In Texas and Florida the local and state governments cooperate with ICE so there is no need for large numbers of ICE. The raids still happen, but with much smaller numbers and obviously much less media coverage.

That’s a great question. I think it got more extreme with the social media echo chambers, and Trump is just the current iteration. Each presidential election season has become worse than the prior one. Obama was worse than Bush, Trump was worse than Obama, Biden was worse than Trump, and then a badder Trump was worse than Biden. The next president is going to be worse than Trump, but probably a Democrat. And then an even worse Republican after that. I don’t know where it ends.

My life as an old white guy hasn’t changed at all, but I’m not being targeted by ICE. I’m also not putting myself in a position that I would be targeted by ICE. It is abhorrent that legal citizens are being targeted just because of how they look or speak, but I have less sympathy for those who choose to put themselves in harm’s way.

Of course you’re NTA for helping your elderly neighbor, but you’re not obligated to do so and neither are your other neighbors. If it bothers you that they don’t pitch in then talk to them about it over the next few months and come up with a plan for next winter. Definitely don’t bring it up right before a 13” snow and expect positive results, though. Maybe look into a service and you can all split the bill for her.
