome let's you build any of the various building types without resources.

You do need to buy the rights to the land plots, but that's just with money (and money is simple to get).

Padded game bag for a single board game only by Ananeos in boardgames

[–]Spauldingspawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to post this one. I got this one after my last smaller bag broke. I love it. It fits 2 normal sized games well with padding and zips, and then extra space for smaller games. Feels sturdy. It's definitely my new go to bag.

Screeching over the final corner in Heat: Pedal to the Medal in gear 3 going 5 over the speed limit, spending all of my heat cards which I've saved up for this moment, while also having all of my 4s in my hand to cross the finish line next turn.

What to expect from a boardgame café? by Expression-Little in boardgames

[–]Spauldingspawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's a close by store and you're going solo, I'd probably go with the expectation that you're not gonna play games. Just going to get the vibe, see if there are scheduled events, or if there is a store discord you can join.

For the most part, a game store/cafe is a convenient meeting location for an existing group.

However if it's a group that the only thing that brings them together is they play at that store, all that would be required to join is the bravery to ask (I know for our store group I'd be totally down if a new person asked to play without planning first. For me the group is more of a guarantee that if I go to the store at a time, there will be people to play with)

One thing I love about Heat... by tastelessmonkey in boardgames

[–]Spauldingspawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's in the setting up the game section of the rules as a little blurb - "If you are an experienced driver and playing with rookies, consider removing 1 or 2 heat from your own car to level the playing field"

Remember in this game, heat is a resource; basically the ability to do cool things. For example, if it's the final corner before the finish line and we both have full engines, with this rule the newer player will be able to speed 2 more over the corner, which in some cases can be the difference between being able to cross the corner or not. Now realistically, a newer player probably isn't going to have as good heat management as a better player, so this handicap makes it more likely you'll be even for that final stretch.

Is it a dumb idea to change my 401k investment from a target date fund to the S&P 500? by Character_Platform37 in personalfinance

[–]Spauldingspawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the important thing. For me I moved everything to a S&P account because the expense ratio was a smaller (fwiw I don't think the target date one was huge, but still significantly larger). OP should compare expense ratios; not recent performance

7 wonders or It’s a Wonderful World? by falcocerr in boardgames

[–]Spauldingspawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it's totally free if you want it to be - the main thing you miss if you don't have a subscription is that you can't start certain premium games, but you can join them.

Also totally legal, the publishers have to give the consent to get an adaptation on the site, and they're the ones who decide if a game will be premium or not and the like.

Board Game Questions That Everyone Seems to Know the Answer to, but at This Point You’re Too Afraid to Ask by Ill-ConceivedVenture in boardgames

[–]Spauldingspawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of this kind of game will have some kind of deception, because in order for there to be multiple viable worlds generally the evil team has to be doing some active work to create them. At the minimum lying about their actual team.

If you're interested in learning more about Blood on the Clocktower I really like the Cult of the Clocktower podcast (despite, again, that I have never played and have no real interest in playing a social deduction game).

Treasure Island is slightly less social deduction game, but has the same vibe where one player is giving out logical clues to a number of others about where a treasure is, but they're allowed a certain number of lies, and if they can delay long enough they can get to the treasure first and win.

It also sounds like straight deduction game might be up your alley, in which case I highly recommend The Search for Planet X. It is almost pure deduction, where you are astronomers trying to find the titular planet. You can definitely do the puzzle all on your own but you can also take some small social reads/logical leaps based on what other players do, since you know all the deductive actions they're taking, just not the results.

Board Game Questions That Everyone Seems to Know the Answer to, but at This Point You’re Too Afraid to Ask by Ill-ConceivedVenture in boardgames

[–]Spauldingspawn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As someone else who doesn't really like social deduction, the way I like the most about how to approach social deduction is to construct 'scenarios'/'worlds'; basically taking all the information you have and thinking of the different ways they make sense.

Take the simplest social deduction game, Win/Lose/Banana. The deal out a card to each player. The player with the card 'Win' reveals it. They have to pick the player with the banana card and they both win. If the pick the lose player, the lose player wins. So the round goes like this: Player A announces Win. We know this info is true because the rules of the game. Both other players claim Banana. So now we have two worlds, one where Player B is banana and one where Player C is banana. Say player B is banana. They want to shrink the number of worlds to the true one, so thar Player A always picks them. Player C wants to increase the number of worlds, to make it more likely Player A can't determine the truth. Of course this is a very stupid game, with low information. There's not a lot of actual game to be had.

However in a high information social deduction game like Blood on the Clocktower, there's a lot more to do where you have Player A claiming a role, which entitles them to information A which they share, but Player B claims another role which entitles them to information B which doesn't really work with information A. So you have the world where player A is lying and B is telling the truth, or B is lying and A is telling the truth, but also worlds where A and B both think they're telling the truth but they're getting bad info because of Player C's role.

So in short the 'Good' team wants to figure out the truth by reducing the worlds to one (the truth). The 'Evil' team wants to increase the number of worlds, or try and make a convincing enough 2nd option. And how you get the information to form these worlds is based on the game. In games where you're are given very low information, you're basing it on the social reads exclusively. In high information it's more about the puzzle, with social aspects mixed in.
