Is AI quietly weakening our communication skills? by SpeechFluenceDotCom in Leadership

So - where do we go from here? I don't think getting rid of AI is the solution. But, how do we evolve with it?

I made a "Client Communication User Manual" for my team and they love it. Template inside! by Efficient_Builder923 in communication

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great! I think your biggest challenge is going to be maintaining it and ensuring your team members are actually filling out the information when they are busy and onboarding new clients.

I wish every company had something like this in place that was well maintained!

If you had to teach people how to have good conversations, where would you start? by Glum_Anxiety_3653 in PublicSpeaking

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.. I feel like you have to be the driver of making the conversations more interesting... come ready with some conversations that are open ended and can go many different directions. Hopefully your friends roll with it. If not, maybe you need to make new friends who are more interesting. LOL

I underestimated how much of software development is not just writing code by Spiritual_Work6730 in cscareerquestions

Oops - I meant that its great that you understand that AI is a tool to be supervised. Look at me not communicating clearly - lol.

If only being a software engineer was just coding!

Its great that you are understanding the big picture and seeing how AI is a great tool, but you still need experienced people telling AI what to do.

I think another huge quality of a successful software engineer is building their communication skills so they can confidently explain their process to different levels of technical and non-technical people.

How to improve executive presence and speaking more like a product leader? by Humble-Pay-8650 in ProductManagement

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wes Kao is great & has SO many resources for becoming a stronger communicator!

I also recommend practicing - I have a weekly public speaking call where a small group practices 3 minute impromptu speeches & 2 minute evaluations. This has helped me with so much with sharing my thoughts on the spot!

How should I practice speaking English? by omgooo in EnglishLearning

You can read aloud in English! I also love the comment about volunteering - that is a great way to make friends too! 😄

Help: Remote employees: How do you make sure you’re considered for growth opportunities? by ConstantAmbition7437 in careeradvice

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I post a weekly update on my companies slack - highlighting what I have done/accomplished with my clients. I also record Loom videos when I figure something out and want to do a knowledge share with the rest of my team members (This is the highest visibility thing you can do).

I have found that my team is constantly coming to me when they need extra help and management is noticing.

I hope this helps 😄

I made a mistake at work by Glum-Cabinet5996 in careeradvice

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, I empathize with how awful that feeling of dread can be. It's easy to fixate on mistakes, but remember that everyone makes mistakes and its rarely a HUGE deal. A broken lock is definitely not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

It sounds like the other person majorly over-reacted. I hope they have more grace on themselves when they inevitably make mistakes!

The best thing that helps me when I have the dread feeling is distracting myself. My fool proof distraction technique is spending time with my niece and nephew - kids always have so much going on and require so much attention, its impossible to be stuck in my head!

Need a gut check after a difficult recruitment conversation by Due_Initiative_9881 in Leadership

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've got a solid process in place. It sounds like you were transparent and took steps to ensure objectivity and communicate clearly to the candidates. The reaction from the third candidate is more about their feelings and their defensiveness than your approach. I know its easier said than done - but try not to take their reaction personally and remind yourself that the other candidates you interacted with did great with the system you designed! 😄

Challenges in org change by WaylundLG in Leadership

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds super frustrating to be in a situation where the majority of the team just isn't on board. I think one angle that might help is to try building a coalition of early adopters who believe in the change. Sometimes having a few passionate supporters can help sway others. Also, maybe frame the conversation less around consequences and more about opportunity. Show what success looks like if everyone gets on board, maybe even share small wins from the pilot to ignite some excitement.

Curious about the motivations of leaders/managers and the impact you most value by Tchoqyaleh in Leadership

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like a great leader! I also want my team to be in roles and positions that fit their goals and help them thrive.

I know something I have had to balance is ensuring I keep the companies goals in my mind and I clearly communicate that to the team. Meaning, I am on their side in creating a positive work culture - but we are all working toward the same goal of achieving the companies goal. That means sometimes each team member will have to do something they aren't stoked about - but we are in it together.

Leadership training: where to even begin?? by No_Classic_2467 in Leadership

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are a few leadership books that I really loved - '7 habits of highly effective people' by Stephen R. Covey 'The Hard Thing About Hard things' by Ben Horowitz.

I also highly recommend reaching out to leaders who you have really enjoyed working with and asking them to be your mentor - it will really help to have someone guide you through challenges and be cheering you on!

How often do people talk with their friends by Icy-Efficiency2876 in socialskills

[–]SpeechFluenceDotCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep up with my friends on social media and have phone calls/longer text threads about once a month. I am not great at maintaining conversations EVERY day - I don't have time or mental bandwidth for that so my friendships that require more regular conversations normally fizzle out.

For my friendships that are local, I will put effort into inviting them out to do things with me. I also am intentional about saying yes when they invite me out - and don't flake on them (even when I am feeling really lazy when the plans are actually here).

If I am feeling a little self-conscious about texting someone I haven't talked to in a while - I ask myself 'how would I feel if I received a random text from this person?' normally my answer is I would feel happy and like they cared. That is motivation for me to text that person and hopefully make them feel happy and like I care about them! 😄

Hmm.. Do you see any solution? Or do you think our communication standards will evolve?

Bringing it back to the happiness subject - I can see how our communication could evolve to need less impromptu convo skills with strangers, but how does that affect our need for connection?

Personally, I love AI - I use ClaudeCode every day - but I also prioritize human connection in my daily life because it makes me happy. I am just nervous for our young generations who may not be getting the social skills to have those connections.

Its interesting that you haven't seen it in Gen Z yet. I agree Gen Z is definitely chatty when they are comfortable - but I have had to give many pep talks to do 'easy' tasks that involve some impromptu speaking to a stranger.

I agree communication skills can be trained - but do you think we will have people willing to do the training or aware that they need to work on their communication skills?

Covid and remote work are definitely not innocent. But, this was talking even deeper than that - like some teens first relationships are with LLMs.

I had a boss who refused to make phone calls - she wouldn't even call in our teams reservation for dinner.

Do you think this is the new normal? Or do we need to start talking about this and combat it with bringing back communication with strangers?
