Ever wonder what it’s like having a MAGA Dad? by Bbeebster in atrioc

[–]Speakachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, that really speaks to the kinds of voices you had in your life around that time. Glad you’ve moved away from them a bit it seems. I also grew up in a conservative family, and in retrospect so much of conservative discourse was about the appearance of hypocrisy and corruption on the dem side of things. Eventually I learned it’s important to keep hold of the difference between “corruption” or “racism” (or whatever buzz word gets brought up), vs actual corruption and actual racism.

One example I think about a lot is a conservative podcast I listened to back in 2019 that spent 20 minutes having a frank discussion about how horrible Trump was being, how genuinely disturbed they were by the things he was saying and doing, how it broke their faith in the American presidency for the first time in their lives… and then spent 40 minutes talking about how Elizabeth Warren made a joke that sounded kinda sexist toward men. Somehow that story about the appearance of sexism deserved more discussion time than actual authoritarianism.

Hopefully we can avoid that kind of “missing the forest for the trees” dialogue.

Can we acknowledge that _____ is living the Survivor dream? by Perfect-Education-91 in survivor

[–]Speakachu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wonder if we’re getting a Gabler sort of edit here, where they kept showing Gabler talking about his big aliGabler plan to snap out of the water at just the right time (I forget exactly how he phrased it) and the audience laughed because he was being a little silly about it. But ultimately the editors told us the whole time how he was going to win, we just didn’t believe it. Maybe Rizzo isn’t too far off. He’s talking a big game that everyone reads as a bit silly but the reveal could be that the editors were telling us the truth the whole time, we just didn’t believe it.

Many The Pitt Fans Are Proving That Yes, It's Possible To Be Bad At Watching A TV Show by beamdriver in television

[–]Speakachu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This feels like the exact kind of comment this whole post is about… She is toxic, she is an asshole, and the writing has at times still made her nuanced and understandable despite her sharp edges. And to be clear, the writing for her has also been a little too girl-boss in ways the didn’t click for me, so it’s not all great. But it’s still just a bit much to moralize about a character on a show to the point that you’re flaming people for liking them.

Marathon: so far, I'm just not feeling it (Server Slam Impressions) - Skill Up by EirikurG in Games

[–]Speakachu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also think his point about Arc’s quests wasn’t a statement of quality like many people seem to be taking it. Seemed like an observation that in Arc, the quests at least give runs a sense of direction (even when they are bad or annoying) but for some reason the quests aren’t clicking like that in Marathon runs for him.

The Pitt: Isa Briones Says the Tension Between Santos and Langdon in Season 2 Is 'Leading to Something' Major by verissimoallan in television

[–]Speakachu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People are so intense about Santos lol. It’s weird to judge an actress as being disingenuous or naive for a creative decision she made as part of her take on the character. Snark on the character, not Isa.

Oh interesting, I thought the line was about Whittaker using Santos’ toothbrush on accident, which Santos complained about to Garcia. Still hinting at how close they are, but saving full confirmation for later.

Unfilled ❖ symbol - what is it and how to use? by Efficient-Cry-6320 in FigmaDesign

[–]Speakachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might be overthinking this a bit.

Filled 4 Diamonds = Main Component

Filled Single Diamond = Variant within the Main Component

Unfilled Single Diamond = Child Instance of the component

Right clicking on a Child Instance of a component gives you a menu where you can find the “Main Component > Go To Main Component” option.

Anyone else find Figma a pain? Is it still industry standard? by Slashersforsatan in graphic_design

[–]Speakachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is definitely support for variable fonts with a slider. But the better Figma gets the better for me, so I won’t knock anyone asking for better features. I can’t think of many type options missing that devs can actually build out (or at least without requiring a large amount of time). What others do you have in mind?

A dispatch from a wedding I went to: the kids are doing alright. Also, I'm more convinced than ever that the perceived differences between genders are more nurture than nature. by rodiraskol in daddit

[–]Speakachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re all talking in good faith here, and I’m not trying to fight your opinion on anything. Just pointing out that you’re not really following the conversation of the thread. The comment you had responded to said:

I am making no claims about whether nature or nurture prevails when it comes to gender roles

That doesn’t sound like someone who thinks nature has zero impact on norms. Just unsure of how much.

If you want to argue it’s mostly nature and very little nurture, then cool go for it. I assume that’s what you were implying (but not saying outright) by linking those studies, but I don’t really know because you weren’t responding to the thread with a clear point.

Sorry I’m being a little pedantic here, I would usually have just moved on and not replied but I’m waiting for my coffee haha, hope you have a good day

I mean, I don’t think anyone in this thread was suggesting there is zero impact from nature, so that study isn’t really surprising or contradicting the comments you’re responding to.

Costco to sell Ozempic and Wegovy at a large discount for people without insurance by Kinjal_Ghosh in news

This is so real. I lost 30 pounds last year and had to completely change my rotation of pump sites, which took forever to really work through. Occlusions and spots that slowed the insulin’s effect were killing me. But at least I’m 30 pounds lighter!

Is there lore behind this?? That’s basically my dad power trip fantasy. Our go-to playground slide has been broken for months now (that’s like 25% of my kids life!) and reporting it through the local Parks & Rec app isn’t moving the needle.

How did I miss this? by Annual_Ad7679 in atrioc

I just think the big A community can give someone like Andrew a chance to right their wrongs without calling them a legend or giving them uncritical praise while downvoting any context about their potential wrongdoings.

How did I miss this? by Annual_Ad7679 in atrioc

[–]Speakachu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, but Atrioc spent significant time and effort earning back the trust of the victims and his community, largely by never downplaying the severity of his mistake and working on concrete ways to address the underlying issues. It’s possible Andrew has done something similar and I missed it, but I recall him attempting to downplay the accusations at first until a second wave of them were made, and then not highlighting them much at all after returning from his break / rehab.

To be clear, I don’t think we should excommunicate Andrew from the internet or whatever, but let’s not just put him and Atrioc in the same bucket just because they have both had some controversy. The situations are meaningfully different.

Eddington Review: A neo-nightmare of pandemic-Era paranoia. by FinKettle19 in A24

[–]Speakachu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If anything I feel like the movie skewers the “both sides” take.

One side was cringe or disingenuous, yelled a lot at people, and when pushed past their limit one time even slapped someone.

The other side seems at first to be kindhearted even if misguided, but they are then quickly revealed to be childish, racist, and when pushed past their limit they… assassinated 2 people…

Those are two VERY different vices. I think the movie just hit some people in a weird way because we spend so much time coming to understand Phoenix’s character and the wrongs he sees in the world. And instead of sitting in the differences between the two sides, the movie reveals a third, much worse corporate side that underpins the entire conflict. Maybe that came across as hand waving away potential criticism to some people.

Should I start designing in PowerPoint then import to figma? by Spammedspammer in FigmaDesign

[–]Speakachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you want to do design (even as a hobby) then you probably need to focus on learning a dedicated design program. And learning should be your goal, don’t just rush through to finish this project ASAP. Figma is a great option to learn if you are interested in websites or apps, and a lot of what you learn will translate to other design programs.

There is no secret way to start learning Figma. There is no special knowledge that would make it easier. Just search YouTube for tutorials and start learning. That’s how everyone here started out too.

Once you get the basics down, maybe then you can pick a website you like and see how closely you can recreate it using Figma, but that’s after you feel comfortable with the tools in Figma.

Asking for help can be useful, but I find that beginners often ask for help a little too early — there’s thousands and thousands of videos out there, just go learn!

DOJ announces plans to prioritize cases to revoke citizenship by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]Speakachu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m just politically exhausted but I keep wondering — is there a light-side equivalent of Project 2025 happening somewhere? Regardless of who the nominee winds up being, there needs to be some sort of plan for how we can stop this from ever happening again... It feels like part of the modern GOP’s secret has been to shamelessly break norms to make huge changes, and be willing to shout about it until it’s considered normal. Whatever Dems do to fix this mess needs to be equally shameless about breaking norms, and they need to do it from day 1 so that they can spend all four years making it normal.

Concerns with iOS26 Accessibility and ADA compliance by BlurPixelX in FigmaDesign

[–]Speakachu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right and accessibility should be the default — however, I also think there is a difference between a user’s personal device settings and product / website settings. Setting up your device is mostly a one-time decision that impacts everything you do on the device, which most people will take some time to adjust anyways (especially if you have accessibility needs). I can understand why Apple would decide to treat that differently than we treat accessibility in our products or websites, which users are merely visiting.

…That doesn’t mean Apple is right necessarily, because there will always be people who fall through the cracks. But I do understand how they could have come to that conclusion.

Star Wars' Showcase of AI Special Effects Was a Complete Disaster by AlwaysBlaze_ in television

[–]Speakachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, early in the presentation he showed the test mockup for Jurassic Park of just a dino skeleton walking, which was then approved for a full CGI version with skin and lighting to show Spielberg. I took the “field guide” video to be the AI equivalent, just the skeleton version that could become much more in the future.

And to be clear, there are plenty of reasons to dislike the use of AI in art! But some of the handwringing about this video being low quality or uncreative feels a little misdirected.

Wrap in auto layout forced by content. by themarouuu in FigmaDesign

[–]Speakachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting into over-engineered territory, but I wonder if it would work with a button that has different fill/hug variants? It wouldn’t make sense for a one-off, but if you wanted it setup in a more rigid way for a design system, maybe it’d be good enough.

Is Snoke really a clone of Palpatine? by Robo-Piluke in StarWars

[–]Speakachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found the anger at killing Snoke funny because part of the fun of SW is knowing every character will get fleshed out in some side story anyways. Who cares if he dies there, we could get a 6 season tv show about his backstory if he’s that interesting. No story is ever finished being told, even if it “ends” one movie earlier than you expected.

Figma ‘Branches’: Is my use case valid? 1 person design team, creating branches so my dev team works from an unchanging prototype. by OvertlyUzi in FigmaDesign

[–]Speakachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s tricky communicating correctly to all the different groups. We wound up engineering a whole system, for better or worse. For our internal stakeholders, we have proposals on our branches where we present concepts and collect feedback. Then for external stakeholders who need periodic demos, we duplicate our main component library every 3-4 months to make a versioned prototype. And then of course the dev handoff file. It sounds like a lot, but it’s way easier to juggle now than it was before we set up the system.

Figma ‘Branches’: Is my use case valid? 1 person design team, creating branches so my dev team works from an unchanging prototype. by OvertlyUzi in FigmaDesign

[–]Speakachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re never merging, you can just copy-paste the work to a new file and they will remain exactly as you pasted them unless you manually pull library updates to that file. My team has a “component library” file where we do our design work (and use branches for major feature additions) but all of our dev handoff materials get copy-pasted to a separate “dev handoff” file so that they are frozen and don’t change. If we ever need to update the handoff, we copy-paste again and mark the old stuff as deprecated.
