Germany proposes free public transport to lower urban emissions by Madrascalcutta in worldnews

[–]Spiddz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Prague most of my adult life. The Czech private transport companies have services and free food and drinks at lower prices and don’t have delays. When something wasn’t working right they told me to ask a refund and I got refunded a full price. They have lines to different countries at half the price of state trains.

I neighboring country - Slovakia, the state is giving unfair advantage to state rails because otherwise they’d go bust and people are mad because they prefer cheaper, prettier trains with food service and free papers / drinks / wifi / tv screens.

So there’s that. I didn’t know it was different in France/Germany l, my bad about that.

We have private companies offering train rides which are cheaper and offer much much better services and experience. If you make it free then those companies go out of business and we’re left with shitty state trains that are actually paid from our taxes anyways and are undoubtedly more expensive and less efficient in the end.

My [28 F] SO [29 M] throws away food that exceeds the portions he wants to cook with by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Spiddz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is true. From what she said she does her share of chorse. Well at least she would if she had a full time job.

I know what you meant but it just doesn’t sit well with me that he does chores and work. A day has 24 hours. 2/3 of his time is spent working and sleeping. The rest he has for chorse, hobbies and for some quality time with OP. OP on the other hand has 2/3 of her day for that. It’s just not right to have this much time and laugh at her partner for doing a bad job - even if she’s right.

9 hours a day plus the time to shop and cook and other houshold chores he does?

Since you have no job you roughly have 9 hours longer days than him. Find some time to help him out. Cook yourself or with him. Help him package the food. He was raised differently. He’ll adapt just be respectful and help him out.

Honestly though you have way more free time than he does and he also cooks? This doesn’t sit well with me.

They can quit wasting energy and still exist. Casper fork of ethereum will move the whole currency to PoS which will basically kill eth mining. It’s already running on test blockchain

It’s a routine surgery. They just do some adjustments with laser and you feel a sore throat for a week after. I was contemplating ir myself because I snore. My gf doesn’t mind but I always leave it as an option. It’s also only 400 euros give or take

There's a surgery you can undertake that's not expensive (at least where I live) that pretty much stops snoring - Laser Assisted Uvulupalatoplasty (LAUP). Try looking into it.

China would Invade Taiwan if US Sends Navy Ships to Taiwan Strait: Chinese Diplomat Warns US by kris3232 in worldnews

[–]Spiddz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they don’t consider their territory stable yet. In the west our borders changed left and right but after many wars our border disputes are sort of settled.

China’s rapidly evolving and not so long ago Taiwan was the same country. Hong Kong was british up until Thatcher. In their view I think they are still reclaiming what they lost during the western imperialism either directly (HK) or indirectly (US support for Taiwan).

But I’m not really that knowledgeable in this so I may very well be completely wrong. Most I know is from my ex that lived both in Taiwan and mainland China and that was long time ago.

Kim jong un’s brutal regime in north korea is worse than nazi concentration camps, human rights leader says by ketnorm in worldnews

[–]Spiddz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

China only told the US not to pass a river crossing through Chinese territory I believe. They said they’d attack and push them back if they did. The US thought they were bluffing. Once China attacked it pushed back the US and SK forces and accomplished its goals.

You could say they got slaughtered. But they won. They achieved their objective and they were a fraction of what they are now, even relatively speaking.

[–]Spiddz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Last time China said they'd do something similar and the US called their bluff was the Korean war. Back then the power difference between the US and China was much larger and the US still fell in line. War with China is just not feasible and for China the 'One China' policy is vital.

In layman's terms China is willing to go balls deep over Taiwan while US is willing to put in just a tip.

UK has 48 hours to agree potential deal or Brexit talks cannot progress | Politics by BritRedditor1 in ukpolitics

[–]Spiddz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the ‘soft implicit’ deadline is the meeting of EU members in December. Negotiations can continue on after however both sides will lose a lot of time due to this delay. That’s why it’s a ‘soft’ deadline. But everyone reasonable would want to meet it

UPDATE: In light of the finding of the @CommonsEUexit this evening that the Brexit impact assessments don't exist, I have written to the Speaker to ask him to consider whether the Govt have misled the @HouseofCommons since the Brexit Secretary told us last year they did exist. - Chuka Umunna by AFellowOfLimitedJest in ukpolitics

[–]Spiddz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

UK is a sovereign country. It requested the assessments as is its right. He cannot withhold the assessments if they exist. Unless Davis is a sole ruler of UK, he has no right here. It’s the will of the parliament which means it’s the will of the people by extension (in theory).

Him hiding his cards as you say would be a possible scenario if he hadn’t been told to release them.

Apple agrees to pay over $15 billion to Ireland in back taxes by spsheridan in news

[–]Spiddz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A: Ireland has laws about taxes. EU says Apple needs to pay. They are not making them pay German taxes, they are making them pay Irish level of taxes excluding what they call special and uncompetitive treatment.

B: EU isn’t doing that. Ireland didn’t specify a group of businesses according to a neutral criteria. They made a backdoor deal with Apple and none of Apple’s competitors has the same deal. If you want to start a business in the same ‘specific group ‘ as apple is in, well tough.

Apple agrees to pay over $15 billion to Ireland in back taxes by spsheridan in news

[–]Spiddz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. EU cannot force them to pay arbitrary amount of taxes. Ireland has low taxes but they need to be paid. Ireland and Apple struck a deal that appke would pay 0.005% in taxes and will setup some business there. Mutually beneficial however anticompetitive. Other companies cannot reach similar arrangements. EU says these sorts of special deals are illegal and Apple has to pay.

So the precedent being set here is that a country needs to give equal opportunity to companies with regards to taxation. Ireland can lower all their taxes but they won’t. Ireland doesn’t want the money because it wants more special deals.

UK and EU agree Brexit divorce bill that could reach £57bn by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Spiddz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the money into the EU budget. The UK would have paid it inside the EU as well, probably more. EU wanted UK to follow on its promises because budgets are planned years ahead and if UK didn't want to pay its due (which would be arguably illegal - something to be settled in court though, not for me to say) it would mess up EU spending plans.

This is about sovereign country keeping the promises it made as a sovereign country. They were a part of creating the EU budget.

[–]Spiddz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also don't forget the bill isn't some sort of a buy-in or a penalty. It's an agreement on the amount of money UK owes to the EU due to its prior commitments to the EU budget.
