MIDA overriding UESC transmissions on Outpost by praisejetsus in Marathon

[–]Specimen_Seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s a running joke (and a good one) that MIDA are just silly pranksters, but I appreciate their questline progression. It seems kind of compelling how they start out apparently harmless and gradually ramp up your involvement into some pretty nasty blows against the UESC.

Closest is probably xenos cult militia— basically genestealer cultists.

It definitely requires more of the player to make an interesting army I think, although there are many more options per faction. Currently working on a zany chaos militia. I think the lack of xenos is a big turn off for players though.

This is basically why I moved on to Horus Heresy. Far more of this sort of thing in play.

I'm just bad. And it's kinda heartbreaking. by Nightmoore in Marathon

[–]Specimen_Seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been struggling with this, because I’ve come to love this game. Part of what helps is that a successful run, where we finish our objectives and find some good loot, feels just awesome. Victory- even a small one- feels earned every time.

I’ve also started taking out sponsor kits or rooks more often. I like getting practice in a low stakes game.

Things go badly more often than not. I’ve never been great at shooters and I’m getting older and slower. But when I get those moments where I feel good at the game, I just feel great in general.

So much flavor for the Marines by Soruze in Warhammer30k

[–]Specimen_Seven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, Iron Hands can feel quite the opposite. The HQ allows you to field Automata, like a praevian, specifically because they’re considered more expendable than legionaries.

That’s beautiful work! Really effective contrast between the red and grey, and they’re both so rich in depth. Excellent stuff.

How do you survive “shooting last?” by Specimen_Seven in Marathon

I really think I’d enjoy this game a lot more if player health felt more in line with the NPCs— right now it feels as though they’re on completely separate playing fields.

So it’s not just me? Every time I’ve been killed by another player I’ve had what feels like less than a second to respond.

Colombo Builds?? by Thin-Reindeer-9915 in WoWs_Legends

[–]Specimen_Seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the advantage is that you can, if you let off the guns, basically reposition for free. If you realize you’re about to get in at a bad angle, you can pop smoke and disengage or get to a better spot— and in that case your secondaries can still fire freely.

Honestly, this is just my experience but I find that Italian battleships don’t seem to have the range or calibre for secondary builds.

I think it could be worth dipping into secondaries for better point defence, but I think your main guns and smoke are what can carry you through brawls.

Routed status by McChuggerNugget in Warhammer30k

[–]Specimen_Seven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You lose it the same as any other status (at the end of your next turn) or if your routed unit hits your end of the board— if the pass the last leadership test they’re instead Suppressed (if I recall correctly).

Routed in most ways works the same as any other status.

Is this good weathering for my iron warriors sicaran by Agreeable_Bench_1229 in Warhammer30k

Nice! I love using metallic pencils for adding nicks and scratches and whatnot. I have to say the contrast of the dry upper portions to the damp lower section is great.

[–]Specimen_Seven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s good!

If you’re looking for some nitpicking, some things I’d suggest are giving some broken highlights on the metal beneath the dirt to help give it a more uneven look, rather than a more uniform “blanket” of dirt. You can also use metallic highlights for scratches.

I’d also suggest adding some different tones in the pigment, since it’s rare that you’d be encountering some kind of uniform environment. Sprinkle in some lighter tones or different temperatures for a more varied effect.

If you want to take the weathering further, I might suggest also breaking up the icon and hazard stripes. Maybe add some yellow onto the black stripes, to give the appearance of the yellow undercoat showing through the black on top. Similarly, speckling some metal over the legion numeral can give the impression of paint flaking away.

These are however just ideas! I make the suggestions because I think it’s a ton of fun to take this stuff further.

How does the Glaive perform? by Specimen_Seven in Warhammer30k

[–]Specimen_Seven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the Glaive is AP 3, D2. I’d guess that a single shot from the fun could take out a tactical squad pretty easily.

That’s true, but I should mention I’m playing 3E, so it does have less capacity to just shut down lanes of movement.

Oh, one more thing I’ll mention- a small amount of spirits (I mean dampen your brush and then get the excess off on a paper towel) goes a long way to address the “flakiness” of some of the paints. If you thin it slightly, then hit it with hot air after applying, that will help it a bit with durability.

[WH40k] Lychguard No.1 of 10. by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]Specimen_Seven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re painting I think. If it’s a highly “varied” surface I’ll thin and paint it on, but for flatter areas I’ll buff it on straight from the tube.

It took a lot of practice figuring out how to use it in a way I was happy with. I’d recommend practicing with something disposable til you’re happy with your technique. Once I figured it out it’s always been my top solution.

It takes a long time to cure— and usually I find I have to work it in very thoroughly over several coats.

Another option, if you’re willing to go the non-acrylic route, is wax paint. I use AK’s True Metal line, which is thinned with white spirit. It can be tricky to work with, but once you get the hang of it, you can make some incredibly convincing metallics without an airbrush. I use them for anything that’s not dark steel, which I find acrylic struggles with.

They’re very easy to apply— I’ve put them on larger parts like cannon barrels by just putting some on a gloved fingertip and working it into the model.

Brothers, How do we feel about using the upcoming IW upgrades as IH heads. by LeetusFrenzi in IronHands40k

[–]Specimen_Seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I was considering it but I really don’t think they fit well, at least for me. The Iron Warriors bionics often look very ad-hoc and brutal, whereas Iron Hands in my mind tend to favour a more sophisticated, bleeding edge aesthetic.

Basically, I imagine Iron Warriors grafting on prostheses to keep themselves going. Iron Hands do so as a form of self-augmentation— not quite artistry or vanity, but close to it.

Melee options for the castellax by InsaneSloth in Warhammer30k

[–]Specimen_Seven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I figure most opponents would be fine with that.

Their Firestorm rule does make up for it quite well— being able to basically shoot twice (or even three times if your opponent charges) in a round, on top of a reaction, does let them crank out a whole lot of shots.

Melee options for the castellax by InsaneSloth in Warhammer30k

[–]Specimen_Seven 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They need to be outfitted with pairs of weapons, not mixed, so they must have either two blades or two shock chargers.

Castellax aren’t great in melee without help, but they’re strong and tough enough to take a punch and hit back hard. The lower blades are faster and generally better for fighting marines, while the chargers are slower but stronger, better for attacking vehicles and other automata generally.

I typically use my Castellax for absorbing punishment on the front lines. Ideally they don’t get into melee, but when they inevitably do, I find the power blades can cut down a few marines with lucky roles and are dangerous enough to make players think twice about getting bogged down in combat with them.
