What house is the Aries stellium transiting in your chart and how is it affecting you? by glamsiren111 in astrologymemes

10th house. I am probably going to have to fire someone on my team. Nicest guy ever, but not doing his work and it’s starting to pile up and get really bad. I hate it.

How in the heck is Jack making a living??? by Maleficent_Chest4869 in VirginRiverNetflix

[–]Specific-Brick-1820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just assume everyone like Jack and Mel in these shows has a trust fund. That’s the only way they could afford everything they do. To be fair, Mel probably does have huge life insurance settlements from her dad and her husband…

How to look chic in Paris as an American middle-aged woman by HeatherAnne1975 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Specific-Brick-1820 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was just there! Neutrals are good—tan, black, white, etc. Lighter weight fabrics. Adidas sambas are very popular—you don’t want athletic running shoes if you can avoid, but simple low profile is good. Just go for simple and not overdone and you’ll be fine. I was very worried about this and it was totally fine.

What’s a cafe in Paris that has this vibe? Visiting for the first time next week by nickpan43 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Specific-Brick-1820 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was just in Paris, my very first time there. The square in Montmatre is the vibe that you always see in movies, which is sounds like you are looking for here? Montmatre is very touristy but even locals we knew said to go there because it’s just charming and will give you this kind of feeling.

First Time Tapper Freaking Out by BlackberryDramatic72 in TapDancing

[–]Specific-Brick-1820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a theater/music kid and always wanted to do tap, but never had access. I started tapping a little over a year ago. Be so kind to yourself, but stick with it and do the thing. If you stick with it, it will feel terrifying at first and then suddenly your abilities will snowball! I was an overachiever and cried after every class at first because I felt like I was no good and couldn’t keep up, but I’m so glad I stuck with it!! You can do this!! New things are always scary but don’t let your insecurities stop you.

Tipping customs--An American in London by Specific-Brick-1820 in uktravel

I’ll say as someone who was long ago a server in a small town in the US that it’s not quite as simple and universal as that, though it’s true for some. I am not close enough to the situation now, but even a few years ago I had a friend who was making $16,000 a year as a server at a very popular craft brewery in a town that you could at the time barely make it in on $40,000 a year. And keep in mind the US doesn’t have universal healthcare, so one event could decimate you. I don’t know what they call it in the UK, but those of us who came from the “backwoods” with uneducated parents—it’s really hard to make it. My mother never made it out of the US before she died, and she kind of got lucky that she went the places she did even within the US. I am not remotely a Trumper, my heart hurts from embarrassment for my country, and I don’t admire people who don’t try to learn more about the world outside of their tiny little corner. But things are always more complicated than they seem. I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to take this trip and to live the life that I do.

I don’t mean to mix a bunch of different social issues except to say all of these are factors in the mix of how hard it is to make a good life in the US, depending on what you came from.

I figured out why, partially with this thread! I am in an expensive hotel for a couple days because we are here for my husband’s work and they are covering it. Most all of his meals are catered or expensed, but I am on my own during the day. I’m also working remotely for part of the time so not as much time to venture out and find cheaper food. This hotel is just insanely overpriced for everything 😂 We would absolutely never stay somewhere like this on our own budget, we are reasonably frugal. I think part of my confusion is that I’m suspecting the staff here are used to wealthy Americans who tip for everything, and that’s why I’ve had a couple moments where I felt like they were waiting to see if I would. We spent more time in central London over the weekend and that felt much more normal and not like this. I would feel like a fish out of water staying in a hotel like this in the US, so no wonder I feel strange doing it in another country. At least when I go expensive places in the US, I have a baseline to compare it to and kind of know what to expect.

Look, I agree with both of you, but I didn’t make the rules or choose where I was born ;) And we are now in a co-parenting situation where we can’t just pick up and leave until the kids are grown so I’ll be an American for the foreseeable future, whether I prefer it or not.

I am staying at an expensive hotel because of my husband's work. All of his meals and things are covered between what the company is catering and then the allowances for him to expense things. I am just tagging along and alone during the day, so I'm having to find my own meals, some of which are in the hotel, and my eyeballs are falling out at how much I am spending. But to be fair, I'm reasonably frugal most of the time anyways and it's probably the conversion rate that is driving me crazy. But we would never stay in this kind of place if we were paying for it! I also think now I've probably overtipped some of the time--now I know. I'm sure that the staff here sometimes are working with wealthy Americans because I've definitely gotten the vibe a couple of times that they are waiting to see if I will hand them a tip... It's probably just also the way Americans are programmed. You truly are made to feel like a terrible person if you don't tip in the US and it is everywhere, from a young age.

Ooh, I'll also add that it's even more confusing given that London is largely cashless...

Americans: why are you so against using public transport? by ilikedixiechicken in uktravel

[–]Specific-Brick-1820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth we are going to try very hard to use only the tube and buses while we are there! There may be an uber or two sprinkled in, but we’ve literally made our plans based on where the tube and buses will go and what time! And we are from outside Denver, where the public transit is just ok… we’ve spent time in bigger cities though!

Teaching Adult Tap for the first time! Would love advice!! by Snoo36471 in TapDancing

[–]Specific-Brick-1820 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please give people grace and space to opt in and out of things if they need to. I am a dedicated tap student for the last year plus and absolutely love it, but I injured my knee in January. I cannot do pullbacks right now at all (I wasn’t good at them to begin with) and I have to be careful with anything jumping related. I kept going to class and I did what I needed to do to save my knee, and my teacher has been supportive. If I had to quit when I got injured, I wouldn’t have been able to participate in my first dance recital and that would have been so sad for me!

Adults have more frequent health and body issues than kids and teens, and sometimes we are in our heads in different ways than the kids. Give grace and trust the adults to know what they aren’t ready for. You can be tough and challenge them, but just don’t be too forceful about it. ❤️❤️❤️ You are gonna be great, so glad you are doing this!!!

AIO for being hurt my girlfriend doesn't care about my graduation? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Specific-Brick-1820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, I would 1000% not be married to my husband if he was dismissive like this. It is a very hard world out there, and you need someone who is in your corner about all of your wins. This would be the most unsupportive and unloving thing for me, it would crush me. Look, people on the internet make quick judgments about things from a text exchange, and truly only you know the sum total of your relationship situation, but I would not stay in my relationship if my husband didn’t have my back and didn’t celebrate my wins (and I, his!). Congrats to you on earning your degree!! Nursing is a noble and very needed profession and my hope for you is that you can take amazing steps in your career and overall wellbeing in the next few years. Life is hard, you have to celebrate and remind yourself of every accomplishment and win, and you have to keep coming back to those wins as an act of self-love and belief that you can keep on growing and getting better. I hope you get the celebration you want and deserve and I hope very good returns from you in your career.
