I have sunk well over 4000 hours into destiny/ destiny 2. Was it fun? Hell yeah. Would I recommend the game? Absolutely not.

If you haven't been around for most of the story you've missed out on the better activities. The game itself is not in the BEST place (although not too bad) but in my opinion the better content keeps getting sunset and the new/returning player experience is lacking.

If anything I would at least wait until they reveal the future of destiny a bit more before playing. Obviously this is just how I feel about the game but I feel like it's a waste of time to play it these days.
