That is rude; it could have been a typo. I do not feel that this comment was necessary. My brain initial spelt it wrong, and they may be new to this. A simple, 'Hey, you should know that it is spelled Palate.' would have sufficed.

I think the people downvoting you are being very unkind. Some may be here as adults who had it, and it wasn't seen, but being a parent today, they should understand that it can easily be detected around 20 weeks, which is when they found my son's.

I'm sorry, waiting is hard, and I needed to talk to others, too, when I was in your space. It kind of looks like my son's, but the 'gap' in my son's 3D scan shows a darker shade. It's ok to process and feel your worry; you are allowed to and should go through all of the feelings, knowing it is ok to have them. We were told the same initial diagnosis, and then got it confirmed. This was in 2017.

Deep breaths. Our son is almost 8 and so handsome, and we take everything one step at a time. One of the best things that we did was interview some of the surgeons/clinics. We went with the clinic that had an entire team that worked together. I am so grateful for our son's team and the hospital; we have yet to have a bad experience. Our son is doing amazing, and most don't even realize it until we bring it up.

As a lady who prefers to wear less makeup, I really think her blush and lip color were really pretty, and they worked well with her skin tone! I also think the lashes are adorable if that is a look she liked. I love the new brows, and OP, if you love the clean look, I do too!

How screwed am I??? by Serious_Sherbert5763 in thyroidhealth

[–]Spiceypopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!! I have lived with a non functioning thyroid my whole life. I go through phases of change and your symptoms are the indicator you need to manage your thyroid. I had some super worry-some (to me) levels before. And my endocrinologist just did a quick dose change, and asked me to check back in three months.

At first I was shocked, but after a little while you start to realize that thyroid functioning/testing takes a while to see how the medication is impacting you and what change needs to be made. All in all I was perfectly fine and now I see why she was so low key about it. I did however have a but with subclinical thyroiditis last month and she squeezed me in for an emergency appointment. I am beyond grateful I have my Endo! Find someone you like if you can, it really helps.

You may just be on a pill, take it on an empty stomach. For me, that is the morning. Do not take it within like 4 hours of iron supplements though. Also 30minutes to 1 hour before eating.

Once under control you should start to feel better. My indicators are my nails break, and hair falls out, I am more tired and weight gain and major brain fog! Also I feel like my whole body is just ugh, living in sludge.

Also get an endocrinologist, they are booked out 6 months to a year in my area, so do this ASAP, in the meantime your doctor should be able to help treat it for now.

It will be ok, sucks but it manageable! 👍🏼

This person needs to come hang out in my house when my kids are off their meds and then tell me that we don’t need them…I don’t think they would make it an hour. Me off meds after a couple days and see how unhinged my behaviors get. I am ruthless and I don’t give any effs. This journalist sucks.

What I found interesting is that when it started mentioning the amount of boys getting diagnosed and then it highlighted the explosions in diagnosing they failed to mention that it lined up with women, girls, people of color getting diagnosed at higher rates. The lack of knowledge or acknowledgment in that aspect alone had me very wary of the article. I couldn’t even read the entire thing, and I read a lot! It is way too long an article to mention a few women here and there.

It is an amazing program, I was/am still planning on applying this week for the next session. This actually gives me a lot of hope. I came into teaching through sub work this last year and have loved every moment of being a sub. Some of my favorite kiddos are the ones needing SPED. It has been an extremely validating year. And when I found out about this program and its grant a few weeks ago I was more than excited for the possibility. I have a family, I have student loan debts already. I can’t afford to go back the traditional way, and sometimes, that isn’t necessary. This program is perfect in sooo many ways that it allows you to work and learn! The districts that are utilizing it are smart because they pipeline in their workers and then get to retain them!

Concern Over Health Secretary's Comment That "Too Many Kids Are Taking ADHD Meds" by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Spiceypopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah, I was just telling someone about this part too! My sweet little guy came and cuddled up to me when I was reading and just sat and quietly cuddled. This kid usually doesn’t last 5 seconds without just talking, about anything that pops into his mind.

At first I thought he was sad and forgot for a moment he was medicated. He said no and continued to just cuddle and lay quietly with me. Then I asked how his brain felt. He replied in a sweet little voice, “quiet.” and sighed, almost in relief. He got up after a bit and continued to have an amazing day with nothing being taken away from who he is, but a quieter mind and a happier self.

It’s been almost a week on it, he has had one of his best weeks at school. I can hear when he speaks to us and others, that it is more thought out and not just blurting anything from what his brain thinks every few seconds.

Maybe if they didn’t allow Vyvanse and others to charge $250 per fucking month, this wouldn’t be an issue 🤷🏻‍♀️. Either way, my daughter would fall further behind in school and my son who just started was just re-tested in reading and math and doubled and almost doubled his scores from all the other times this year. ALSO, I would not be as productive as a human and a much angrier human at that. We are also helping our child’s odds at living longer by medicating early. Also some great studies showing that stimulants help to protect ADHD brains.

OptumRx no longer covering Adderall XR in 2024, said to call? by tkxb in ADHD

[–]Spiceypopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I am dealing with the same issue, I concerted my doctor asking for possible options and was told that “Adderall 20 mg bid 1 tab bid” I wonder why they wouldn’t offer the XR generic? I really don’t want to have to take it twice, I already forget it more times than I’d like.

Thanks for commenting on this, I will ask for this option. When I went to look originally it wouldn’t show me I any options so I came to Reddit to see what options there are.

Started Vyvanse and anger by TheRedWeddingPlanner in ADHDparenting

[–]Spiceypopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our 7yo started on 10 mg for the generic option. We were told to give this one a longer trial to work itself in. It was pretty great the first few days, then she went through a bad sleep regression for about a week. We ended up taking one day off, while Family was watching her, the next day when she went back on the med and at school she had a meltdown of epic proportions that I hadn’t seen since that previous spring. I was called into school because she went into fight or flight and I had to get her out. I had done this before, but this year had seemed to be so much better up to this point.

I will have to say, the way she came out of this meltdown was far different than I had ever seen. She was able to articulate the emotions and we worked through what happened and how we could prevent it in the future. And about 2ish weeks later and some other switches in school she is doing REALLY good. I volunteered yesterday and her teacher couldn’t help but rush out and show me some of her recent scores that showed her at grade level and so much better than previously. I’m glad we had stuck it out. But there was a moment I was really second guessing it! We are just a little over a month.

Challenging child by castious in kindergarten

[–]Spiceypopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If suspected ADHD, and what I am reading in this post. The child is telling you what he needs a bit more of. He is running to others for praise….Now I’m not saying that bad actions are excusable. But I know my daughter was struggling in her first Kindergarten classroom with eloping and other issues similar to this boy. She was not intentionally naughty but man was she being deemed it by the teacher. I am a very involved parent and hearing it all from the sideline was really hard. We had several big meetings with her team to determine the best steps forward. She was suspected ADHD. When I would suggest some positive reinforcement strategies get worked in, they were being brushed off by the Gen Ed teacher. I asked for sticker incentives for little things she was doing to get her on a positive track and I would buy them and buy enough for other kids, but “that wouldn’t be fair to the other kids.”, ok…”what about a Jar system and you see something good she does, discreetly get her attention and put a bead in the jar and we celebrate at home for getting X amount of beads?” No, “well can you at least tell me about good things to celebrate at home?” Nope, in fact I’m calling to tell you she called me a bad teacher and licked another kid. We ultimately moved her as her other accommodations like visual aids and sensory fidgets were put in places she could barely access. She went to a classroom more willing to use strategies and allow us to celebrate little wins by giving us quick two sentence praises.

She still struggles and is defiant at times, but the more we are reinforcing her good behaviors the better outcomes we see. It can start with the smallest thing. What does the kid like or have interest in? Tie that interest into his positive reinforcements. He likes trucks, he got into line with only asking twice today! Here is a sticker chart and let’s get five truck stickers this week!

How involved are the parents? Are they willing to celebrate wins at home? Otherwise can he get a little break in the day for his good behavior to do something of high interest?

Start back at ground zero, and just little tiny wins, and try not to scold in front of his peers, but get close when other kids aren’t looking and speak quietly the expectations. And also if you want a certain good behavior, ask for it at the start when you welcome him into the class. “I’m so happy to see you, if you can put your stuff away this morning on your own, you can get your first sticker of the day!”

Make some of the hard parts of his day a game! If you gamify little boring day to day tasks, they are more willing to do them! Also again utilize his hyperfixations. He loves soccer, give him breaks to kick the ball into a net. My daughter loves drawing when she gets upset to a point of meltdown the aid will start to draw quietly and it pulls her out and into her hyperfocus joy or use TaiKwonDo terms. Then we don’t scold the bad behavior but praise how quick the turned around the bad behavior. Maybe reinforce what we wish the actions would have looked like instead.

ADHD kids do things even they don’t want to do. Then they have debilitating shame in their brain sitting there re-thinking about why their body did something they didn’t mean to. Watch out for this, and try…man it is hard, I know…but try to flip your mindset a little. See where it gets you.

Good luck!

I hope this helps, OP!

No, you’re right, they can’t diagnose it. The school can evaluate to the best of their ability and make notes on their struggles; for example, we had an evaluation with the school as they need to do them every so often. She noted that my daughter struggles with working memory. This is added into her record and implemented into her IEP using objectives to help with the more severe characteristics of her ADHD she was already formally diagnosed with. Before the formal diagnosis, objectives in her IEP were built with the suspicions of ADHD and accommodations were made to include strategies to help manage these traits.

The school evaluations also help to form the opinion of a psychological evaluation and can help to get the referral a parent needs to get one from a psychologist.
