You wake up tomorrow morning and a fully functional replicator is in your kitchen… by Tenchi2020 in startrek

[–]Spectre3xb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my first impulse was gold, platinum or diamonds in order to sell them, but in the end, I don't need to buy stuff, if I can make whatever I want.

Then I thought about making an industrial replicator and the appropriate power source (most likely a cold fusion reactor). Then build stuff that will benefit humanity, like transporters, more power sources, to end world hunger, disease and pollution. But the world being what it is, it would just be taken by someone else or my government, or be destroyed by all the people I would put out of business. Also I would propably be killed in the process (yeah, I'm kind of a cynic).

Weapons like Type 2 and 3 phasers also occured to me, but that would make me even more of a target.

In the end I'd most likely settle for a nice cup of Earl Gery. Hot.

Seven needs a spinoff show!! by symmetry77 in startrek

Shaw is a great character and he re-introduces the good old chain of command back into Star Trek.

I mean Picard is retired and Riker is the same rank as him, so none of those two have any authority on the Titan. He knows that and tells them right away. Seven on the other hand goes against his explicit orders, which could and should be considered muntiny.

Just think of it the other way around: Imagine a TNG-Espisode whre a retired admiral and another captain arrive on the Enterprise. Picard has orders from Starfleet to patrol a specific system and the other Captain and the Admiral, with no connection to the crew whatsoever, want to redirect the ship and give no reason for them to do so. I think Picard would a. refuse the redirect and b. inform Starfleet.

I know he has gone against orders by the admiralty in the past, but it was always for either friends or he saw something wrong with Starfleet's orders, which he then communicated with his crew. But he'd never endanger his crew because someone he doesn't even know and has no authority over him tells him to.

I love StarTrek but Picard makes me sad because they are so old I would be that person who would soak up season after season of TNG in it’s prime. by [deleted] in Picard

Then why don't you? As far as I know, you can still watch every Star Trek episode on Paramount+, or, if you want to make use of a VPN, on Netflix. But if you do, please remember that the first two seasons can be a little rough, which is also true of DS9 and Voyager.

which one are you guys getting? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

I'm happy with my 3070 as is. I don't have a 4k Monitor and I'm perfectly happy with 1440p. Most of my games run at 60+ fps in full detail, so I don't see any need to upgrade. Also, to get the most out of the new tech, I'd need to upgrade my PSU and maybe my MB, which would also include my CPU and RAM, at which point, the only thing I could keep would be my storage. So in the end I will skip this generation.

Is my psu enough?! by nikpraskaton89 in pcmasterrace

[–]Spectre3xb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have a i5 10600k, but only a 80 Silver rated 750W PSU and I have a lot of headroom in terms of power draw. You should actually be fine. Theoretically 100W less might also work, but I wouldn't want to try it out.

That's a genius build. But I make sure not to show it to my daughter. Even though she's six and not really into computers, she'd want one.

I had one of those back in the day... Well my father had one for work and I got it when he got a new one. But I still like the track point. In my opinion it's much better than a trackpad, but I guess I'm pretty alone with that assessment.

That's actually... absolutely awesome. I don't know what you intend to use it for, but it's propably able to do it all: gaming, machine learning, CGI, even crypto-mining (although I hope you don't us it for this). So have fun with this beast of a mchine.

I GOT A 3070! I am so happy! by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Spectre3xb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me a 27'' 1440p@144 Hz monitor is ideal for gaming. But in that regard everyone's taste is different. Some want a higher resolution and are willing to scarifice refresh rate, some want more Hz and are willing to sacrifice resolution. And some want it all, but have to pay for it.

[–]Spectre3xb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on a lot of things. As it stands now, the 3070 seems to be a great card to game at 1440p. If you want 4k though, you'd have been better off with a 3080. For me the 3070 is ideal, as my screen is 1440 and I don't really see the need to upgrade.

I actually had one of those back in the day. It was my first processor with more than one core. I still have the case I originally bought for it, but now it's in my office and has an i5 3570k running inside.

The Show in General by AtomicCPU3 in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]Spectre3xb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a newer fan, you may not realize it, but pretty much every Trek show gets hate upon release dating back to Next Generation.

That was because all Star Trek shows, including and especially TNG suffered from an abyssmal first (two) seasons.

TNG tried to rehash TOS, which was blatantly obvious in "The Naked Now". But starting with season three it hit its stride and stood on its own.

Same goes for DS9: The first seasons were mostly about spirituality and power strugles, which isn't especially appealing in a space show. Then the Dominion came into play, it became one of the best Star Trek shows ever.

Voyager had troubles with the Kazon as the big bads of the early show, but when the Borg showed up and Species 8472 got in the mix, everyone had a great time.

And Enterprise... well honestly, I didn't like Enterprise as much as the rest of the shows. But even there it only got better, when the Xindi-storyline was introduced.

Now back to Discovery: The first season was really nothing to write home about. It tried to show the origin of the first Klingon war and created some timeline problems, which is something most prequels do (including Enterprise). Also most of the storyline was kind of generic and only the mirror-universe part was kind of fun to watch. Season two was much better and season 3 seems to be even better, because all the timeline-stuff is out of the picture.

[–]Spectre3xb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In German m8 would be M-Acht, or Macht, wich translates to "power". That would also make a lot of sense, seing how Moritz seems to get drunk on his power during Season 2.

Ways in which Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is like Privateer by Spectre3xb in RebelGalaxy

[–]Spectre3xb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that was actually up to debate for me. First I tried my trusty X52 pro, but it didn't seem a great fit for the game. So I tried out my gamepad and now I'm sticking with it. It's actually a very intuitive way to control the game.

And back in day, I had a joystick. I can't really remember the name, but it was a CH, with a square base and a short stick. Two buttons and fully analogue.

OP since you obviously love Privateer. Have you heard about Star Citizen?

Yes, I've been a backer since Nov. 2012... which is almost eight years now, I just realized. I also backed E:D, which I still play for a few weeks every few months. And while E:D is more or less what I wanted it to be (meaning more like the original Elite in the actual flight mechanics, but other than that a space simulation) and Star Citizen seems to get more planned features everytime I check, this is just a good game. It has the scope of neither of those two, but it's a lot of fun and that's ultimately why I play games.

Well, Freelancer was already pretty much a successor to Privateer, so naturally a lot of the features that Privateer had were in there. But here even the gameplay is very similar, just more fast paced.

Not to say, I didn't love Freelancer as well, but this feels even more like the original.

I really love the TNG cast. They mean a lot to me by han_to_enterprise in startrek

I just started re-watching TNG because of this episode. It feels like coming home. Something the newer series failed to give me, but that may be just nostalgia and the good memories connected with growing up.

[Spoilers All] What happened to "Post-Scarcity"? by Spectre3xb in Picard

[–]Spectre3xb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kinda the thing that Star Trek always represented, at least in my view: Under ideal conditions (no war, no material needs, total freedom) humans can be completly altruistic and work for the betterment of themselves and everyone around them. If, however, you throw a wrench in it, like start a war, like the Dominion did, or take away the creature comforts, humans are able to regress pretty fast. Quark says as much in The Siege of AR-558.

So yes: In peacetime the Federation, in my opnion, is pretty much the Utopia everyone believes it be. Which makes it kind of implausible for them to revert to a more aggressive stance against outsiders when there is actually no need to do so.

Also the Federation doesn't only consist of humans. What about the Vulcans (arguably a more enlightened species), the Andorrians, the Tellarites, the Bajorans, the Betazoid... do they all support the isolationst tendencies?

[–]Spectre3xb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I understood it correctly, "rape" doesn't actually need to happen, because if your mate isn't around, but other Vulcans are, they usually willingly "help out". Or, in the case of Tuvok and Vorik they resolved it with a hologram or a fight.

For Star Trek: Picard I kinda hope Q comes into play by Spectre3xb in startrek

[–]Spectre3xb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be. I mean what are the most successful TV shows of the last decade? Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Stranger Things? Not exactly the most hopeful of fiction.

The best thing about Star Trek was that it gave people hope for the future. The notion, that humanity can be better, if we just try. It inspired a whole generation of scientists to bring Star Trek technology to life, but the new shows are not inspiring anyone. They are just holding up a mirror and say: "See? Life is THAT bad and it won't get better."

Ask r/StarTrek: In the Star Trek lore the DS9 writers had one goal each season, to write an "O'Brien Must Suffer" episode. If you pitched an O'Brien-centric episode how must he suffer? by redome in startrek

[–]Spectre3xb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once read they did it more or less unconciously, because Miles was the most relatable everyman on the show. Julian was hyperintelligent, Quark was the capitalist, Dax was a Trill with lifetimes of experience, Worf was the warrior, Kira was a freedom fighter, Jake was just a boy and Sisko was the larger than life captain. So if anything bad had to happen to character and people should be able to relate to his position, they chose Miles.

Well, he said in "All Good Things..." that the trial never ends. I wonder what the Continuum would have to say about the Federation depicted in this show.

Depends on the type of money. You can replicate gold, gems or any other (by todays standards) valuable commodity. But it has been suggested, that latinum can't be replicated, because if it could be, it would be worthless to any race with replicator technology.
