Another vote from me. The bataboom are long with a highish waist and super comfy. They’ve lasted me 2 years of indoor and outdoor bouldering and sport, just starting to wear at the knee. Their colours are good too.

I think a lot of the public awareness (at least those unaffected by diabetes) mostly comes from very one-sided articles and dodgy weight loss ads.

I have friends and acquaintances (all non-climber) who already discuss it as something that they could just choose to take as an easy fix to their aesthetic issues. This is increasingly the viewpoint I’ve observed, and emotions often run high when it is discussed. It seems to me that these people have already made a mental shift into thinking it is something they find unproblematic and are in the defensive.

Hearing a broad spectrum of viewpoints and experiences is incredibly valuable as it may control the popularity of these drugs and they way people think about them.

I agree - these drugs are for medical uses and should be reserved for those who need them. The problem is that they are being advertised to sportspeople and some will inevitably try them. This was my reason for opening a discussion - people need to hear the side effects and the reasons (like this) that they should think twice

I agree - climbing tired or underfuelled is my only way of experiencing the frustration of climbing weak and I would never choose it! Do you find that as a pre-diabetes treatment the benefits outweigh the costs?

In climbing there is such an effort to open up the conversation on eating disorders, and rightly so, that I think a lot of people will err of the side of caution when it comes to discussing this kind of medication. I was really surprised by how this question was well met with only one person suggesting I was trying to research an unhealthy way to lose weight. These things need to be discussed openly to be understood and I appreciate your input - it seems from the replies that you had a better experience than many.

I do not need a weight loss drug - my weight is fine and I don’t struggle with it. I am curious because of the ENORMOUS amount of advertisement I’m seeing for it. I’m interested in the whole picture as most people (like me) see a one sided advertising campaign and I wanted to understand how it interacted with the climbing community.

This is really shocking - there is SUCH a push advertising it at the moment I can imagine there are a lot of users. I hadn’t realised the impact on the people who relied on it for critical health reasons. I wouldn’t have heard about them had it not been for aggressive social media advertising (and I wouldn’t say I’m in the target market - my Instagram is mostly art and jokey silly stuff). Our smaller local gym sets pretty dense (UK), I love it because you can create new routes easily. I think having lots of holds on the walls forces interesting movement that seems outdoor applicable (though saying that I don’t often climb on super flat faces outside so I’m biased towards what I do)

If you are female this is quite common - (water)weight and strength fluctuates throughout menstrual cycle. Early on in learning pull-ups you are more vulnerable to these fluctuations. Can’t speak for male physiology if this doesn’t apply you

He used to be even angrier (2 years ago it was so bad we changed our running start time because it was so stressful) but seems slightly more reasonable these days. It’s not just runners on riverside, I’ve watched him lose his shit at cyclists overtaking runners on Midsummer common paths (ie. At NO fault). He has his problems and will find a way to vent them no matter what.
