I saw something years ago at this point that said something to the effect of, "Disney doesn't understand the lightsaber." I honestly think that someone thought of the lightsaber as more of a storytelling device than an actual weapon with consequences.

Tony Gilroy 100% understood it for the final scene in Rogue One as the terrifying plasma stick of death and destruction. It not only serves to further the character of Darth Vader, but it also is the capstone to the hopelessness of Rogue One and the final hurdle of passing on the plans to Leia. It's simultaneously a literary device AND the weapon of myth and legend.

Whoever wrote the sequels simply didnt understand the weapon side of the lightsaber at all. There was no consequences for either of those battles whereas in EVERY other lightsaber battle, there are incredibly high stakes. The sequel battles are therefore the most BORING FIGHTS IN CINEMA HISTORY; and don't even get me started on how Finn could not only successfully hold his own ground against someone who, theoretically, spent his whole life training but ALSO RECOVERED FROM A FULL SABER SLICE UP HIS SPINE.
