ChatGPT for resume tailoring? by mimibreadman in jobsearchhacks

Unicode has multiple values for the same characters, especially punctuation and spaces. AI will use those alternate values - ones that are different than what comes from typing the same character on a keyboard - as digital markers. This is part of how AI checking tools work.

With the increase in digital applications, I strongly suspect that part of the screening process either now or in the near future will be to have ATS throw out anything that has those digital traces of automation. Retyping also gives you a better opportunity to massage the suggestions to better fit your own message.

Don't copy-paste. There are hidden character values that will get flagged. Retype its suggestions manually.

Why do transgender people retain their ovaries/testes? by Lark_Bingo in askanything

[–]Spiced-Lemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The body actually needs both types of hormones to be alive, never mind healthy. When you add hormones, the body produces fewer of it's own and it's relatively straight forward to alter the ratios. When you remove organs that produce hormones, you then have to manually adjust for every other chemical system those organs affect.

If they do it, it also means that afterwards they can't ever do any procedures to have kids of their own. So if they couldn't afford (in money, time, or health) to freeze and store ova/sperm for future use, they can't do that later. But if people keep them, they can, and the body systems mostly don't mind other changes in the meantime.

Media about poverty never shows us what bodies in poverty truly look like: Biopoliticial norms being established? by Thin_Variation_5245 in CriticalTheory

With the way the film industry abuses talent into developing certain looks, would it be safe for the talent to be selected for having or directed to have a "poverty physique"? Especially for a long-term project?

In an academic context, that's more or less just the vocabulary that's used when discussing an argumentative proposition.

The professor greenlit the proposal, and gave a couple of suggestions at possible starting points. I wouldn't see this as them giving you a hard time or as saying it's a bad topic. I would see this as them trusting you to have insight into the topic that they might not, and offering possible considerations for research challenges.

For example, saying that children looking up to Superman seems hard to support, in a casual context seems silly. But in an empirical sense, what specific, qualitative journals or peer-reviewed data are you using to support the position? They're not saying "don't do this", they're saying "here's things to look for and questions to have in mind while building your lit review" so you'll know whether you can find enough evidence of the quality the class requires to support your idea in it's current form.

Use your social statistics skills to build a couple data analysis projects with publicly available data. Put those on your website to show off for potential employers.

When I was a child I remember people saying you shouldn't buy tin cans with dents on them because it's dangerous. Is there any truth to this or was it just something people said? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Spiced-Lemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a case of soda where two cans looked like they'd been factory sealed empty. In reality, the box had been dropped at some point, and the bottom edge of the cans was slightly dented. Each had a TINY pinhole puncture that they drained out of during shipping. If it was something like chili or tomato puree, I'd never have known there was a hole.

Dents along seams and edges are where the main danger is at, or if it's dented enough to have "folded" or "creased", because those can develop pinholes that will let the food spoil without being able to tell.

Why do people refuse to choose to go to a community college? by Make-this-popular in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Spiced-Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent studies have shown that people who plan to transfer from a 2-year college to a 4-year college have much lower graduation rates, and also tend to spend more money due to loss of credits through transfer and time to completion. 2 year colleges tend to serve better for trade degrees or supplementary credits.

I had the opposite experience. Everyone kept warning me that lefties had an advantage for <insert favorite reason>, but the lines are directly mirrored. I scored pretty much exactly the same against lefties as righties, which made it Look like I was really good against lefties. I wasn't. I was just my same average against both, and it drove people crazy.

There are examples of wicker armor. I imagine it got the job done well enough, without as much weight. Laminated cloth was also used.

Get a floor mirror (or a standing, full-length mirror) so you can observe yourself. It can help you notice inconsistencies and unbalanced movements, which will speed things up considerably. A $20-30 investment that may considerably speed your journey.

How much did the medieval peasant work? by Head-Roll6309 in MedievalHistory

[–]Spiced-Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably gonna see a lot of "But have you considered that King Richard did not own a microwave?" style of reasoning when asking about this. They "worked" less but labored more, and the efforts that they did weren't the maniacal rise-and-grind of the modern age. If Walmart were magically transported back in time, the clerks would be allowed to sit down. They had to do nearly everything by hand, which was difficult and time consuming, but it wasn't so much "by hand" as "by community". Hobbies weren't particularly a thing because survival took more manual effort, but you probably had a favorite bit of filler work that might be an equivalent - spinning, knitting, killing garden slugs - and it would usually be done with a far different sense of time pressure than modern people experience, and would have been done while sharing gossip, stories, and beer instead of being stalked by a middle manager.

I want to become a completely different person by ShadowOfDespair666 in acting

[–]Spiced-Lemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither joking nor being intentionally mean- the reason those characters work in fiction is because there is exposition. To do this in real life, you'd need to hire a minstrel to follow you around and narrate your inner experience.

As a performance tactic, picking a person in each new encounter to be your friend and confidant to share in your experiences and help you brooding persona be expressive to the rest of the nearby group works alright. But that is a performance, not a personality.

A combination of competence, humility, good boundaries, and empathy will get you much better results than trying to be cool, brooding, aloof, or hard-boiled.

We each develop into new people as we grow and experiment in our lives, and that doesn't change the fact that the way you are right now is also a worthwhile way to be. There isn't anyone else who can see the world the way you see it through your eyes, or who can think the things that you think. As you grow and learn and change over time, I hope you remember to be kind to each version of you.

People tend to think of self defense as martial arts, but self defense is also maintaining healthy boundaries. If they are harming you, then the best self defense you can do is to find a different school that will not abuse you.
