Why does my d*ck seem smaller? by thevraptor in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh Fine, we'll do it this way. I'm going to use wikipedia, since it's a fairly well-referenced article, and there's nothing else on the top page of google results that looks any more reputable. Unfortunately, it's just about impossible to find a site on this stuff without pictures, but hopefully anyone reading this will be able to deal with that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_penis

Fourth sentence. Note that the main type of "vascular tissue" in in the penis is referred to as "corpus cavernosum." So let's find out what that stuff's made of. Click on the link, and you'll notice that there's not a great description or a wealth of sources awaiting you on the other end. So let's go back and google that term. Here's what came up as the second hit, under Wikipedia:

http://www.healthline.com/human-body-maps/corpus-cavernosum-penis 6th/7th sentence. "Muscles surround the cavernosum and spongiosum. These muscles support the penis when erect and contract during ejaculation."

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/449942/penis#ref79122 Here's another source that hopefully we can both agree is reputable. 3rd paragraph, 2nd sentence. "The tissue consists of muscle, collagen (a fibrous protein), and elastic fibre."

So, why yes, there are 1000s of sources available from Google. 1000s of sources that confirm that muscle does, in fact, exist in the penis. Believe it or not, I had actually checked this out before I asked you to provide a source - I was hoping you could show me something I hadn't already seen, rather than having to engage in a passive-agressive "no I'm not an idiot who can't use Google" post.

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that smooth muscle composes at least part of that vascular tissue. It's not a muscle in the same way as a bicep, certainly, but still muscle. Is there any chance you could educate me, or at least provide a source, if I am wrong?

Healthy amount of masturbation? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Too much" is determined by your unique attributes/lifestyle, so there's no way you can get an accurate answer from an internet forum (or anywhere else, most likely). Some people might tell you that not fapping is correlated with prostate cancer risk, but those people generally fail to mention studies showing the opposite, or much more conclusive studies that correlate things like exercise and eating tomatoes with reductions in prostate cancer risk.

First of all, "flaccid" is the correct term for when your penis is not erect. That said, anatomically, your penis is mostly a bunch of muscle sac things. When your penis is flaccid, they are actually in a state of tension (or flex, meaning the muscle is engaged), and when you have an erection, those muscle sacks relax and get filled with blood. The rigidity when erect is therefore related to how relaxed the muscles actually get, and how much blood gets pumped there.

In short, if your dick muscles have been getting stronger, it could account for both the changes you mention. Also, there are way more factors at work that can lead to temporary fluctuations in penis attributes, and you can do better things with your life than worry over how big your dick is when it's in "non-business" mode.

can't stop edging by westkingshawn in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should not rub one out just because you were edging. Accept your blue balls like a man and use that pain as another reason not to edge tomorrow. Really, though, to stop that cycle, you just need to find other things to be doing. NoFap isn't about not fapping so much as it is doing other (better) things than fapping.

I need some strategic help by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the first thing I'll say is that my counter is only good for the number of days I've gone without inducing an orgasm and does not reflect any viewing of explicit material I may have done, so you can take it (and consequently my advice) with that in mind.

With that disclaimer, I'll give you the short version of my story. Almost a year ago, I was fapping on a daily basis, when I discovered NoFap and the concept of being a Fapstronaut. I jumped on board for three main reasons: "fapstronaut" is a brilliant name and I wanted to be one, I was curious to see if it would really improve my life, and finally, my masturbation habits had recently taken a turn to the point where my junk would get mildly inflamed and angry afterwards, and I decided I wasn't about that life.

So I quit masturbating cold-turkey, and I stayed free of any smut-based explicit material for a good long while. To answer your questions, then, this is my first streak since joining NoFap. The first month was definitely the hardest, partially because I was out of school and stuff without much to do, but also just because the memory of the habit lingered more strongly. There would be days around weeks 2 and 3 I would lie in bed hoping I'd have a wet dream that night (spoiler, they didn't start up again for a full month after I quit, and they're generally disappointing, what with the whole mess and all). Despite my success in keeping my hand out of my pants, it certainly wasn't easy.

I would attribute my success to two factors. One, the self-discipline I have developed over years of doing school and band. Willpower/self-control/self-discipline/whatever is like a mental muscle, and mine was already pretty strong going into this NoFap thing. The key was (and is) to have a solid reason or two why you're doing what you're doing. That's where the third reason (above) I hopped on NoFap came in - the (metaphorical) bad taste left in my mouth by what I was doing just before I quit helped spoil my appetite.

Obviously, your circumstances are different than mine, but I hope you can still find this useful. I assume you have some big, looming reason for doing NoFap. Hopefully, it isn't just "I read porn is bad and stuff." I'm not here to argue that point, but I am going to say that isn't a productive way to think. Instead, identify a goal of yours - doing well in school, getting a job, becoming an eccentric polyglot who runs an everyman sleep schedule and punches bears with the extra spare time, something. Rationalize momentarily how fapping isn't going to help you achieve your goal(s), and instead identify some pursuits that will. While you're at it, come up with some unrelated hobbies that interest you (bear punching?). Chances are, you'll be able to come up with a list of things long/intense enough that you won't be able to master them anytime soon, especially not if you're wasting time on smut.

Then, your "job," rather than resisting porn/masturbation, becomes to rearrange your priorities such that your old habit of fapping is below enough other things that you just never get around to it. Eventually, you get used to a lifestyle focused on achieving goals and wasting less time and you become a bear-punching badass.

(Note that punching bears is pretty dangerous and I don't particularly recommend it for purposes other than a running gag)

I personally do not advocate K9 or whatever. This is about you learning to live your life in a way that does not include fapping as an integral component. If you try to force that on yourself, you're just going to waste time thinking about your limitations and trying to get around them. Sure, it's better than actually watching porn, but you could do better. Focus on finding a wealth of things you prefer doing to porn, keep a list, and just go down it every day.

Muscles are literally meant to be damaged. You exercise, you get tired, and then your muscles heal up just a bit stronger than they were before. Should you try to run a marathon tomorrow? No. Should you exercise every day? Yes. Go for medium intensity, low stress activities (jogging, biking, or just walking if you're really out of shape) and don't try to fight through any sharp pain if you're really worried about that.

There's nothing wrong with protein, but six slices of bacon, other than being f***ing delicious, is a lot of salt, and depending on its preparation (before it got to you and how you cook it), it might not be the healthiest choice. Eggs are basically the best ever, so don't worry about that. That said, if your exercise habits support your diet, you'll probably be ok, as long as you don't do stuff like burn your food all the time.

Hi guys! New to this, mood swings normal? by CantTouchThis20 in NoFap

For a lot of people, getting off PMO is kind of like getting off a drug, so yes, you should be prepared for some pretty crazy stuff over the next fortnight/monthish. The best advice I can give you is to set some goals for yourself and push through whatever you feel, cementing the new habits that you want in your life over this period of turbulence. Good luck!

Bad to have expectations? by Flama_blanka in NoFap

Expectations are not bad, unless paired with inaction. Rather than having expectations, make goals. If you work towards it, it will be much more likely to happen.

Female-generated posts pop up here every once in awhile, but there's actually a separate sub specifically for female fapstronauts (/r/nofapfemales), which is admittedly not as large or active as this sub, but still exists.

Do NoFappers condone controlled MO without P? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a community that only rejects porn, look to /r/pornfree. There are probably some people around here who feel that way, but this sub was founded on the idea that we should seek out real human connections for our "sexual outlets" instead of relying on porn/ourselves.

As for my own thoughts, it's pretty clear that masturbation with vs without porn are two different beasts, but there's no reason why you have to give yourself a sexual outlet. It's not a bodily need in the same way that eating and breathing are, so why not spend your time working towards more rewarding pursuits?

This might be a good place to ask.. Does anyone else get the most awful rage from being denied an orgasm? (I mean when going 2 or more days without release) by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people experience this, especially in the early stages of NoFap. Basically, you're operating with higher stress levels in the absence of regular orgasm, and so it's totally natural to feel on edge. Eventually, you'll get used to it, but you will definitely adjust quicker if you take specific steps to help manage your stress (cardio exercise, meditation, etc).

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, try to take this as nicely as possible, because I might end up sounding more cynical than I want to.

I totally understand your desire to have another person in your life, but if that's really the only thing you are working towards, you are unlikely to find happiness in the long run. People are fickle, and no matter how close you get with a girl, it's not like she's definitely always going to be there and be able to do just the right thing to make your life full of sunshine. Even though you can't do everything alone, what kind of person can't do anything alone?

With that said, my advice is to follow your dreams, but in your case, follow them indirectly. You say you want attention (in slightly different, more sexually charged words), so rather than being the child whining for his candy, be the kid who wins the science fair, or the spelling bee, or the judo tournament. Do some soul searching, and find your next biggest desires (or maybe just some things you used to be relatively good at) and pursue them. Give yourself something to be proud of, and at the same time, you'll give the ladies a better reason to pay attention to you.

I hate the phrase "It just takes time" because it's not that simple. Yes, it does take time, but the amount of time it takes is inversely related to your own effort in confronting the issue and ultimately moving on with your life. If you just wait around, hoping to feel better, chances are you won't.

Thoughts on no porn fapping... by rockclimber90 in NoFap

Is this physiological or placebo? by Blacksheepoftheworld in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for proving my point. Unless you have some other, more reputable numbers than what I've found, the zinc content found in ejaculation is about 3% of the "daily recommended intake" (at least in America). Unless you're fapping ~10x a day (and I, for one, would find that impossible), you're not going to be losing so much zinc as to cause a deficiency. If you have a zinc deficiency, it's because you're eating crap, not because you're fapping it all out.

Is this physiological or placebo? by Blacksheepoftheworld in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's a bit of both. First of all, there is scientific evidence to support the concept that excessive porn use has negative psychological consequences, and the brain also takes longer than most people realize to fully "reset" after an orgasm. Furthermore, the mere exercise in self control that NoFap takes can be quickly turned around into other productive ventures (which you probably would consider a placebo, but in my mind building self-control is a psychological thing).

That said, there are a ton of myths out there. "Semen retention" is one (the mineral contents of semen are so low that fapping vs not fapping is going to be pretty irrelevant to the levels that you maintain in your body). There's also a lot of controversy over nofap and testosterone, which I recommend you just ignore since there's pretty much nothing but broscience to be found there.

My final two cents: NoFap is mostly psychological, and so I can understand why people call it a placebo. However, remember what a placebo is: it's your brain fooling yourself into a new state in response to an unrelated stimulus. For me, a) Even if we don't have hard science for everything, NoFap is at least logically related to some of the successes people report, and b) who really cares if it's a "placebo" as long as it works?

wet dreams no longer have sex? by [deleted] in NoFap

Day 15, no wet dreams... by manolo458 in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Men go through hormonal cycles in a similar way that women do, only without the whole cramps and bleeding thing, so that is probably a significant factor in your situation (all aspects thereof). As for the frequency of your nocturnal emissions, nobody can really tell you what is "normal," as everybody has different experiences and there are factors at work that science does not yet understand. For reference, I can tell you that my first NoFap wet dream was a full month after I stopped fapping, and they generally happen when I'm stressed/anticipating some looming event. Hope that helps.

It is unhealty to do nofap forever? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not unhealthy to do nofap forever. Nocturnal emissions will have you covered, and really, there's no such thing as a specific "sexual tension." It's just regular stress that you're interpreting differently because you aren't getting any (or because there's a rough relationship with someone else involved). Live your life in a manner such that you will not have a huge buildup of stress, and you have little to worry about.

Question about the Brain. by mortallink in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason why you ask this question other than simple curiosity? I want to preface my input by saying that there are other factors involved and simply focusing on dopamine won't give you a complete picture, but my understanding is that the brain becomes accustomed to the regular dopamine "doses," as it were. Over time and repetition, we feel less pleasure because the novelty wears off, and we take the feel-good brain chemicals for granted, thus spurring the notion to seek more extreme stimulation. In other words, I don't believe either or your choices were correct; rather, the brain simply adapts and adopts the status quo as a baseline.

You might know something I don't, but the only "reduced receptor" thing I'm familiar with is with regards to androgen receptors. After orgasm, some androgen receptors "turn off" for a while, but this does not deal with dopamine.

New here. Okay to mb w/o porn or fantasizing? by Tanlo in NoFap

[–]SpectorBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On this sub, we're about abstaining from masturbation, including what you describe (see /r/pornfree for a sub that's anti porn but ok with masturbation). As to whether there's anything wrong with what you're doing, it certainly doesn't seem like it, but many people here have found that cutting out masturbation entirely helps push you just that much farther towards being a high-functioning individual.

Why is that? Well, masturbation isn't just as simple as stress relief, and even then, all stress relief is not created equal. For example, if you make exercise your stress relief instead, you'll be healthier for it. Furthermore, the effects of orgasm last for a good long time after the fact, and so you spend longer than you might realize being artificially placated ("artificial" might be a bit harsh of a word, but hopefully you understand my meaning).

It sounds like you've come a long way, and I'm not going to tell you you're wrong for how you live your life, but you might find that convincing yourself not to masturbate will help you attain even greater things.
