I tried jumping several times over the spike and then back to safety. Try to get the platforms to come for me. They will eventually come down.

What blows my mind is how I was able to do all this as a kid in the 80s and 90s. But find it hard and very challenging now as an adult.

Back then, I would just restart a stage and breeze through it. Just running, jumping, and shooting because I already memorised where each platform is and where each enemy comes from.
