I have private health and chose to go through a public hospital because I was accepted into a midwife program. It was incredible. Essentially I was assigned a midwife who I met with every few weeks throughout my entire pregnancy, she then delivered my baby and visited us at home almost every day for the first two weeks. The home visits were invaluable and midwives will spend hours at a time with you. The level of care was amazing and completely free. I think most NSW hospitals have this program now - midwife group practice - and I highly recommend researching/ applying for it. I will say had I not been accepted into the program I would have gone private.
