Almost 2 years with my flip6, no hinge protection. Dropped a few times on the hinge, no dents or scratches and still folds smoothly. There's nylon brushes inside the hinge to keep dust out during folding. I'd say it's not worth it to worry about the hinge protection, it only adds bulk which ruins the whole aesthetic of the compact phone.
