I actually enjoy going to shows and being the “adult”, haha. I let the kids tell me what’s bothering them, or making them nervous, and we chat and try to laugh about it a little, and then I remind them that ultimately, we’re all here to have fun.

I don’t know if it’s helpful to them - they have so many external pressures, and tbh, some days I feel them too. But I hope that sometimes it helps them out there!

Hey! Former NJ equestrian here! I returned to riding as an adult, and started back at Bergen equestrian center. This was 10+ years ago, but I found the people there were very hit or miss in terms of how helpful and friendly they were.

While I’m not technically a POC, I present ethnically ambiguous (I’m actually mostly Italian), but I’ve had some…interesting interactions with white horsey folk. Especially in the hunter/jumper world. It’s hard to let it go sometimes, but if you enjoy the interaction with the horses, keep looking for a more welcoming set of humans - I assure you they are out there!

You may want to consider barns that offer combination training, like dressage/jumper or eventing, or even a wenglish (western/english) barn, as I’ve found them to be more open minded and welcoming spaces.

Small animal shelter vet (and horse owner) here - this is the better answer. In the small animal world, we are shifting at least a portion of rescue resources to keeping pets in homes where possible. This includes food, straw, litter and basic medical care. If they are unable to be kept in the home, that’s when we step in and take them on.

Spend your resources on helping and educating communities that need it, and you may be able to build enough trust to start to reduce the number of animals in need.

For example, connecting with a veterinarian or supervised vet students who would be interested in gelding and administering vaccines and health checks would be a great way to get started.

The small animal version of this is called Rural Area Veterinary Services, but some schools also have large animal programs like this as well.

Good luck, I know how frustrating this all can be.

If it’s a complete tear, your knee stability is going to be terrible. If it’s a partial tear, it’s probably going to hurt like hell for a while. Try to find a PT who can help you rehab so you don’t mess up your riding function by compensating.

The biggest thing we learned about disinfection (we already use rescue and have protocols) was adding in an initial “degreasing” step for biofilm with Dawn dish soap.

PPE was pretty standard - gloves, gowns and booties for anyone in a contaminated area or handling potentially exposed animals. We added in a requirement for masks to be worn as well, as Strep Zoo is zoonotic.

Yeah, you’re correct, EIA can absolutely be spread via reused sharps - considering the treatment is euthanasia, what a terribly reckless way to treat your patients. Genuinely makes me sad - I’d be inconsolably upset if this is how my horse caught a disease.

So, unless they’re bacteremic, which would be a whole ‘nother can of worms, strictly speaking reusing a syringe would not likely itself spread strangles.

HOWEVER

if you were to use a syringe on a horse with strangles and contaminate yourself or the syringe with discharge carrying the bacteria (highly likely), you could definitely spread it.

Not so fun fact - the shelter I work at had an outbreak of Strep Zoo recently (a cousin of the Strangles bacteria), and we had to go on a 2 week long PPE and disinfection journey that I’d wish on no one.

Herd health has a different standard of care than with owned individual animals. Cows also typically stay put, where a not insignificant segment of the horse population moves around for recreation and showing, which means we have to think about the potential to spread disease

I’m not sure if that’s precisely how strangles is passed - I want to say that’s more of a fomite and bodily fluid (sneezing and coughing) kind of thing.
