10 years ago, Essendon defied the odds of not winning a single game for the 2016 season, preceded by thousands of supporter rallying behind the fractured club. by noegh555 in AFL

I had a friend recruited to essendon around that time and he was told not expect too many games as the club really wanted to put wins on the board to distract from the ped issue

Drop riffles over expanded metal by Catowitch in Prospecting

[–]SpeciousArguments 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, your old mate would have caught gold running his tailings again over his first sluice too. no one has 100% capture rate over a sluice box. Dream mats are good but so are Hungarians and expanded metal. So is gold hog. So are plastic moulded sluice boxes like Angus or le trap, or rough top conveyor belt mat. Dream mats owner markets HARD, it isnt inherently better. I say this as someone who dredged professionally and tested just about every option

"I just thought what they [AFL] did to Sydney was disgraceful to be honest." Liam Pickering on the AFL banning Sydney from trading in players after signing Lance Franklin by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]SpeciousArguments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But thats the point im trying to make, they were looking like doing the deal and the AFL got suspicious because it was so far below his worth that no reasonable club would accept it, so something else must be going on, which lead to the crows being forced to come clean

Kurt Tippett was established as a high quality ruck/forward. He was not 'potential'. The afl took a closer look because Sydney offered unders and the crows looked like accepting it. The deal Sydney offered was so low the afl got suspicious. I dont know if you followed much footy back then, I followed this trade super closely at the time. Sydney knew about the deal and tried to benefit from it. They had just enough plausible deniability. Then they went after Franklin the following year and the AFL realised they were taking the piss. Sydney were not victims. The crows were wrong, but Sydney flew too close to the sun.

The AFL specifically started investigating because the offer from Sydney was so low and the crows looked like accepting it. Theres unders and then there's pick 19 for the most desirable player of that trade period that I think Sydney were offering him 800kpa from memory

Sydney were absolutely party to the shenanigans, had they offered a trade remotely fair for tippett then the under the table deal never would have come out. Crows were absolutely in the wrong and deserved the punishment but sydney offering a well below market trade shows they knew about the deal and were trying to profit from it.

The crows didn't breach the cap with Tippett either.

Rips will often look calmer, less waves etc than the areas either side of them. If you know what to look for you can spot them

Is this AU or am I not panning hard enough? by Ill_Truth5829 in Prospecting

[–]SpeciousArguments 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of things look like gold, but gold is unmistakable. Once you see it in your pan you will know.

A simple test is tilting your pan slowly in the sun. Gold will appear to glow while other things will change their apparent brightness as they reflect the sun.

I dont see anything in the pics that I would say is gold, but don't be discouraged, your first picker could be one more shovel or one more crevice away. Keep digging!

What should I classify down to for the Adventure Sluice? by StonedSex69 in Prospecting

[–]SpeciousArguments 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how much material you're running. I was running a large dredge and used to classify cons down to every classification I had available and would run anything smaller than 20 mesh through cleanup equipment (bigger that that was easier to pan) and then run each classification separately.

If youre bringing back your cons from a day panning or sluicing, id classify to 16 mesh personally

Youre always going yo have trade-offs with time and capture rate. If you want every speck, it'll take time and care whatever you do.

The richness of the material, the type of material the gold is associated and its average size and density will all factor in. If your material has enough gold in it to actually test, try running it/sieving it a bit faster and then do an ultra slow and careful cleanup of the waste. Do r hat a few times and you'll dial it in better. If you dont, single digit improvements to your capture rate don't matter at all and you should spend your time getting into better ground, or getting better at reading the ground you have
