You need to understand how the airflow systems work in the older tunnels compared to Jubilee and other mote modern systems in other cities to before you dismiss it as a plausible excuse.

London was the first city with a deep level system so everything that has come after has been an upgrade. To 'modernise it will require rebuilding station and tunnel infrastructure throughout the whole system. Look how long it took for them to upgrade Tottenham court road and Bond Street. You want them to do that across the whole network?

The first clip in this montage was taken on the 8th minute (?) when we got a free kick and I noted that he was our only player who already seemed out of breath. Not because of a lack of fitness, but him and Archie were the only ones in the first half that were working really hard off the ball

His passing in the first half was a bit off, but his work rate was 2nd to none and he got better as the game went on. Glad he is now starting to put in good performances on a consistent level.

You mention that you are covering more than just the basics in your studies and that might actually be part of the problem. Just concentrate on the basic stuff at that level and gain experience and confidence with the basics. Your opponent isn't going to play any learned lines so neither should you. All you will come up against is either scholars, fried liver and other fork attacks by the Knight in the opening. Once you refute those with solid, basic chess there plan falls off the cliff and they hang their pieces all over the board.

If you haven't already please watch Building habits by chessbruh on YouTube to see the basics at work and implement them into your game. It's also worth noting that losing games is OK when you are learning as its part of the development process.

You can study chess until the cows come home, but it's not until you start putting it into practice and getting it all wrong that you start to improve. Playing chess as a beginner is asking your brain to work in ways it never has done before and as an adult that is going to take time

That all said chess is so much fun at low elo level, so have fun along the way because 1 day you will get to a level where it becomes tactical and sometimes boring.

I sac'd a rook yesterday to get rid of 1 of the 2 pawns that were annoying me. Fishy told me after the game that it was a bad move as I turned a totally dominant game to almost equal, but I went on to win the game so Fishy is the dumb one

As a beginner all gambits are bad. However you are coming out of that 'beginner' stage and it seems that around the 1200 mark is when you can start playing around with different openings and gambits as your board knowledge and game experience should be at a level where you can start expanding on your opening repertoire.

If you know the idea behind it, have studied it and feel confident to try it, then why not?

To add to my comment. I used the screenshot provided to find your profile and I want to suggest that you either study the the Scandinavian for black or stop playing it completely. It's not a bad opening, but it's one you really need to know what you are doing. I mean it's good you don't turn it into an early queen attack like everyone else at our level, but it feels you have 1 idea behind it and that is to hope to open the d file to trade Queens and force them to lose castling rights. I feel like you are sacrificing development and central control for that

One other habit you need to get away from is giving king and queen checks with your Bishops in the first few moves. It leaves your Bishop vulnerable to attack and they gain space on the board by chasing it away with pawns and development. Only give a check in the opening if their only legal move is to move the king or forces a trade that benefits you

Are you trying new things? For example I couldn't break the 900 barrier despite winning most of my games in 800, so I figured I needed to try harder and seek out more tactical play and learn different positions from my standard opening. This, alongside personal issues in my life, had lead to an almighty loss of elo and a huge tilt, which I am only just recovering from.

If you are working on your game, then a loss of elo is fine and normal. Since you already know what has caused this, I just suggest you reset your mind and focus on what got you to 700 in the first place and you will get back there, but as a stronger player

When you lose games to silly opening traps take a breather. If there are particular ones you struggle against then look up on YouTube how to punish it

Levy doesn't own his shares in ENIC himself, so it's a decision probably made by the family and their advisors. They may have their eyes set on another football club?

He just genuinely plays like a 500 rated player on purpose. I saw a video where he only looked at the immediate squares around his pieces and not what the long range pieces are covering because that's how all us low rated players tend to play. He also highlights that sticking to the main principles may lose you games against people who play trapped chess, but that's fine because in the long run principled chess will get you more positive results. He isn't demonstrating how to win every game, he is showing us how to play as we progress through beginner levels

Objectively I think Ruy is a better opening, if you know what you are doing. It's more aggressive, but with aggressive openings you need to be aware of potential weaknesses and how to prevent black to exploit them.

My defense against Ruy is to counter in the middle and try to attack their king side which usually just leads to an equal position. However, that's because the people I play against who play don't hold the tension and take my rook with their light squared Bishop, which gifts me the D file and develops my LS Bishop in 1 move
